The fact that Yandev messaged multiple game creators of (sometimes not even spite based) fangames expecting them to take their original work down because it “threatened his income” (made on patreon for a game he won’t ever finish) or JUST because it affected his popularity and threatened to take the spotlight off him for one single second, even using threats of suicide and financial ruin, makes me think mayyyybe his game never being finished isn’t totally other people’s fault
@mianaru45402 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you researched a bit further you would come to realize that Dev didn't message those developers for making a fan game/mod. He only personally dm'ed a selected few to confront them for stealing Yansim's private volunteer assets (and no I'm not talking about the Aoi model that is going to be replaced soon). The bits about financial ruin and suicide? (never saw that one before) are all heated and toxic arguments when the fan game devs refused and out of spite, take Dev's single sentence out of context. Also, I'd recommend trying out 1980s mode if you want to get a feeling of a finished Yansim game, I think Dev did a decent job with already made assets and voicelines.

@@mianaru4540 Yeah, YanDev got into with the developer of Watashi no Mono even though the Dev was actuay a fan of YanSim, never stole any assets, and generally was actually upset that people warped his game into a COMPETITOR of YanSim when he was actually a fan. Supposedly, there were suicide threats similar to Love Letter, but I can't fimd whether that part was true or false. So basically, try to avoid drama, don't compare your game with Yandere Simulator, do not release your game half finished and expect it to be popular, do not make drama videos on your channel when developing, be ready for lots of obstacles while developing, expect developing a game to be very hard, actually finish your game, try your hardest to get actual volunteers who don't ruin the whole thing or start drama, focus on positivity instead of attacking people, and your Yandere Simulator fangame is good to go! Edit: And do NOT make your project out of spite. Edit: I never said that everything made out of spite can't be a success, I meant that making your project out of spite, is too unnecessary. Not only that, but it will just bring more drama into your project.

Basically what I'm hearing is that young, naive developers wanted to finish Yansim or prove themselves and weren't ready for the workload of making an actually competent game and all the challenges that came with that. they were trying to cash in or make a name for themselves not realizing how hard it is to make a game in the first place. Then of course the toxicity, but otherwise the main issue is getting dedicated developers and volunteers who actually care about doing long term projects.
@nicestpancake3 жыл бұрын
I feel like the toxicity aspect largely comes from the fact that it's a bunch of teens(/VERY young adults) trying to be better than everyone else and not taking their time. "Basically what I'm hearing is that young, naive developers wanted to finish Yansim or prove themselves and weren't ready for the workload of making an actually competent game and all the challenges that came with that." This actually kinda applies to YandereDev himself too (he's repeatedly stated the game development was never supposed to go for this long nor the scope get this big). The major difference being that he kept going anyways and is still going to this day (although he's clearly had a few emotional breakdowns along the way, several of which were documented in this video!). Considering that he's managed to get a proof of concept build out (the 80's mode, which is technically a full game and not in that "obviously an alpha pretending to be a fully game" that some other games in this vid got), I guess it goes to show that enough perseverence (...and time. Lots of time) can get the job done eventually.

It's simple, really. The very concept of YS, at its core, is way more ambitious than an indie developer can handle. Sadly, we no longer live in the era of flash games where a single random dude can pump out 50 Mario/Final Fantasy clones per year. Indie game development in general is much more difficult to get into these days, and YS is *incredibly* ambitious. It's essentially trying to be Hitman and Persona in one game. Even a AAA studio might struggle with a game like this, let alone random people on the internet.

I'm glad to see someone who understands what game scale is, I've seen a lot of people criticizing a game's development time in relation to games with much smaller scales (Such as BATDR vs. FNAF), even without all the drama, Yan Sim was going to take a long time to make regardless :)

Gameplay would be pretty much similar. The main difference would be a more present story and a different setting, neither of which I developed further than initial thought. I now feel that the setting is essential to the concept so I wouldn't change that.

Hello, Starbit Light there, the team behind Suicide For Him! Unfortunately, people has been misunderstanding SFH as a fan game, however we didn't got inspired by Yandere Simulator at all. In fact, the game has even been released in Early Access on Steam, and players were very surprised and amazed by how the game turned out! We believe that the only thing that made people misleading SFH as a fan game was the very similar artstyle at some point, but we are making our best to separate our game from any other game and stand out as its own original franchise. Beside that little confusion, that was a nice video! Keep it up!
@PaperWill3 жыл бұрын
Hi Starbit! First, I hope the game is a huge success in early access! Second, I’m going to be honest with you: it’s very difficult to believe this game wasn’t even *a little* bit inspired by Yandere Sim. NexTone, the project creator, has made content for other YanSim games, of only 10 or so accounts the SFH Twitter has followed, the first two were BijuuMike and GamingFelix, who are famous Yandere Sim Let’s Players, several other members of the SFH team seem connected to the YanSim community, both have very similar headmaster NPCs, and both have the exact same daily walking-to-school set piece. But there’s nothing wrong with having influences and inspirations!. My channel was HEAVILY inspired by PhilosophyTube, Defunctland, Illuminaughti, and Dan Carlin’s podcast series on peculiar history. (Edit: Had to confirm something about the Twitter accounts.)

Coming back to this video, I can't help thinking how much better YanSim would be as a visual novel. Like, time mechanics, so every action you do skips forward a certain amount of time in the day, you could play around with screen effects if you go particular places and happen across your Senpai, every place could quickly describe what's going on and you choose which situations to approach - the code would be fairly complex for a visual novel and include a lot of variables and counting up points but as someone who codes in Renpy it would totally be possible to even keep all the gameplay aspects like gossiping, befriending the unimportant students, joining clubs, hell even Info-chan. hell you could even keep having minigames for things like the maid cafe job or the clubs! And if you were coding in Renpy you wouldn't even need to use much actual Python since a lot of these mechanics could be coded just in Renpy without using init blocks, plus it's an easier coding language. Like?? Man.

ex-dev of Limerence here (as you can tell from the profile picture lol). Just wanted to say that Limerence itself was a mess. Originally started in a discord server as a fangame being made in revenge against YanDev. I remember the YanSim rivals got leaked in this chat by one of the volunteers and it wasn’t a great start to development… there was also a lot of in-house bullying which was separate from the drama with Love Me. I was the 2D pixel artist for the game and also one of the writers. One of the devs in particular (Ophelia) was a big cause of the downfall of the game, they were pretty controlling, started a lot of drama and the reason I left the team back in 2017 due to some questioning views on transgender women which was akin to the same sort of views that TERFs hold. Sort of checks out since one of the rivals was a transgender woman and her elimination method was pretty… brutal. The point about the game being a bullying simulator against people from different minorities is a very good point and I felt that when I was working on the game. In all honesty, I wanted the game to be more focused on the murder mystery rather than the social sabotage aspect but then I guess it wouldn’t have been a YanSim fangame, it would have been an entirely different genre. Was not surprised in the slightest when it flopped over a year after I left the team.

This 'curse' is just what happens to most games, by devs that don't have experience in releasing games: - They rely on volunteers because they don't know how to finish it on their own, become overly dependent on them and public relations, making the project jeopardized if just one volunteer stops working. This also creates a tension that fuels drama. - They take help from just about anyone in order to finish their game, thinking that more hands are better. While it just creates more dependency, more need for management and more opportunity for drama. - They underestimate the scope of the project, get swept up by their vision and are unwilling to compromise at things that deter from it.

And that is compounded by the low-hanging fruit of "at least my game is better than the half-finished, unoptimized mess that is the actual Yansim" as if that discounts them from putting in any effort at all.

Not to mention that the Yansim audience is full of kids, the people who want to build these games are inexperienced and usually kids, and the type of people who enjoy these games tend to be very passionate, volatile, and not very agreeable (note the drama). Take a kid from high school to college that enjoys violent and dramatic content, give them a very ambitious and energetic personality, and give them an inflated ego due to their noticeably high skill level in coding for their age. They have the ambition to start but not the desire to put in the work, and their people skills are immature or perhaps just incompatible with the personalities of the people who have the skillsets they need to progress in the project. They aren't the best team builders, and already have too much in their life at their age to dedicate themself to a project of their desired scope.

@@ZorotheGallade Yep especially at the scope. Developing games is hard enough, but few people realize just how much work an open world is. And then how complicated a game is where so many interactions can happen, interactions with objects, objects with each other, AND at least somewhat believable character interactions based on what happened before. Even the Hitman games, which are produced by a high end studio, have their missions mostly in self contained areas, which keeps "action -> consequence" simpler. In a situation like this, the devs have to be at the drawing board and come up with a robust system for these problems. And I doubt too many had done that.

@@ShionKenobi honestly i think a yandere sim game could work, but they REALLY need to limit the scope of what content they want. i feel like thats partially why the actual yansim feels so disappointing. because alex promised so much so early on and constantly insisted of time frames that he couldnt reach, people naturally felt antsy or that no work was being done. i really liked the game as an edgy 11-13 year old (kids really do love some edge) and i just dropped off because the game just felt like a standstill, with all content added feeling like it was useless or there to stall people
@gregjayonnaise83142 жыл бұрын
I feel like this concept could theoretically work, but it would take a writer and programmer who is very self aware and doesn’t take things too seriously. As a matter of fact, when I heard about YanSim, I thought the idea was supposed to be a parody of those edgy horror anime with crazy girls. The problem is that YanSim has a story that is unironically just as cliche and boring as those edgy anime and genuinely thinks it’s a cohesive original story. I think the problem arises when the kids who make this game take everything at face value and take the concept so seriously. The Yandere trope is kind of falling out of favor as of late in modern anime; Yanderes just aren’t around as often, and anime girls that are unhinged on some level tend to have other traits that prevent them from being defined as Yanderes anyway. The only way I could see YanSim working is as a parody, or with some type of twist.

Great video! I'm pretty deep into the Yandere Simulator community, so seeing some games even I was unaware of was a pleasant surprise. I agree that there does seem to be a "curse", but it's largely because most of these projects follow this formula: -The devs are too young, immature, and inexperienced -The game is made public basically as soon as the devs are able to import the Aoi model pack into the project -The game yoinks the already broken Yandere Simulator formula and doesn't know where to go once they've caught up to the original game -The devs underestimate how much work goes into the project -The devs have public fights/petty drama (like you said). Bonus in that since the community is such a small pool of people, this is almost inevitable for the majority of these games since you can't quite get away from the people you have beef with -The "team" is very small and fickle -The dev themselves have almost no skills to contribute to the project OR are artists first, programmers second, developers third. Wants to improve on Yandere Simulator because they see its flaws but don't actually know what to add or how that's an actual improvement. I've lurked in and participated in many Discord servers dedicated to many of these projects, so I've been able to see them crash and burn in real time, complete with petty fights and immaturity from everyone. Here are some small details/fun facts you may have been unaware of since you didn't mention them in the video: -Project RY was born after the development team of NYS (Not Yandere Simulator) fell apart. There's almost no evidence of them existing after they deleted their Discord server around 2018 (was there for that. It was magical), so I don't blame you for missing them. -The KZbin channel of Sara's School Life's actually made one of the (many) mistakes that Yanderedev made which was to lash out in frustration because of repetitive of comments and questions (in this case it was "is this coming to Android?"). They uploaded a very short video that was very similar to Yanderedev's "Stop Sending Me Emails" video. -The '"toxicity" in question on the Discord server was mostly people asking for updates/criticizing the lack of progress (admittedly in a not so civil manner) since the team had largely been silent for a while. The only person who consistently seemed to be working on the project was one of the head writers. -There's currently a(nother) Watashi no Mono Revival project that was semi-active on Discord earlier this year. As of about a month ago (I think), they locked the server, allegedly due to a very angry someone harassing someone else, at some point. There have been no official updates, development or otherwise, since August. The Discord server invites are restricted, so I can't send a link, unfortunately. -There's yet another game called SkyJane which was announced somewhat recently on r/Osana that seems to be a mashup of Harry Potter and My Hero Academia. It seems to be rather large in scope, but is currently active here: kzbin.info/door/apJr9eIEszxTsl6bEpqCfg -Suicide for Him isn't on hiatus. Like you said, the Discord server is active, and it actually seems that things might be going semi-smoothly? As of today, Steam is reviewing their game and they're looking to upload it as Early Access soon. Related to this, I pointed out a while ago that the name "Suicide for Him" might not be great for optics, so an unofficial alternative name is Sudoku for Him. As for the video itself, I'll say this: I like that you reached out to everyone involved, but was disappointed by your lack of elaboration on those discussions. It might take up more time, but I would prefer you just give a more detailed recap of those conversations instead of "I talked to X and Y about this (people who definitely had very different perspectives), and both had lots to say, but in the end they both agreed that Z." I honestly don't know how you dug up so much information about even the very, *very* shortlived games, so kudos for that too.

I’d have to check, but I think I was pretty careful not to say it was YandereDev’s original asset, only that lots of YanSim games use the same model as the main character from YanSim. And I think it’s fair to describe that as copying. If you’re making a Yandere Sim-inspired game, there are thousands and thousands of Unity Store character models. It’s not a coincidence that almost everyone uses the one YanSim uses: they’re going for familiarity.

After a few months of debating this, I think i've finally figured this curse out. Yandere simulator has an amazing concept, if thought about! A young girl lives almost her entire life getting bullied by her classmates, alongside frequent doctors visits for her extreme lack of emotion, meets a boy on her first day of school and instantly falls into an obsession. She obsesses over him to no end and brutally kills anyone she deems a threat to him and her over the course of 10 weeks, even fighting off some of the most prestigious people in Japan. It's basic, but not boring basic! It's the right amount of complexity & simplicity. Now, yandere dev knows his games 'yandere' concept is good. Although, the game itself is horrible.. absolutely terrible. It runs awfully, is boring and feels like a chore, suffers from same face syndrome, is repetitive and overall buggy. Thus, when he hears another yandere game being developed, he sprints to shut it down because he knows that the yandere concept is the only thing keeping people playing his game. If his players see basically the same game just with 10x better gameplay he knows they'd drop yandere simulator immediately for that game and only occasionally return purely for nostalgia. Basically, he clings onto the yandere game aspect as it's the only thing keeping people from ditching yandere simulator. Thank you for reading this, I appreciate this a lot! Have a good day/night and don't forget to take care of yourself! 💗

i'm back from 2 years later, yandere simulator is CANCELLED due to yandere-dev being the disgusting person he is and gr00m1n9 a 16 year old (ayano's voice actor) which led to all the other voice actors also leaving and with that, yandere simulator getting officially cancelled. almost all of the people in the yan-sim community have also left the community for the actions of yandere-dev and almost everyone in the fandom/community has left. however, i feel like one of the reasons why most of the yan-sim fandom leaving isn't due to yandere-devs actions but for the game being cancelled. that is because yandere-dev wasn't such a saint before either, he had done MULTIPLE bad things and only a small range had left the fandom. we never got to see the game getting complete and getting all 12 rivals on the spot. although it has been a fun ride, the only one we can blame at the moment is yandere-dev for taking the main part in his actions, so, with that said, goodbye yan-sim. goodbye forever.

The curse is that this concept will never ever ever work if it’s primarily developed by a non-Japanese team. You can attempt to parody anime and manga tropes all you want, but it’s a lot harder to parody something when you don’t have the cultural background to do so. It just opens the doors for a lot of volunteers approaching the game with absolute sincerity. And when your game largely revolves around obsession, mental illness, suicide, murder, sexual assault, and high school teenagers, you’re just setting yourself up for drama and weirdos. The entire yandere trope is already rife with problems. I don’t think people realize how delicate and precise they’d have to be in order to pull off a game like this and avoid controversy without sacrificing fun.
@RockBand9713 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's the delicate subject that make these projects fail. To an extent, you could argue that other indie games touch the same subjects but remain royal to it. The problem lies in the idea being too wide. A game where you can kill rivals in a school without getting caught in multiple ways is already a very tall order. Add that they want to do it in 3D and have a story with voice acting, and it becomes impossible.

Woah, sexual assault? Suicide? Are Yandere games usually containing these things? That's fucked up. I can def see where all those things (especially including high school teenagers) would draw in the creeps and weirdos.

This is my take as well. The yandere trope is inheritantly problematic. A game about a highschool age girl murdering her romantic rivals with included panty shots in the original is bound to attract a certain crowd and to pretend otherwise is pretty naive. I mean look at the gross fetishization of irl child murderer Nevada tan. Or the creepy celebrity status of irl 'yandere' murderers. A Japanese team would definitely be better at navigating the pitfalls of a trope they created. Add to it the reputation for low effort ' insert animal or interest simulator' games and it's a recipe for disaster.

To add onto that, many view the yandere trope as a harmful stereotype of people with borderline personality disorder and therefore heavily dislike the trope

hi! i've been a very active part of the community for quite a long while, especially having an interest in the clone/fangame side as i am a game developer and... well, i think you can imagine how weird things can get hearing things like the claims of making a fully fledged yansim game in 2 weeks. before getting into things, nice work with the video! it goes over a lot of information, this and potatobrick's video on yansim fangames are the only two videos i'd recommend for people out of the loop with yansim clones who want information. it's quite detailed and you did a great job! a bit of notes: - there was another yansim game apeis tried to make, back in the magimoon era, being "osana simulator" but it never was finished or even that large in how much work it had done. there was a premise of a... very distasteful plot twist where it's just "ayano is trans." very little was known about it, but there was quite a bit there which was not great - heartbreak collapsed cuz apeis didn't just fail to manage the team, but also ditched the project without telling anybody. it was weird, people were basically left in the dark one day before some were able to get info out of apeis about what was going on - apeis ironically suicide baited some others during love letter's development, even after yanderedev's message to them - this is the thing i think most people do not realize. love letter is not actually a fangame, despite its claims, which is why it never had even the source code released. it is, at its heart, a heavily modded version of yandere simulator. only one person has ever leaked any footage of the actual gameplay who was a playtester, and they never leaked the build, but it did give a look at the game and... surprise surprise, after one scene happened that faded out, it faded back into ayano's room with yansim ui despite still being love letter. personal opinion here, i firmly believe that even if there were no drama or disgusting awful actions that apeis did with the magimoon stuff, the game would still fail due to fundamentally being just reskinned yansim. not a fangame, not a clone, but just yansim passed off as original. you can see it around 1:30 into this video cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/735814658597978122/763475619777478666/Untitled7.mp4 - we do know why emd helped apeis on love letter, the reason is just that they were (at the time) friends - yanderedev asking emd to come clean that the game is somewhat fabricated was actually fairly accurate in what wnm is. wnm went open source with cancellation and it is incredibly shallow and flawed as an actual game, and emd admitted that some things were made specifically so it can look good with a video, hence the "show the game is fake" - not a correction or anything but red's project ry is now a bit more distanced from yansim (although the name stems from "red's yandere" for the ry part) with also now being focused mainly on social aspects. just an interesting note! - saiko is indeed unrelated. the only actual link is that one of yanderedev's volunteers in 2020 made to celebrate halloween a parody of it using yansim chars instead for it - saradev closed the game down because of a lot of toxic fans. to go into more details, the game had tons of people trying to play it as a replacement to yansim and calling it better and comparing them as the yansim killer when saradev has explicitly stated multiple times not to do so as saradev did this as a fun fangame and not a competitor. it was a mess, saradev could not handle the toxicity with the community and repeated questions and other issues and eventually shut it down as a result. - the one for me iirc had no person who was working on love letter, but instead being made to try and take the fame and stage after immediately love letter was cancelled. the developer behind that has moved onto other things since then. - dr. wolfies is a weird thing, and honestly surprised you caught that name! that was an odd case but yeah. chances are, wolfies was one of the developers and and this was a way to advertise a fangame without breaking r/osana's self advertisement rule. the developers of that game went to the osana discord server as well around the same time and had other self promotion that violated rules, it was a weird mess. somebody claiming to be dr. wolfies made a new account... unfortunately, only a little over a week ago, as u/DctrWolfies. that's as far as it ended. - must disagree about the point that most games collapse due to drama. some of the big ones had major holes as a result of it, especially love letter, but the majority are all from a lack of any of the skills needed to make a game. you mentioned some, but to reiterate, that lack of programming knowledge, absurdly high scope, making it out of spite, lack of team management, and just being "idea people" rather than devs is much larger in impact. you would be surprised by the sheer amount of people who go to places like r/osana to say "i am going to make a yansim game" and then when asked, have no experience with programming or anything even close to game development. there's way more game than the ones mentioned in this video (this did cover a lot of the main ones, though!) but those begin and end with much less popularity and before any drama can possibly emerge. - other than that, nice video! it's got clearly a lot of effort and work put into it and i like that you reached out to a decent chunk of people who worked on the projects that got cancelled. regardless, take care!

Hi M, thanks for this comment. Let me go through some of these points 1. I had no idea Osana Simulator was an Apeis game. I actually thought it was a mod, so I dropped it. Oops. 2. I got a lot of conflicting info about Heartbreak's breakup from team members, which made it a bit tricky to dive into. All I know for sure is that things didn't go great. 3. I totally missed that post by EMD about joining because he and Apeis were friends. Oops #2. 4. Definitely possible about the Dr. Wolfies thing. We'll probably never know for sure. 5. You're 100% right that scope and lack of experience are huge factors in these games dying, but I think drama still tops the list when it comes to games that get past the 1 month mark. (Just my opinion though.) It's something to do with...atmosphere. The drama gives the game a bad image, the bad image makes people be overly critical of things that would otherwise have been forgiven, and it snowballs. However I do see your point on "Idea People" I appreciate your breakdown on this info, I knew I'd get a few things wrong haha.

The reason why all these projects are "cursed" is obvious: Young, sometimes teenaged volunteers. Since they aren't getting paid, there's no incentive to act professional, and we all know teenagers are just toddlers with almost full grown bodies. The hormonal cocktail their brains are swirling in makes them sort of insane, and who could blame them?

seeing limerence mentioned made my stomach drop to be honest! i was in the dev discord for it when i was a teenager, didn’t really do anything though. i wound up being excommunicated/trash talked after venting to someone i thought was a friend about how harsh the environment was. watching people, especially people i considered friends, get kicked and then viciously shit talked was awful. it’s not surprising to hear the team ate itself alive.

As someone who was somewhat involved in the Love Letter discord server (I drew some emotes and was an active member but nothing beyond that) it can't be understated how much it exploded in popularity and how deeply it was rife with drama. Everything from the development team to the server moderators to even fan artists were not safe from being affected by drama. It's clear in hindsight that it was never going to work out but everyone was too blinded by trying to stick it to Yandev that the problems went ignored until the very end when it all imploded. In the end the community ended up no better then the people who we'd pointed at and mocked for trying to defend Yandev. People wanted a good game out of Apeis and were willing to ignore the clear signs it wasn't going to work out in favour of the hope they would get it. I could keep rambling on but I've long since moved past it all, felt like giving my two cents as someone who personally watched it all go down and got swept up in it. To anyone who's reading this I hope you have a good day!
