@@spongedog0013 Tripmine studios have lesser people than crowbar collective. So, that why they need a lot of time and patient to develop. Despite, they had join forces 8 years ago with Guard Duty. So, my prediction will be in 2025. If we can survived and wish the dumbass world leader don't start ww3.

What's even more amazing is that the source engine is a modified version of the goldsrc engine which was a heavily modified quake engine. The quake engine was also modified for other games like call of duty, making the quake engine a versatile engine which created another versatile engine

If we use that logic, then Source Engine should only be called Quake Engine 2.5, when the only thing left of that should be a few lines of code and the rest is brand new. The Titanfall Engine probably has less code remains yet. It's no longer right to be called Source Engine, as this is not Quake Engine too.

For those who are wondering why this can not replace SSR/ray tracing. It can, in some scenarios, but it has shortcomings. This technique is mainly intended for static objects. Particles, projectiles, characters... stuff that moves won't be reflected. Technically you can update the cubemaps on the fly, but it gets quite costly quite fast if you need to support multiple probes. Also if the surrounding geometry can not be approximated by a box, then you need more costly tricks for proper correction (eg ray marching through depth map). Also, you need some way to blend the results near intersection of two cubemaps so that you don't get visible seams: that's not always trivial either.

Nope. The source does not render the player entity in 3D scene, his weapons/hands are attached to a player camera. There are some community workarounds, like using func_monitors but in 98,9% results will be so bad you won't use them ever again (plus there is still no player model to represent the player).

@@bbenjoe I wouldn't say that "perfectly" explains it. That's pretty old info :D There's been a func_reflective_glass entity available for like a decade. All you need is that (Which I have in the bathroom in this video) and a 3rd person player model and you are good to go.

I think Apex (Racing Evoluzione) used something very similar to this on the original Xbox. I'm not sure if I'm correct about that, but you should check it out if you get the chance. The reflections in that game as far as the environment goes are really impressive.

I hope these models and textures will have best quality, i.e. polygon amount, size in pixels. As development can take a long time and all assets can become outdated. For example, Black Mesa was in development since 2005 and some textures look bad, but nonetheless BM is a great game overall

These are not real time reflections. So only static objects will appear in the reflection. Just like regular cubemaps.

Maybe. First we need the character model, then it needs fully animated, then we need to evaluate if the performance hit is worth it.

@Jon Boy The source engine is honestly one the most impressive out there. The jump from HL GoldSrc to HL2 source was such a big jump and then Crowbar collective gave us Xen recently.
