Parallel Universe - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Bass and Guitar cover)

Parallel Universe is a great song to practice alternate picking while slightly palm muting the strings. I used my Telecaster because the tone is a bit thicker than a Stratocaster which works great for single notes like in this song. At the end of the song I play the solo that John played on the Slane live DVD.
This was probably the first time I heard Flea play with a pick!

I’ve never tried the Moog pedal so I have no idea. If it’s set to unity gain it’ll probably not make a lot of difference to the overall tone….

It depends on the song. Each bass has its own strength and personality. That being said, the Music Man is my number one!

@@RedHotChiliRiffs I'd be interested in your opinion about the strengths of the Modulus. Sustain, low end, growl, feel of the neck, overall feel of the bass. Also how light is it?

I’ve owned a purple 5-string Modulus Flea bass from 2000 until 2010. I sold it because I never really liked the sound of the bass. It has tons of low end and a lot (too much) of high frequencies. It definitely lacks in punchy mid frequencies. It’s those mid frequencies that translate well to a recording and make your bass sound cut through a mix. It has sustain for days but because of the graphite neck it doesn’t sound particularly warm. It plays great, the neck is really smooth and you can get a nice low action on it. I didn’t notice anything special about the weight. I’ll post some pictures of my old Modulus bass on Instagram if you’re interested. I’ll probably record a video where I’ll compare the Modulus, Fender Flea active, Fender Flea passive, Music Man and the Chinese Flea bass.

@@RedHotChiliRiffs oh yeah a video comparison would be awesome. You could also just focus on the Modulus, Fender Flea and MM so it's not too much work for you. It's interesting that you thought it was weak in the mix. I actually thought it was one of the main reasons Flea used it for so long as it cuts though the mix like butter, on stage or in the studio. At least as far as I can tell. And sure some pics of that bass would be cool. I've never seen a purple Modulus Flea 😵 If you have a scale can you weigh that Modulus 4? I wonder how light it is due to the graphite neck.
