Hi Renee! I’m a long time watcher first time commenter. The photos of the sailors with the costumes and mud is a line crossing ceremony on a ship. Before a sailor crosses the equator, for the first time, he or she is considered a pollywog. After crossing, the sailor is now a shellback. In the Navy they have a whole big ceremony with costumes of Poseidon and the whole nine yards. The Captain and crew all participate. The sailors receive a certificate of Neptunus Rex. My uncle was career Navy and I still have his certificate. I love the channel. I lived in Hamilton when I was a kid and still get up to Jersey to see family. I love seeing the Lambertville flea market videos. I’ve pulled a lot of cool stuff out of the Golden Nugget. I was there last about 3 years ago. I can totally relate to the Disney stuff as well. My folks moved my sister and I to Central Florida from NJ. We spent a lot of time at Disney growing up. Keep up the great work!

That's right. You become a Shellback when you cross the equator. It was a hazing Ritual that may have been toned down in this day and age,

Is Neptune, shows a line crossing ceremony, most times it is for crossing the equator but I’ve seen them for Tropic of Cancer , think they did them for Tropic of Capricorn too. Often the seaman would get a “ diploma “ showing Neptune, mermaids etc. , I see these a good bit, most sellers think they are worth more then they are These ceremonies can get pretty involved, with fancy homemade outfits including men dressed like mermaids. Seaman have been doing this since the 1600s but probably reached its peak in WWII. Could be pretty rough too, cases of seaman dying from it. I talked to an old guy that told him they tied a rope to him and tossed him off the ship and he almost drowned. He saw lots of combat during the war but he said nothing scared him as much as that did. I think the naval has toned it down drastically today.

I have my Grandfathers certificate he received when he was a sailor, very cool. According to him, he had to swim under the hull of the ship the shortest end of course but still tough to do.

We convince visitors there is a ceremony for crossing the arctic circle, too. I tried to talk my cousin in to dancing in the isle of the train, but she chose a shot of Aquivit at the hotel bar later that night instead.

The photos of the ship and men at Honolulu were all taken before Pearl Harbor was bombed in Dec of 1941. That ship and everyone on it may have been destroyed on that day, so what you have is a rare valuable resource and remembrance of the men and the ship. I'm sure there will be many who would like to see the men in the crew as they were back then. Excellent find, I can't think of a better person to "rediscover" the pictures.

Yes! The Poseidon reference in the picture is part of the ceremony for crossing the equator for the first time. A true right of passage that is cherished and respected. Comes with a certificate and lots of stories to tell forever! It’s still being done in today’s Navy.

Rene... the pictures of sailors in costumes were probably from a naval tradition when the ship goes over the equator their is a ceremony for those who have crossed over it for the first time... it is like a college pledge ceremony... once you pass all what they have prepared for you...you are a shellback...prior to that you are known as a pollywog... Everyone gets a certificate who participated..In the Navy it is a big deal as everyone does not become a shellback... for the record I am one!... their are a couple other ceremonies like this but this is the best!....Russ

I worked for a local auction house for a year to “learn” about antiques. What I learned was that so many people didn’t give a whoop about their predecessors. I am actively researching and archiving with my sister, our family history in North America (1620 in Plymouth and 1650 in Upper Canada). One or more of the grandkids will be interested so do your offspring a favour, get busy labeling old pictures!

@PaperandMoose

The majority of the albums that I buy are of unidentified people (no full name written in the album/on photos). I've purchased a few albums here and there, with the family identified, and these have come from estate sales where the family has put the item up for sale themselves. At the family run sales, often they are surprised that anyone would want to buy their old photos... many have stated that albums/photos belonged to their great so-and-so and they have no idea who any of the people are and were just going to toss them. I have reached out a few times to family whose photographs I do come across and I either do not hear back or they have no interest.
