We responded to a night time call on the highway for a wreck. Private ambulance was transporting the critically ill patient, lights & siren. Traffic was light, and I was following the first ambulance to the hospital. To my surprise, a non emergency vehicle passed me and slipped in just 4’ behind the transporting ambulance. High speed, pitch black except for vehicle lights, extremely dangerous thing to do. He stuck like glue, though. I radioed dispatch and advised them of the dangerous idiot tailgating the patient transport. A voice came over the radio, “I’ve got this.” Just over the next hill a deputy was waiting to pounce. He had that car pulled over in no time. The teamwork caused it all to come together so perfectly. I thanked the deputy via radio and heard back, “Any time.”

That would definitely be the sensible thing to do, rather than delay help to a patient in a possibly life threatening condition. It’s the police’s job to deal with traffic infractions; the paramedics’ job is to get to the patient as quickly and safely as possible, administer emergency medical aid as needed, then get the patient expeditiously to the hospital safely. What if the person they were supposedly racing to had had a heart attack, and because these paramedics decided to halt their journey, slowly walk to the vehicle behind them to tell the motorist off, then saunter back to the ambulance with no great urgency as he did in the video, that made the difference between the patient living and dying? The only people delaying getting to the injured/ill patient were the paramedics. Obviously the VW driver was wrong for taking advantage of the ambulance speeding through the traffic, but what the paramedics did was potentially far worse.

@@guyspooner4580 Not a smart move at all. The police are the people whose job it is to enforce traffic laws. And you never know what kind of violence you could be met with if you confront a stranger in their car. In this case, clearly the ambulance was in no danger, its pathway to the emergency was in no way being impeded by the vehicle behind it. No, the paramedics were just pissed that someone else was wrongly benefiting from their expedited journey through the congested traffic, and thought they’d take the law into their own hands. It could have ended very badly for a number of reasons. They should’ve just alerted the cops instead, who are equipped to deal with situations like this. The paramedics were very foolish and delayed their journey to help somebody possibly in a life threatening situation. No doubt they were rightly disciplined for their potentially dangerous and very negligent behaviour once the footage was released. If they keep making a habit of interrupting their journeys to emergencies to chastise motorists, someone’s going to die sooner or later.

This is an ambulance, the priority is to transport the patient to the closest hospital, I don’t know for sure what the patient is in for, but if it was something with life threatening conditions, like a cardiac arrest, stroke, loss of blood, then literally every seconds of delay can result in grave consequences for the patient's health and potentially even cost them their life!

Now the Golf is driving split lane, not something they do regularly, with the added Adrenaline of breaking the law and the flashing lights in front of them, it's incredibly easy for them to be looking on the right getting past a large vehicle like a truck or SUV and doesn't notice the ambulance breaking because someone in front of them (that thr Gold can't see either way because of how big the ambulance is) does something unexpected and that nice break pedal you assume he knows how to use, isn't being pressed.

Tailgating slows the ambulance because the ambulance driver has to focus more attention on the car behind and manage their speed and braking. Ambulances in the UK have multiple ambulances en-route to an emergency call. So if one is delayed for whatever reason then the other one will get there. That's why you'll often see an ambulance with its lights on. But travelling at a slow speed. Because in all likelihood they're not going to be needed. I'm not sure if that's the case here. It seems especially unlikely since they're on a motorway. But it's possible that the ambulance could have time to stop because of that.

That happens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia almost all the time. The only time it doesn’t happen is when the cars (can be 3-4 cars long) or motorcycles (can be under 20 units) that are following sees police. Our ambulances doesn’t stop for that.

When a vehicle tailgates ambulance on blue lights it should classed higher than dangerous driving. 1)The Ambulance may need to a Emergency stop and the tailgater could plough into the back. 2) The tailgater is Forcing the ambulance crew to make the decision to slow down and turn the blue lights off to avoid a potential accident which will risk the lives of the people they are Serving.

a front and rear dash cam on an ambulance would let them get plate numbers without having to stop... they can go to the emergency and after everything is dealt with, send the footage to the police to mail guys like him tickets for everything he did wrong. in this clip alone i see like 5 tickets

"Overuse".. no such thing. They can use them in any situation they can justify doing so, same as police. If anyone "overuses" their lights and sirens it's the fire brigade. I've called them out before as a police officer to an RTC that's hours old and neither party injured for them to come flying down on blue lights.... blue lights for a no injury RTC with no immediate risk to anyone, considering we'd been there 2 hours. Any time the fire service deploy to a job it always seems to be a blue light job, whether there's a need to be there urgently or not.

In Germany, you have to make space for emergency vehicles at slow speeds even if nothing is coming. Because once you stopped, it's sometimes hard to move out of the way. If you don't, you loose your license for a month, get 2 points and pay 200€. Using the Rettungsgasse without permission isn't punished much harder unfortunately, just the fine goes up to 240€.
