I can confirm that this is very much a thing that happens. I'm a survivor and I've been in a somewhat similar position to Angel before. At some point its just a chore and you do not care much anymore. Playing it up for others sake and also, just to get trough it quicker was very much a thing i did for a long time. At that one point where it turns into a chore there is no pleasure in any of it anymore. Although it is very possible to somehow get that back if you ever find a person you can trust. It is still something that i kinda struggle with today, it happens randomly from time to time, and oh god does it suck if you actually want to feel something again.

Everyone's talking about the "swear I don't even miss the pleasure I can no longer feel" line (which checks out because it's amazing) but no one's really talking about "It's what I'm good and it's all I really know how to do". It's fucking stellar, and will probably be the biggest roadblock in Angel's path to redemption, if he's even gunning for that. He solidly believes that he's in this kinda situation because he's just built for it. I feel like he thinks he's only cut out for this kind of life, and that he might as well suck it up (haha) and get good at what he gets, because it's all he's ever going to get.

I truly love how brought out Angel's character in this song! Showing that he's not helpless and capable of taking care of himself, that's he's been in hell long enough to know how things play out in the end, and that he's more than just a fuck toy for ppl. I also love how hints bits of his past/job, showing that he's unphased by both pleasure and by pain now, clearly hinting/the small faded laugh of Valentino in the back, which is an obvious hint that Val has hurt him so much worse, to the point he's hinted that he doesn't even put up a fight anymore to break free from Valentino. This is absolute fire, and I've listened to both versions endlessly. I'm a (usually gay but been straight for pay) male s*x worker, a heroin addict, and a pretty small guy, so I pay my bills keeping up a generally twinky, femme appearance, since my customer base is overall much older men. Usually not the thing to throw around online, I know, but there's nobody in my life at this point who's shy to those facts, and that probably says enough about me already. For the people who this might sound surreal or unbelievable to, if you spend one night in the gay drug scene, you'll meet another 5 or 10 of me any day of the week guarenteed. Its so much more common than any people who dont live it ever seem to realize. Just normal people who got hooked on a chemical one way or another, ran out of income and had nothing else to sell but themselves, and gave up everyone and everything they cared about because the drugs were better, or they needed the numbness, or the sex made them feel wanted at least at the start, or they thought they fell in love with someone who got them hooked on something and acrually had a dozen other someones and before you know it youre the product and not the customer. You don't really share your sob story because everyone's is fucking ugly and horrific and you all pretend you're there because you want to be, and because keeping up that appearance is sometimes what keeps you alive. But what isn't so common is an articulation of our existence in popular culture-- and if it is, then it's antagonistic or put there as an object of disgust and moral degradation. I stumbled across Hazbin and then this song fucking off on KZbin about a year ago and it stopped me dead. It was actual culture media, with someone like me, who wasn't just on screen to be scorned-- but instead as a protagonist, and being portrayed in the most literal sense, as /redeemable/, and underneath the addiction and the sex work, as an actual person with nuance, made to be sympathized with and not scorned or as a walking warning for the dangers of substance abuse. This song is the one I listen to before and after I meet with a customer I hate, when I'm alone and taking a hit and thinking about how little shit matters, when I'm dopesick and have to work because there's nobody there to save me but me, or when I'm dealing with the people who basically own my ass because of these drugs and it feels like there's nothing I can do about it. It might seem a little silly to fuck up your life that bad and then find comfort in an animated character and songs about them, but this is firstly, just damn good music, and secondly, whoever wrote it knew what they were talking about or did some extensive research. It's remarkably apt, and uses proper drug terminology thats fairly uncommon outside the scene, it makes me feel like someone really knows and is choosing to empathize with me instead of be disgusted, that someone gets it and that one of these days I'm gonna decide to break out of this shit and get out of here, that I really will get better someday and I'm not gonna die in some ratty hotel bathroom, because I've been there. It really motivates a little fight in me when I really need it, and when youre mostly alone thats invaluable. I'm not much of a crier, dope tends to numb out a lot of that honestly, but this song gets to me sometimes and I'm glad it does. It feels good to break through that wall. A genuine thank you to ParanoidDJ for making something that hit an audience that they probably didn't even think it would reach, because it's gotten me up and going when I needed something to make me. And because of their realistic depictions of the subject matter, I only hope that someone so gifted doesn't have too much real experience in any of it, because they've helped me more than I could really say and they deserve wonderful things with how talented they clearly are and how hard they work. Having a skill to make music like this should really get someone where they want in life. I'm very blessed in that I know when I choose to quit this life I do have a few good people on the other side who are just waiting on me to make the choice, and sometimes when I'm playing this shit on repeat its the only time that feels real. I don't expect anybody to really read this novel or anything, but I just wanted to express how grateful I am that this music is here and hopefully give proper appreciation to the artist so they can understand the gravity of the various lives they've touched with it. Ive showed it to several other people who also are along for the ride with my lifestyle, and I know I'm not the only one jamming to it on the regular now. Both versions. The new version coming out I waited counting the hours for and I'm so glad I did, because it absolutely blew my mind and I must have already listened to it damn near 50 times. Keep up the amazing work, PDJ, and know that you're changing lives that are really living this shit out here. Please keep putting out Angel Dust music, and I'll be listening to every single one. This song captures Angel's character very well. He's cheerful, sassy, and fully prepared to put anyone who tries to screw with him (literally in some cases) in their place. However, despite cheekly throwing sexual innuendos left and right, as well as offering himself up to anyone who can pay well, deep down he hates his afterlife of prostitution, but feels to trapped by it to do little more than find some short-lived satisfaction from it. Even with Cherri Bomb and the Hazbin Hotel slowly helping him recover, it's likely he'll be stuck in this cynical mindset for a long time and will still hear Valentino's depraved laughter mocking him in his head for ages, even if he manages to cut the rat out of his afterlife completely.

The first chorus got me especially with the clever use of lyrics, after several originals I am still baffled over how well you're able to fit those, especially since you told that you create them after the music itself. The way you let darkness slip through in the middle of your songs is starting to become as signature of your originals, and a great one at that. I SWEAR TO GOD, I found this song in like late May of 2022, and I've been listening ever since, honestly. Now It's 2023 and I've played it on repeat 3 or 4 times along with 'Break Free' by Ariana Grande and Zedd. They both sound similar, but both convey different messages. I feel like I shave some sort of emotional connection to it. It shows a reminiscing type of feeling with a pink aurora borealis flowing in the air when you're reminiscing about your past, rather it being sad or happy, which is what I call an Emotional Pink aesthetic. I don't know what I would have been listening to more often than this (other than Break Free). This should be on billboards because you deserve that recognition. Much Love to PARANOiD DJ.

The lyrics, as usual tell a story. The beat goes well with the story and enhances the narrative flow. The feeling of Angel Dust being trapped bt the fact that the cage is all he knows so he wouldn't leave even if the door was open is fantastic, and onfe again, the sound design was great. I think this is now my favorite song you've done! I love seeing this aggressive side of Angel, especially because we see him being so casual about hopping into a turf war in the pilot. The subtle laughter from Valentino in one spot is an amazing addition. A nice reminder that Angel's not always as in control as he feels sometimes.

Fuck, its clear how talented you are at song crafting and characterization by how deftly you always handle the "reprise" moments in your songs, especially here -- the moments where the main hook of the piece gets shifted or twisted slightly to show you the layers of complexity, of pain, of struggle, of anger, of humanity (yes yes haha) in these characters. It shows the depth of which you understand about the characters and the how good you are at thematic crafting (not to mention how catchy, punchy, and perfect the lyrics are!) I swear the "reprise" bridge of this song fucked me up bc of how amazingly you do this. All your songs, but I think it hits especially well with Angel bc he is a character that has this loud flirty in-your-face exterior that is there /because/ its used to try to protect him from or at least blunt the pain and trauma of his situation. You can hear how tired he is of trying to fight against everything around him and inside him, how much easier and less painful it is to just say "fuck it, do your worst, nobody else cares about me so why should I" than it is to try to face the true horror of how much shit he lives through daily. Sorry this came out as an "in this essay I will..." comment but part of what I love about your stuff is not only is it technically and performance-wise super high quality, but your love and understanding of the characters always is the groundwork, which sets it apart. I just fucking adore your stuff, DJ.
