in my personal experience, it is vital to use either ceramic coating or occasionally using some sort of vinyl restoration product to bring back vitality. Sun damage is definitely #1 and IF you park your wrapped vehicle in the same spot and same position every day, you risk having more damage to one side or part of the wrap and not others, creating noticeable fading or discoloration depending of the type of Wrap involved (color-changing wraps tend to change colors or go black eventually ). just a heads up for those of you without garages.

I had this problem with the roof on my Kia. The Avery vinyl I used was rated for 5 years on vertical surfaces and 3 years on horizontal surfaces. The shiny outer layer started to peel after a little over 3 years...it took 4.5 hrs to get the vinyl off the roof. But I didn't ceramic coat it, took it through car washes and parked it outside 100% of the time. In the future, I'll either peel it at the first signs of damage, or I'll sell the car before it can happen. lol

I have my wrap (Avery SWF900) on my MR2 for 2,5 years now. No coating except for the occasional wax after washing, maybe once every half year.. The car always sits outside. But I think the Dutch weather isn't bad enough to damage it. It still looks great when it's washed. Looking for many years to come.

Hey! I have owned taxis in the Stockholm area, Sweden. We have a winter climate that is very tough for the cars with a lot of gravel and salt splash during the winter months. It has lasted well...been OK for 2-2 1/2 years, then the edges have started to loosen and the surface has faded.

if you bought all the tools then you're already in it, backing out now would be a waste, better to mess up then buy everything and never try, if you want practice start with your hood, most car hoods are one piece and you can lift it up so you can strech under so it's very easy

Handed down the 240 to my son and this will be the wrap we go with. FYI the wrap on my 300zx is over 10 years old and still looks new because it is always garaged. Wraps can last a looooooooooong time if properly protected.

Nice wrap. Personally, I would choose a nice paint job over a wrap though. I know its a higher cost up front but not having to worry about changing out a wrap every few years is worth it in my opinion.

Most people don't even keep there cars that Long. If you are wrapping your car yourself you could do it 5-7x for the price of an okay paint Job as well.

One of the best parts of wrap is you can do crazy shit w it, protect paint underneath, and maintain sellability for after you done w it. If peeled within a few years its a couple hours to reveal a perfectly preserved car underneath.

In Arizona where I live my VW GTI was indigo blue paint & the paint last three years. The entire car body have faded paint everywhere. This Vw was outside 24 hours a day no garage, A lot of bright sunny and hot weather. I do not know how long aftermarket vinyl wrap on a car body will last in Arizona???

I tried wrapping the roof of my car black and completely botched it. That's not as easy as you make it look. I had bubbles, dirt and scratches. I started with a clean surface. Used the proper tools. Just wasn't happening.

i can say my expirience but from lets say 20 years before.. i work on an advertisment company we use to cover delivery trucks and busses...we had several vinils that we used and they where from 3 year 5 year and 7 year life span we had even worst than them but they where for other uses it was all depend on how clean was the surface the temperature of place and vihecle and ofcorce the type of vinil.... so the 3 year span is not bad but if things not changed there must be a 7 year and 5 year life span of vinils out there...the cost is rising though and for sure how you treat your car does have a role in the longlivity of the material ....that was my expirience back then

It got damaged more on the window probably because class is an insulator. The roof is metal, so it'd spread that heat to every other metal piece and keep the wrap generally a lot cooler im guessing.

Couple of questions. First, when the wrap is worn out, did it protect the paint underneath? If I remove it, will it damage the paint under the wrap? Secondly, how much does wrap cost for a typical car? Is it cheaper than a paint job?

Price wise, I think they both can be cheap and expensive depending on the quality. I think the wrap is a good choice for people leasing the car for 2 years and they just want to change the color and tear it off before they return it. otherwise, paint might be a better choice because it will last much longer and you can polish the clear coat. So in a long run, a decent paint should be cheaper comparing with replacing the wrap every 2-3 years.

Theyre the same. High quality of both range from $4000-$8000 and you use the same/similar chemicals to protect them. So its cheaper to paint a car and just re do the clear coat every 2 years because if the paint is damaged its like $100 for small repairs vs having to re wrap sections or the whole car. Especially if you live in an area where you cant garage a car regularly.

So if I wrapped it and maybe after three years removed it, wouldn't the paint underneath be just like new? Or, does the wrap damage the paint under it in any way? So, essentially, if paint lasts three years, and I cover it with wrap and then remove it after three years, when I remove it I would be getting another three years out of the finish because the paint underneath is essentially new, right?
