LYRICS
I love making you believe
What you get is what you see
But I’m so fake happy
I feel so fake happy
And I bet everybody here
Is just as insincere
We’re all so fake happy
And I know fake happy
I been doin’ a good job
Of makin’ em think
I’m quite alright
Better hope I don’t blink
You see it’s easy when I’m stompin’ on a beat
But no one sees me when I crawl back underneath
If I smile with my teeth
Bet you believe me
If I smile with my teeth
I think I believe me
Oh please
Don’t ask me how I’ve been
Don’t make me play pretend
Oh no, oh what’s the use?
Oh please
I bet everybody here is fake happy too
And if I go out tonight
Dress up my fears
You think I look alright with these
Mascara tears
See I’m gonna draw up my lipstick wider than my mouth
And if the lights are low they’ll never see me frown
I know I said that I was doing good
And that I’m happy now
I shoulda known when things were going good
That’s when I’d get knocked down

3:37 > 3:44 "after laughter is about the look on people's faces when they're done laughing. if you watch somebody long enough, there's always this look that comes across their face when they're done smiling, and i always find it really fascinating to wonder what it is that brought them back to reallity. so that's what after laughter is."

Grammys are paid for by record labels. Similarly, movie and TV studios bribe judges for Oscar's and Emmy's. Just being nominated is good for business. We are told that these awards are the pinnacle achievement. And most people believe that. And that's why the big wigs bribe judges, in hopes of a greater return in sales. She's not fat, black and naked enough to win a Grammy. Plus, she sings too well. She's more talented than T-Swift and most of the R & B singers IMO. Yes, she deserves more praise than she receives. That is correct. Maybe someday that will happen.

This is a song I come back to every few months when I'm feeling down. It reminds me that although I'm struggling, I'm not alone, and that I'll get through it. Hayley is such a role model for mental health and this song exemplifies it more than any other IMHO. Completely underrated song too. If you're out there and reading this: hang on - we'll all get through this together ❤️

What I find interesting conceptually about this video is that Hayley is dressed up as a mermaid would be on land. Which also lends itself to the "fish out of water" idea. She is an outcast in a world full of smiles.

i relate her outfit to the part of the songs that says "if i go out tonight, dress up my fears", she literally dressed up her fears, this was no easy thing for hayley to do, it's kinda like her trying to put on some type of mask on so she can blend in and fit in with others, trying to make everything that's underneath the mask look better.
@immiwright7386
@immiwright7386 6 жыл бұрын
indiana I guess you could also say that her ‘dressing up her fears’ is, essentially, her putting all her anxieties and worries and bad thoughts into beautiful lyrics for the rest of the world. Turning ugly thoughts into beautiful words.

I think the video is great and really captures the deeper meaning of the lyrics. Just like the happy refrain of the melody, Hayley is seen as carefree - dancing around, but always with her back to the camera so you never see her face. She stands out among a sea of 'fake happy' anonymous robots. Then right at the end she turns and you realise she is fake happy- just like the rest of them. 'I bet everybody here is fake happy too'. So clever!

I just wanna to say to the beautiful and charismatic Hayley, really really 'THANK YOU VERY MUCH', I mean it sincerely. i really love how they started the video with the close up of her face and then it got blurred before closing up and then she turned around. it's really nice how the whole point of the video is to not see her face while she interacts with other people, other fake happy people. it feels kinda unsettling because you can't know the expression she's making nor you can know the expression the others made when they saw her and that pretty much sums up the meaning of the song, of how people hide beneath a mask of fake happiness. and then when it gets to the end and she turns around, you can see the tears track on her cheeks, that she's been crying all along and when she puts the mask on, like all the other people do, it's like she's putting the mask on for herself too, no longer being able to face that she's not really happy as she knows but the others don't.

This song definitely applies to my social anxieties. Who here wouldn't like the freedom to skip and dance anywhere without having to worry about random strangers and what they think of you... Fake happy is the norm, so it's hard to be as expressive as you want.
@nathangriffin1173
@nathangriffin1173 6 жыл бұрын
"fake happy" generally refers to how people try to put a smile on and stay optimistic, how tf are you going to feel better about dancing if no one feels obliged to treat you positively? And unless you typed that messaged from some backwards, third world country I'm pretty sure it's easier then it ever has been to be as expressive as you want. I don't get what your problem is?

This song is so deep for the whole world, we all judge ourselves whenever we feel anything uncomfortable (sadness,grief, anger, irritability etc.) and instead of feeling those emotions we run from them and put on a mask (fake happy) but the way healing works is different from what we’ve been taught, you have to feel to heal. No fake it til you make it, that just perpetuates what you’re not trying to feel.

I am not sure if Paramore meant to do this, but this song, for me, speaks to the phenomenon that happens with people that suffer from depression/anxiety and are around people that do not. The song is saying, let me feel what I am feeling. Stop telling me to get better or be happy because it is not that easy. Stop down playing my mental illness because you do not suffer from it. Just let me cry a little bit longer.
@Meredith.A

Zoe Melody exactly..I cannot even begin to explain how true that statement is..my anxiety, OCd depression,. panic disorder and ADHD have just taken over my life. I've become not capable of actually living and I feel like a prisoner of these invisible bars keeping me from living. I've seen people that suffer from cancer have a better outlook and more positive than I am..it's really shitty when you are given life but cannot seem to execute it because your so trapped in your own head and unhappiness ..ugh the worst part is my own therapist said "just don't listen to the negative thoughts" it's so much more than that . the only person that really understand my circumstances is only myself. I hate when people say stupid shit like be more positive, bro no offense.but you truly don't know or feel what I am going thru emotionally it's unexplainable it's not a competition but only I am me and only I feel like this, I mean scientifically only I have this brain. but I do agree sometimes people relish in they're depression they almost embrace it and instead of getting better (because they have pry given up) they go the opposite way and almost make themselves more sick . even tho I have been on both sides of the spectrum I do not want to live this way it's not even living at this point . I am putting in effort but the truth is it takes so much work and usually it's not curable but it can become liveable which is my goal at this point

Constantly being positive is impossible and it’s exhausting to try, so even if everyone thinks you’re Mr/Mrs Sunshine, you don’t have to stay positive all day. The whole point of the song is covering your unhappiness and putting on a show for people. Hayley herself has a lot of anxiety, as well, so I think that's why they had her dress so wildly and dance around the city in front of strangers. Most other people judge your appearance first rather than who you are personally, so maybe her pretending to be confident and content with herself is the direction they were trying to go with the vid. And then of course, at the end she is still sad and insecure on the inside amongst everyone else doing the same thing (just maybe not as evidently) and while they judge her, she knows that they are hiding their emotions the same way. Hope that made sense lol that's what I got from the video at least.

I've been applying this song to my life lately. At work, I greet customers and co-workers, but I don't mean it at all. Being nice to people is part of the job, but I just can't bring myself to care about any of them. But anything that helps my family pay bills and put food on the table.

Definitely how Hayley (probably) intended the song to be understood.
