One of the most colorful and exciting days of the year in the Netherlands is Prince’s Day (Prinsjesdag) which happens in the Hague when the king rides in his golden coach in a major parade through town with lots of marching bands and soldiers on horseback, with traditional colorful outfits and thousands of people cheering as the parade goes by.
It's a big outdoor party for people of all ages and kids are especially happy because they get the day off from school.
You might be surprised to think that a political speech that's all about the budget for the year would turn out such an enthusiastic crowd, but it's really all about the king and the people's long-standing love and appreciation for the monarchy and they like the razzle-dazzle of the fancy parade.
This special day happens just once a year on the third Tuesday in September and begins at the stroke of one when the king, accompanied by other members of the royal household, leaves the palace in his golden carriage, which is only seen publicly on this one day of the year. Heading to parliament to give a speech, accompanied by court dignitaries and a military escort of honor, along with various marching bands and many soldiers marching by in colorful outfits.

The carriage carrying the king and queen of the netherlands in this video is the so called "Glass Carriage" as the Golden Carriage is in major maintainance.

i just want to add something, at the beginning of this clip you mention that that kids get a half day of from school. besides the fact that this is indeed true. it is only if your going to school in the Hague. if my memory serves me right.

Yes that's true, school holiday only in the Hague region, so I didn't say the entire country. I said "kids are especially happy because they get the day off from school." and "It's a school holiday for the kids, and many of them are brought in from nearby rural towns, smaller towns outside of the Hague, for the special event." My preliminary notes while researching included the whole country but then I did my research as usual before narrating and found it not listed as a national holiday.

9.20 Not really wrong and your video is very thorough anyway, but one the interesting things about the 1581 Act of Abjuration from a legal/constitutional perspective is that it didn't claim that the Netherlands threw off the allegiance to the Spanish crown, but that the King of Spain had left the throne of the Netherlands through his actions and refusal to protect and serve the people, by beeing a tyrant instead of a proper monarch, a master to slaves rather than a shepard to his sheep. In the Plakkaat van Verlatinghe, in which 'verlatinghe' translates more directly to 'leaving' than to 'abjuration', it's not the Netherlands which left the kingdom but the king who left the throne of the Netherlands. So as a legal document it wasn't constituting anything, but declaring the legal situation as observed in the sense that the king was no longer king because he didn't act like a king. That of course implies that a king's authority doesn't come from god but from the people and has to behave accordingly, to be judged by the people. It's probably no coincidence the Dutch came up with this idea instead of the feudal idea that people got their life, land and monarch as a package deal from god, because the Dutch made a lot of their land out of the sea themselves, 'If you make it dry you own it'. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2SYi4qtgtqkeNU

Some corrections: this is not the golden coach, it us the glass coach the golden is under restauration since I believe 2018 and probably never ne used. Also because of some paintings on it depicturing the colonial past of the Netherlands, which are considered to be rascist nowadays to some people. The other thing is: chikdren don't get a day off at prinsjesdag. It is just a schoolday.

Why do they salute the bands during a parade?

This are all military bands representing the various parts of the army in ceremonial dress , from various regiments to military police; from airforce tot navy. As it is an official royal event, these bands are carrying their regimental banners with them. And military protocol requires all military personell to salute these banners while passing by , as can be seen. Even the king and queen bow towards the banner of the regiment garding the entrance of the Ridderzaal ( knights Hall) after getting out of the Gouden Koets ( golden coach )

Well , Staphorst is pretty far away, 170 Kilometers actually. Also being from the Hague and having since moved to Delft I was always under the impression that it was pretty much just us Hagenezen and Hagenaars that got off all the other kids were on school excursions
