What is meant by lockout? Is it when the spool get stuck at the bottom?
@YankeeinSC1

NO... IT IS THE GLIDER FLYING IN AN UNDESIRED DIRECTION where it is aerodynamically unable to turn away from, because the tow line loading in that direction is stronger than the aerodynamic forces the glider can generate.

@uriukti
@uriukti 2 жыл бұрын

Is there enough time and altitude to throw reserve in this scenario?

If you look closely at the shadow you can see that he did throw the reserve at the last moment, which saved him. It probably would have been better if he weightshifted to the right and pulled the right brake to simply stop the spiral, thought

Beginning is the most dangerous part.... Even an EN-A wing can not save you all the time... At least the student pilot let the wing recover on its own by holding on the risers 😅 Glad to hear he is OK
@renedekker9806
@renedekker9806 9 ай бұрын
You don't see the glider, so it is unclear what the cause is. My guess is that the glider is collapsed on the left side from the beginning. You see that he pulls a lot of brake on the right side at the start to compensate. Then he lets go of that brake to pull the release; should have done that with his other hand. And he pulls the release while the cable is still under tension. Then he doesn't manage to grab the brake again, which causes him to spiral down. Of course, the winch driver should have released the tension, or even cut the cable. Glad that he survived.

Have a look at the shadow of the glider on the ground at the beginning of the video. It's close to 90 degrees off the winching direction. Pilot error leading to lock out to the left. Then the guy even let's go of his breaks. Many things went wrong here. Thanks for sharing.
@renedekker9806
@renedekker9806 9 ай бұрын
@@haukeplambeck You are correct. In a step-by-step analysis, you can just see the left tip of the glider at 0:10 and it does not look collapsed. But you can also clearly see that his left hand is high up, while his right is braking hard, but the glider is still pulling to the left. Maybe the left brake line was wrapped around and stuck between the risers, it looks a bit sketchy? Anyways, I agree he should not have let go of the brakes, and definitely not the right brake. Lucky to land in the tree.

@@haukeplambeck Good spot! Almost 90 deg off to the left, so when he let go the right break to release ................ Wouldn't have been an issue if he put his left hand up, but I can't help wondering why someone is learning on a glider with trimmers.

@@renedekker9806 @kevinshort3943 I do not know for sure but maybe someone else knows if it is possible at all to escape a full fledged lockout. I think it's not possible for the pilot to escape it once in. The forces are too high and the aerodynamic effects can't be compensated by brakes. I had one lockout 15seconds after take off on my very first winch in 1999. The line snapped due to the forces in play. Was scary at the time. 30m over ground. I had no experience with winching then. Only got back onto a winch in 2022.

@@MrGoMario I agree. Many things went wrong here. The line should have snapped as well once the pressure is too high. Accidents and near accidents are seldom caused by one single factor or mistake. They usually are a bunch of errors and cascades of errors. Choose your school wisely new pilots!

how and why did the glider entered spiral after he unlocked himself?
@abilashaadhikesavan5375

If you notice, his weight was entirely on his left.. while releasing the winch, he pulled the left brake hard to gain some traction to release.. hence the spiral..

basicly he lets go of the right brake, glider gets into the spiral and since he's getting pulled, he lost his altitude almost instantly. he could try breaking right side and get out of spiral but he throws the reserve instead
