Last time, I beat Pokemon Trading Card Game for the Game Boy Color using only Paras and Parasect and then using the deck from the worst person ever, Matthew. Now it's time to move onto the sequel, Pokemon Card GB2: Here Comes Great Team Rocket! which was a Japan only release in 2001. Luckily, we have an English translation available. It's time to complete that using only Paras and Parasect.

You know, I really like the idea of the rocket island rules. For your challenge it didn't really matter but for a standard run it seems like it would actually make a player have to rethink their deck and try new things, which imo is really cool. And frankly I'd rather play in this era than the modern era with Pokemon GX and V and VMAX and Tag Team everywhere >_>

Yep, the last time I played the first GB TCG game I destroyed everything with Blastoise and Gyrados. Having to try new stuff every major duel is awesome to void just steam rolling everything with the old meta decks.

I recently beat this game without any trainer cards. Was a lot of fun. Out of the original 151 species I ended up using 85 of them, because you're so underpowered you have to tailor your deck for the opponent every single battle. Almost feels like this how pokemon was meant to be played. They give you 150 characters you should be using more than six!

hey now! tag team are no longer in standard (and tbh gooooood riddance, they should not have been considered base pokemon, or at least had greater drawbacks to their attacks. for VMAX its at least an evolution and a lot of V pokemon you can play around way easier)

@@autumnwyvern489 I still don't like the notion of Vs/GXs/etc letting you play evolution pokemon as basics. I think it speeds the game up far beyond what I find enjoyable, and makes it harder to use "standard" pokemon evos. I think it discards one of the biggest things Pokemon has going for it, the whole aspect of evolution. When I can just slam a Charizard down on turn 1 because it's a special kind, then that makes other strong, single-stage pokemon lose a good deal of their advantages. Why use regular Snorlax when you can just use a V/GX version of a stage 2 pokemon that's more powerful? And the extra prizes that these mons give, while helping to balance things, still makes the game less enjoyable for me because it speeds up the game. I realize this is a preference thing, but I like my games to not be very short. Having them end after only 3, maybe even only *2* pokemon have been defeated just feels like a cheaper experience.

Speaking of Heidi’s rule… what if you did a challenge run with no trainer cards? You could keep special energies if playing in the sequel, but you’d have to rely on attacks otherwise, so it may make for some interesting deck building and bench choices since you’d have to consider whether to include Pokémon for power or special attacks to replace your trainers and what to make active or bench.

It was nice to see a video about TCG GB 2. Wish they’d have kept releasing TCG games through the Neo and Adv eras. This game also had a ton of original Dark cards like Dark Venusaur and Dark Clefairy, which was a nice touch.

This is my big honkin' during-the-video SOC comment: It's Team Great Rocket, man. That's what GR stands for. You keep saying Great Team Rocket. Dark Venusaur is terrifying. It poisons you and only gives you a 1/3 chance of attacking or retreating. Oh. That's how you handle the rules. They just don't attack. Wait. What the heck? How did you get that picture of the coaster? Do you OWN a promotional Electabuzz? I. Hate. Catherine. Even more than Claire. (I can't wait for Claire) Oh, right. The maze. I used gamefaqs for that. Yeah, I guess Claire is pretty easy if you have Gusts of Wind. Or a colorless card. Ash releasing his Butterfree took FOREVER. I just noticed that your Zapdos popup says "choose a Pokémon" as opposed to the game's "a Pokémon is chosen at random". That better not have been a real card. Rocket Charmander is actually pretty great. You can attach multiple energies to him per turn, and both of his evolutions require discarding energy. The king isn't remotely as tough as Allison. You lucked out. There would have been even more cards in this game, but... there wasn't mush room. [rimshot]

FYI, assuming the AI mostly carries over from the first game, “boss” opponents have some extra code that allows them to manipulate their opening hands to always have multiple basic Pokémon, and a few other unfair advantages.

I wish it didn't force you to change your deck around. Giving certain types advantages or changing the actual rules is something that hopefully makes you rethink how you approach certain matches, that's cool. Also I think it's a shame the best out of three isn't used more often. One problem with these games is that there's really no need for skill when you can just get lucky. Obviously, that's the nature of card games, but it makes matches potentially anticlimactic, and having Club Leaders and whatnot be best out of three would at least somewhat help with that.

Just found the channel recently because I love Parasect as well and have so far only seen the Parasect and Matthew runs, but greatly enjoyed all of them! Never really learned how to play the TCG as a kid but watching the strategy and deck building you do has made me consider dusting off my old cards and giving it a look! Oh, and I decided to look into why the new pair of shrooms were called "vending", as mentioned in the first part of this, and it's because they were available only through vending machines in Japan when they released in '98 or so, and are unfortunately untranslated in any physical release.

37:02 This is the *true* first appearance of the lost zone in the history of the Pokémon trading card game, it didn't get officially implemented into the physical card game until dphs era when lostgar and lost link mew happened. Didn't show up since, until sumo bloc with ultra prism to lost thunder (and lost thunder really played around with the lost zones, looking at you lost march and blacephalon), and those have since rotated out of standard and now it's nonexistent again.

Some of the abilities are super cool, but they peak with the grass rocket having a deck of cards that confuse themselves to use big moves/abilities to synchronize with this no grass mons getting status. If every gym leader had a creative ability like that (such as you don't have to pay for retreat or move costs for fire, or you can put two energy down per turn for water) it would be great, but man was grinding for double colorless and viable ghastleys a hassle.

I really liked these videos. I downloaded the rom for the first game and beat it using nothing but Pikachu/Raichus after watching your videos. My buddy is doing a Nido line only run and my GF started a Eeveelution run. The save state to find what I need was a godsend and it still took me hours to get the Ditto to trade for a promo Pikachu. You can actually run 7 pikachus in a deck if you use flying and the 2 surfing. Completed the game and got every card afterwards. The first time I ran through the game though squirle/Blastoise and pokemon breeder was the easiest way to win. Fully powered stage 2 pokemon on turn 2 steamrolls everything.

the electric GR boss definitely looked like it sucked with your ruleset. i liked it a lot in the game though, i used a water deck almost the whole time and with the +10 and the electric weakness i needed to change decks and i had a lot of fun with the fighting deck

I love this so much I'm doing a play through of my own using Heidi's stimulation of no trainers. (Cause she is waifu material) Turns out it's not that big of a difference. It's just slower. But seeing as you're filled to the gills with energy you don't need switches or gust of winds, and you don't gotta worry about a brick hand with only one Pokemon in play. Evolutions become even more clunky though.

And the people they kidnap and hold captive don't acknowledge their situations? Are we sure this isn't some kindergardner play pretend game? "My pokemon does more damage because I say so! No, my pokemon isn't weak to that type, it's my special rule! Your pokemon don't get to resist mine! You have to use this type of energy and have to have these pokemon! Whenever a card is discarded duing this match it gets entirely removed from play!" "I've got Courtney trapped on an island surrounded by lava, but you beat me so she gets to go free now. Same time tomorrow Courtney? It was fun playing with you!" 22:48-what the hell!? The move explicitly says it only works on benched pokemon! How the hell did it hit the active parasect? That's cheating even beyond making up arbitrary rules! Mistranslation? Except even looking the card up online includes the same thing about it only affecting benched pokemon. Must be a coding error or something then

This is how it was translated on the Bulbapedia article, so was probably just used from there or similar. It has been translated wrong since at least August 2008 (creation of the page for this Dark Gengar) from what I see.

18:10 Wrong Haunter. That's the re-released "power crept" one from XY Evolutions in 2016. That's why he has 10 more HP, which is now colored black. His level is in a different spot, the text font is different, Dream Eater does 30 more damage. The resistance is 10 less, and it's now weak to Darkness, which wasn't a type when this card first premiered. I love how they bothered to beef up this cards stats, despite the fact that even by 1997 standards this is still a pretty bad card, but is hilariously unplayable in the set it debuted. They could have made it do 200 damage, and no one would have run this crap. I mean what was the point of making a 20th anniversary set if you're just going to change the look and feel of all the retro chase cards? For no reason, literally none of them saw play because they weren't expensive Uber Holographic EX plus Alpha Ultra Rare basics with a million HP that do a million damage on turn two. Sorry... Small rant.😐 Really enjoying your content, dude. Keep it up. I love the retro Pokemon TCG.

If you dont want to play all the normal players, you could use this save file and skip them and only play the gym leaders with a challenge.
