Traveling to Spain Post-Brexit: Visa and Entry Requirements
Short Stays:
British citizens can travel to Spain for short stays without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, family visits, or short-term studies.
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area and must have been issued within the last 10 years.
ETIAS Requirement:
Starting in 2024, UK travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) visa waiver before entering Spain and other Schengen countries. The ETIAS is not a visa, but an entry requirement similar to the ESTA for the USA. It is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.
Longer Stays and Residency:
If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a long-stay visa. This includes visas for work, study, or family reunification. Each type of visa has specific requirements and application procedures.
UK citizens residing in Spain before January 1, 2021, should have registered for residency under the Withdrawal Agreement and possess either a green residency certificate or a new TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero).
Work and Study:
To work or study in Spain, you will need the appropriate visa. Employers or educational institutions can provide guidance on the specific visa type you need and the application process.
Healthcare:
Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers healthcare. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) remains valid for UK travelers until its expiry date, but new applications will be for the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).
Driving in Spain:
UK driving licenses are valid in Spain for short-term visits. For long-term residents, exchanging your UK license for a Spanish one is advisable.
Customs Regulations:
Be aware of customs regulations when traveling from the UK to Spain. Limits apply to the amount of goods you can bring without paying duties, including alcohol, tobacco, and cash.
Preparing for Your Trip:
Check your passport's validity.
Apply for ETIAS (when it becomes mandatory).
Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance.
Familiarize yourself with Spanish customs regulations.
If planning a longer stay, begin the visa application process well in advance

They are not new rules. They are the rules applying to non-EU citizens. Of course, many British people believed there would be no change, as they were special. They were wrong. Also, the UK is treated as a third country, not a 3rd world country. That would be absurd.

I watched a programme on Channel 4 I think it was before the referendum from Spain and they were asking Brits what way they were going to vote most were in favour of Brexit and they living in Spain why are you voting to leave the EU to many non British living in Britain and not learning English what about you have you learned Spanish No shure all the Spanish speak English with that attitude are you surprised that the Spanish are turning against the Brits.

Ex Pats living in Spain heading back to the UK to vote leave……couldn’t make it up! A lot never paid into the system, traveling back for medical care and then told to leave and then complaining about it! I’ve lived in France since 2011, learned the language, found work and pay into the system, got my residence permit and the medical system is pretty good!

What a complete load of shit. Britains aren’t 3rd world citizens, they’re from a 3rd country. You didn’t have to leave Spain if you had a TIE card and were resident. The Spanish didn’t march all us Brits to the airport and deport us. Also, healthcare isn’t free. I pay taxes€320 per month autonomo towards my pension and healthcare. Brexit hasn’t effected me at all as Spain is my home

Totally agree, what got me was that nobody actually knew what we were voting for apart from sovereignty ( which we had't actually lost) all the other promises like illegal immigration figures have gone through the roof since we left. It took the Tories a further 5 years of negotiations to finally agree terms, which have since done our economy no good at all. I often ask people to list the gains but rarely get a coherent answer but I can make a pretty long list of what we have lost - but it is what it is and although Starmer is going to try and improve trading, I can't see us being allowed back in, as we were a total pain, especially after Thatcher got us preferential treatment 40 odd years ago. I always thought that Ted Heath taking us in to the European economic community back in the 70's, was the smartest single thing the Conservative party ever did for Britain, as our economy was in serious decline then.

not a '3rd world country,' a 3rd country!! In Ireland, our neighbours, originally from south of England, ( lived here for years) were pleading with their UK based friends NOT to vote Leave...because living in Ireland they began to understand the EU far better unlike their friends in UK . Sadly, they told us all...ALL... their friends voted leave. Stupidity of the highest order. We swapped our UK driving licence for a Spanish one before Brexit was even thought about. No driving test needed. In fact up until recently if you were a resident in Spain and had a full UK driving licence, you just applied for a Spanish one, filled in the forms, had a medical, paid the fee and hay presto your licence arrived about 2 months later. No driving test involved. The Spanish government even kept extending the deadline for those that kept putting it off.

You complain about being treated as a 3rd world country, you got it wrong the UK is been treated as a 3rd country. A lot of those in the UK who voted for Brexit were voting against migration so it's kind of karma that it's biting UK migrants in Spain

The British thought they could leave the EU while still enjoying the benefits of that. Its a bit like cancelling your golf club membership then expecting to still be able to use the clubs facilities. The number of expats who said "they need us more than we need them" and voted against their own interests was ridiculous. They are not new rules, they are the already existing rules for third countries, i.e. countries not members of the EU, not third 'world' countries as you stated. Our economy is going to be 15% lower for years due to Brexit.

I am Spanish and I have read your comment, and yes, it is a shame what has happened, but I inform you that the big BREXIT liar, Boris Johnson, yes, the same one who spit shit against the EU, has for a long time had a large mansion in Spain, a place where he usually resides even when he was Prime Minister, he had his family in Spain and he traveled by plane, and when the Spanish press asked him, he seems to live in Spain with all rights, do you know what I answer??? I have a German passport because of a grandfather, I tell you this because the great defender of Brexit caused a great earthquake here, he does not live in the United Kingdom and comment on how far a liar is capable of going, and collecting a large amount of money in a golden retirement that you, the long-suffering British citizens, pay him, you can see the mansion on the internet,

Its this.. it was rules even when UK was part of EU.. the 90 day rule for visiting/tourists! After 90 days one still need to register at that country, as living there! The good/bad thing.. is if one is a EU/Shengen citicen.. nobody know when you enter, soo one can fly under the radar and never register as living in another country! In anyway.. if one have all ones income and money in UK after Brexit.. its still no problem.. its more about bureaucracy, that britts not used to.. living in there home country! Its the same all over the world, national bureucracy.. and even in UK if one tryes to settle in UK! Every country tryes to keep a record of who lives inside there borders.. and who is entiteld to be treated the same way as there own citicens!

I spoke to a brexit voter last year who said the EU was being petty and unfair to impose the third country rules on the UK. He said the visa/border rules were often ignored in the 70s ( he had no evidence of this though), and he said there was no reason why the EU couldn't just ignore the rules now, but only for the UK. So he thought the UK was fine to to clamp down on people moving here from Europe, but he expected Europe to allow UK people to travel freely in their countries. You can't reason with that level of delusional mentality tbh, their beliefs are like religious feelings to them, and logic or honesty don't come into it.

2020 was also the start of the Covid pandemic so no travelling for a while probably had a lot to do with many Brits leaving - paperwork and 'language barriers' are just an excuse for laziness or British exceptionalism in my opinion. Referendum was in 2016 so for people to be still complaining about the consequences is ridiculous. It was about 9 years ago, and as mentioned 5 years since they actually left, so more than enough time to get things in order.

I retired to Bulgaria while Brexit was being negotiated. Got my long term residency under article 50 and simply handed over my Brit driving license and was immediately issued a Bulgarian one. Now I have been here 8 yrs I have permanent residency status. Article 50, guaranteed residence to anyone with UK citizenship already living in the EU. All I had to do was apply to the ministry for immigration and the card was issued, after proving I had an income and would not be a burden on their state. These people in Spain knew that things were changing, they had their chance, like I did. Why do people assume that because someone is old they are incapable of realising they need help and didn't go to an immigration lawyer to sort it out for them, or more the case in Bulgaria, one of the many English speaking "fixers" who will help you for a fee. Bulgaria is similar to Spain in climate, except we have a very short winter, which is bloody cold. But then, I can afford to heat my house here while eating well, at home as well as in restaurants. Also, drink, smoke and save money. British economic migrants, because that is what we are, in Spain seem to have been monumentally blinded by British exceptionalism. Respect the rules and laws of your host country and you are welcome. While it is now harder to get residency here, it is not impossible. Why is it that so many British people living in the EU were so blind as to vote against their own interests? Then, whine because they were treated like foreigners who had not followed the rules! Ask them what they think of illegal immigrants to the UK...

I became a Spanish citizen 2 years ago and never been happier. I have paid tax in Gran Canaria for 17 years and when I retire I will get full UK pension, 50% Spanish pension and 350+ days of sunshine. My council tax is €300 a year, I get 75% off flights within Spain, 50% discount on electricity bills and I havent had to pay for public transport for 2 years. I made up my mind to renounce my UK citizenship after seeing Farage, Widdicombe etc turning their backs in the EU parliament and waving their pathetic little plastic flags. Good riddance to the UK😂

We are not leaving Spain because we don’t have to, If you didn’t take up permanent residency then you are a fool. We used a Gestionar to advise us and complete the paperwork which was less than €200. The cost of living is much better, Alcohol is much cheaper here of course but so is the cost of food and the quality of life is also much better. It is safer to walk about in Spain late at night and the test for driving is simple to do and they are VERY HELPFUL over the test.

@@whu58 , If you keep up with the EU new rules, much of what is happening is being applied to all EU member countries. Although each EU nation has some rules that are specific. Spain and Portugal have both had their best ever year in 2024 and as the news services have been reporting, over tourism in some areas has resulted in local protests. I can't see much changing though as holidaying in Spain and Portugal is always going to be popular as it is blessed with great weather, easy to get to and value for money. Plus of course it's not only Brits that holiday there.

The British have been saying that Spain would sink without them for 50 years. The Spanish economy, after five years of Brexit, is the one that is growing the most in Europe and that of the United Kingdom has been in decline for seven years. End of story.
