Great video! Paper Mario TTYD is my favorite game of all time and I'm ecstatic that the remake is actually happening. I was first introduced to Paper Mario as a kid with Super Paper Mario but I actually didn't play TTYD until the pandemic. But when I finally played it, it was definitely an unforgettable and impactful experience for me. It really encapsulates everything that I love about the Mario franchise while also incorporating a lot of really unique aspects that you would never expect from a Mario game at the same time.

I still can't believe this remake is happening. TTYD was my first Mario game, RPG and non-licensed game besides Sonic. It was also the first game I played with a story and dialogue. It essentially taught me and my brother how to read. It was instrumental in making me who I am today, from my humor, to my love of writing, to my taste in art style. I hope it gets a huge resurgence in popularity with new people. I'd love it to be as impactful to people as it was to me as a 7 year old. Also, glad I'm not the only one who looked at manuals as a kid. I broke my Wii when we finally got Super and reread the manual over and over for a year until we got a new one.

Your experience with learning how to be creative from playing the game reminded me of my experience from going to see Toy Story 4 in the cinema. I was seventeen when I had seen that film and I was going through a period in my life where I was petrified of the idea of being an adult because of the general aura of the education system where children are raised their entire lives with everything provided for them and it being cut off all of a sudden at the age of eighteen with the fear of not having a roof over their heads looming over them if they don't do their jobs without asking any questions. When I was watching Toy Story 4 in the cinema, I felt really uncomfortable seeing Woody have the same internal struggles that I was having at the time play out as his case in the film's story was dealing with his fixation of being there for a child and letting it bite him on the arse mentally and my case was pushing myself to produce the best work I could for my teachers and parents just to shut them up instead of having a personal opinion on it for myself. I also felt uncomfortable seeing Buzz go through a moment where he was fighting himself about what to do because I had thought "what if that's me when I'm in university?". The ending of the film where Woody decided to do the deed with Bo Peep as Buzz encouraged him to listen to his inner voice was the moment that "changed my life" and it taught me a lesson about managing my mental health, and in the days and in the months after watching it in the cinema, it gave me some stamina to produce my own content on TikTok and on this website and to push myself outside of my comfort zone in the world of social media. Even during covid 19, it was a film that I would often watch on Disney Plus in my spare time although that stamina that I had gotten from watching it in the cinema was long gone. I think that I would classify it as the first animated film directly about someone's mental health and I would easily label it as the conclusion of the parent/child foundation of the series because of what Woody went through and what Buzz did for him at the end. I still hold it as one of the best films that I have seen in my life to this very day because of how its message had softened my experience in university and my last year of secondary school and had resulted in me pushing myself to make some stuff that I could look back on and be happy with. Toy Story 2 is still my favourite in the series because of the elevator that the toys ride on and the airport sequence, but Toy Story 4 is the only one of the series that I think had managed to push me in a direction that I don't think that I would have taken.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like Nintendo did not care about the games made by their smaller studios, even though the fans care about them passionately. They may just be videogames at the end of the day, but we form a bond with these games when we play them, we get immersed in these worlds, we share our love for the characters and stories, ...and what does Nintendo do? They'd rather reference Mario 3 again for the 9000th time. They almost act like these games were made by the competition. If they acted like this back in the day, then we wouldn't even have characters like Wario or Daisy as part of the main cast now. They would've been tossed aside because they were not from a "REAL" Mario game. Just a side series by different developers. Nintendo needs to realize that Mario's fame doesn't just come from the first party platformers alone.

TTYD is my favorite video game of all time and I have a somewhat similar experience with this game that you do. Sort of. Basically, in 2007, I was 10 and I had to undergo hemo dialysis due to having kidney failure. Let me just say, it was NOT fun. I had to go to a children's hospital an hour and a half away from my home 3 days a week for six months. But while I was there, they had a GameCube I could play during my treatments, and it was there during arguably the lowest point in my life that I discovered TTYD. I would play it every day there that I could, and eventually, I got the game for myself to play at home. And I played it NONSTOP, loving everything about it. So...yeah. TTYD helped me get through such a tough time and I treasure it greatly for that. And also because its just such a damn good game in general. The battle system, story, music, just...all of it is perfect. I actually shed some tears at the remake trailer back in September. So, yeah. That's pretty much it.

It honestly has a heart and spirit closer to the original Paper Mario, with writing as heavy and emotional as Super Paper Mario, and a battle + RPG system that uses Thousand Year Door as the basis but makes everything even better. When watching the initial reveal trailer I also held the opinion of "oh god no" as I immediately thought about the sanitization of Superstar Saga and the massive downgrade of Bowser's Inside story, plus with the Mario RPG remake being co-owned and developed by Square, I thought the amount of faithfulness present there was more of their involvement and a non-factor for this one, but by the end of the trailer I completely 180d into the "day 1 purchase" mindset it looks amazing

For years I always saw the first two Paper Mario's combat systems as "Like Mario & Luigi but not as fun", then recently I played Paper Mario 64 and I realized that... I was absolutely right, the action commands are not nearly as fun and engaging as in M&L were you make crazy moves and dodge attacks with 2 characters, but then... I played the game a bit more, and even tho the combat is not as fun, still is a really fun RPG combat but I realize that the combat is not the main appeal of Paper Mario, at least for me, is the overworld and the adventure type gameplay with amazing story and solving mysteries that is the main soul of these games, and after that I was finally able to see Paper Mario as more than "Like M&L but with less fun combat" which is the way I saw those games for years. Even if I still like M&L a lot more still, I'm happy I was finally able to appreciate the other side of the Mario RPGs, looking at these games separated from M&L that I love so much and as their own thing. Me not caring that much for the combat is probably why Super is my favorite Paper Mario so far from the ones I played (all but TTYD) but let's see if that changes soon when I play the remake

Since you brought up Pro mode... If you're ever curious of having another Paper Mario 64 experience with a little bit of spice, I would highly recommend checking out the modding community for that game. So much has happened in the Paper Mario scene since the days of Pro Mode. My personal recommendations include Dark Star or Black Pit. Master Quest is probably the hardest Paper Mario mod out there, but personally I feel Dark Star is a lot more balanced with options that make the game harder if you want, while being fairly challenging without them. Black Pit I recommend just due to how different it is, it takes the concept of the Pit of 100 Trials from TTYD and really evolves off it. It's most iconic feature is a rouge-like mode which like it sounds turns the pit into a rouge-like where you start with nothing and collect badges and partners to use along the way. Heck, if you just flat out want Paper Mario to play exactly like Thousand Year Door, you REALLY need to check out TTYD-64. It keeps basically everything from 64 while implementing all the game-play mechanics from Thousand Year Door. You wish partners took damage and could use badges? TTYD-64 added it in. You want the newer badges and items? TTYD-64 reworked most of them in. Enjoyed Stylish and Super Guards? Yep, they're in TTYD-64. I believe the only two things from Thousand Year Door that's not implemented into TTYD-64 are the stage hazards and bingo. Beyond mechanics its a pretty faithful recreation of 64, though there are a few things added like one-off rooms that let you get the new badges and shine sprites, and some extra gameplay options, like difficulty options or a randomizer. TTYD-64 alone is a very good way to revisit Paper Mario 64 if you're a big fan of the sequel's additions.

Maybe the remake will change my mind, I really hope it does, but it has a lot to live up to. The expectations set by content creators and fans are astronomically high for me, I'm expecting the best Mario RPG experience period. There were also some story sections that I felt needed to be handled better in some way. (SPOILERS DOWN BELOW) Now, I know this game was intended for children, but let's be honest; Grodus should've died. It kind of takes away from the whole final battle, in my opinion. It would've been a stronger scene showing that the game's main villain was wiped from existence in a split second by the Shadow Queen, who is clearly much stronger than him. That right there would set Shadow Queen up just a little bit better (even though she was kinda one-dimensional as a villain). Like, Hooktail and Gloomtail were killed off for real, and it seemed likely that Grubba was too, so why was Grodus getting the axe too dark to make the cut? Along with the ridiculous reveal, what also didn't sit right with me about the epilogue was Beldam suddenly becoming a good person just because the Shadow Queen was destroyed when resurrecting the Shadow Queen was Beldam's master plan from the very beginning. Unless they were implying that she was being influenced or mind-controlled in some fashion, they should've done a better job at explaining it. Otherwise, it just comes across as bizarre at best and mind-fumblingly dumb at worst because you have to remember that Beldam had still verbally abused and tormented Vivian, that you seriously trust she'll never do anything to Vivian again? If you ask me, having a family abuse victim join back with their abusers... doesn't feel like a good lesson to teach to children, especially children who are victims of abuse (maybe even by their own family members) like Vivian. Like, Beldam, Marilyn, and Doopliss, pretty much get away with no consequences for their actions. So, instead, what I would like to do is have Goombella tell Mario that Vivian has been trying to socialize with more people now (her being a transgender female could also work well, too) and also have Vivian helping out others who feel like they're unwanted. As for Beldam and Marilyn, why not have a post-game side quest where you choose to help them seek redemption when they (mostly Beldam) feel like there's nothing left for them in the world now that they're plan has failed? Maybe it could even involve the Palace of Shadow again where they even talk about their own lives as well and you could help them see that there's more to a world than just following orders and/or taking it over. Actually, they should be punished for their crimes somehow. I know they probably don't deserve to be redeemed, and it's pretty cheesy, too, but, honestly, anything could've worked better than that part of the epilogue we got in the base game.
@graveyardsmash27117 ай бұрын
@@Loner098 … except Doopliss and Marilyn didn't do anything except what they were told, and Sir Grodus was a victim of being gaslit/manipulation. Killing him off and letting Beldam live would be objectively WORSE.
@Loner0987 ай бұрын
@graveyardsmash2711 Now that I think about it, I wouldn't let any of those three live, considering they had effectively attempted world domination, which can be a serious crime that is punishable by execution, the fact that both Marilyn and Doopliss still bothered to participate in Beldam's plan, knowing very well of what they were doing, AND how both Beldam and Marilyn can seemingly teleport anywhere. Grodus may have also been tricked by Beldam, too, but that does NOT excuse his corrupt desire for world domination either. It also doesn't help how one-dimensional the main villains in TTYD were.
@graveyardsmash27117 ай бұрын
@@Loner098 We don't get the full context for what his world domination consisted of other than building it in his image. This is also… Paper Mario you're talking about. Super Paper Mario had villains that did way worse than them (sans Beldam) and were all forgiven in the end, except for Dimentio.
