A while back, I made a video all about looking at Lavender Town and I really enjoyed making that. I wanted to do that again, this time looking at everything about Cinnabar Island and the Pokémon Mansion. A special thanks to Mah-Dry-Bread for letting me use his save file from his Slowpoke only play through.

I have a theory about the burned down mansion. During development, it was originally planned to be the home of Moltres, but was repurposed at some point. After you get surf, you unlock a few optional dungeons. One is Seafoam Islands: an ice themed dungeon where you find Articuno at the bottom. Another is the Power Plant: an electric themed dungeon where you find Zapdos at the end. Finally there's Cinnabar Mansion: a fire themed dungeon that was made mandatory and teases at the existence of Mew and Mewtwo rather than having its own legendary present. Instead, Moltres was awkwardly plopped into Victory Road after you collect all 8 badges, and has to squat in a different location in every game. It's also worth mention that you find Jynx in (Japanese) Seafoam Islands, Electabuzz in the Power Plant, and Magmar in Cinnabar Mansion.

Red had Electibuzz, Japanese Green = Overseas Blue & had Magmar, While Japanese Blue had Jynx. I'm assuming that Cinnabar Mansion may have been an optional volcano at 1 point in early development rather than a required location giving Mewtwo's backstory. Could you imagine what it would have been like if Cerulean Cave were unguarded & accessed as soon as you got Surf?

@browncow5210 Actually no, in the prototype version moltres was suppose to be in Cerulean cave, it was supposed to be like an underground volcano area there’s even an email you can read on the computer on Cinnabar island in one of the labs that states how there’s a bunch of researchers that have found three caves pointing out to where the legendary birds might be in the first one they’re going to investigate it’s a really good cave which is what might be where Moltres was well originally because of cartridge limitations they had to remove all this and the things that ended up getting scrapped to make room for the game was some of the maps well Moltres was supposed to be where Mewtwo was supposed to be supposed to be in the silph co in the to be more than just what we got and what’s interesting is they were supposed to be a boss rush at the end Professor Oak was supposed to be the final boss they were supposed to be nine gym badges I don’t know where the ninth gym later was there was supposed to be in ninth town and it would just go on from there there were some other changes to their was originally supposed to be 191 Pokémon but we only got 186.

@WaterKirby1994 In the prototype version moltres was moved to the cerulean cave, it wasn’t unguarded, it was an underground volcano and swamp area, mewtwo was being protected in silph co after beating the elite four and getting all 9 badges you can fight a bunch of trainers including the gym leaders and Giovanni again and professor oak is the last trainer after you beat oak you can travel to the back room and find a roaming mewtwo level 65 with other wild Pokémon, Giovanni was using all three legendary birds, aerodactyl and a prototype Pokémon Madam which is what farfetch evolved into originally back when Pokémon had 191 Pokémon not 151 all this was cut due to cartridge limits.

The abandoned mansion for me as a kid was the creepiest place in the game. The idea that it was run down, poison and fire pokemon everywhere, burglars threatening you and creepy scientists and the left over diaries of a terrible mistake.... man it was so creepy to my child brain 😅

As a kid playing Pokemon Red, I had a head-canon that the chemical runoff from Mew experiments at the Pokemon mansion caused mutations in Pokemon along the shore, explaining the presence of Missingno.

We also should consider the rumor mill of Ditto being failed Mew clones, while the original games don't really show it, it is interesting that all the later games seem to want to keep Ditto in the Mansion. Its very likely its a subtle nod at the rumor being canon. Oddly the game never states they are trying to genetically clone mew in the dairies. The Pokedex for Mewtwo shows the true colors of "mews birth" if the way Mewtwo looks in those early games doesnt give it away on its own.

Consider that both Mew and Ditto are the same color, even when shiny and that both can Transform… Also, through cheating with GameShark, catching a Transforned Mew in Gen 2 gives you a Ditto instead.

@@moltenamber85 I believe that is true of any transformers mew in gens 1&2 thought. It's possible because Ditto was the only transformed mon obtainable in the wild that in these games it assumes that anything caught transformed was a Ditto.

Interesting note: As far as I've heard, it can be strongly inferred from a past interview that the "Ditto is a failed Mew clone" connection was probably not at all intended, but placements of Ditto in later games *_seem_* to indicate that they may have quietly adopted the fan-theory into canon-- or at least give fan-service toward it... which is cool if that's accurate because it's a widely-accepted and beloved concept.

It was definitely Blaine and I can prove it, you see in the prototype version there was more story that was cut due to cartridge limits, Blaine and fugi and others were hiding mewtwo at one point in fuchsia one of the buildings is locked and requires a key to open it they’re hiding proof of their involvement and investigations in mewtwo’s project, moltres was later moved to mewtwo’s cerulean cave and mewtwo is now at silph co a place that was cut due to cartridge limits, you need to defeat the elite four to get there and have all 9 gym badges, later on you’ll fight your way through the silph co league and you’ll find the gym leaders and more eventually you’ll find Giovanni who is there for mewtwo and then you can later fight professor oak the true final boss it was a test to see if you’re worthy to handle mewtwo, you take a warp to the back room and find more dairy entries of dr fugi having a change of heart in his sinister nature and asking mewtwo to forgive him for giving him a wicked heart, once red finds the mewtwo it’s level 65.

"Mew gave birth" Three words that strike a little chill into my heart even now. Even though we got breeding in Gen 2 I just can't shake the feeling that these heartless scientists realized that this was not something that should have ever happened. It sucks that it got retconned in the movie to Mewtwo being a clone of Mew instead of it's abominable offspring. The music, the journals, the labyrinthine structure of the manor, Gen 1's atmosphere still holds up even today.

In this case, both of those can be true at once. It's a reference to Dolly the Sheep and how it was born; a clone that was born via a live birth from the cloned subject.

Mewtwo still has some of the coolest lore in all of Pokemon. The fact that it's not even part of the main story, but it still has so much buildup really inspires awe in you. Everything about the atmosphere at the burned down mansion tells you that something ugly happened here...

@MishKoz Definitely and it comes full circle when you think about this and the prototype data we got turns out dr.fugi is the same fugi we rescue in lavender town, dr.fugi use to work for Giovanni and created mewtwo but once mewtwo escaped and killed the scientists it’s possible Fuji was the only survivor and over time that’s why Fuji knew Blaine the silos chief in the silph co and professor oak Giovanni needed mewtwo because it was created for team rocket I always wondered how Giovanni knew about the experiments of mewtwo I should have knew it was Giovanni’s research department that was doing this. There’s a lot of prototype that was cut in gen 1 that we never got due to cartridge limits talks about how Mr fugi was also trying to hide mewtwo and there was a team of rebels protecting mewtwo at the silph co and trying to prevent team rocket and Giovanni from trying to get it back. This also explains why professor oak was the real final boss of gen 1 but it was scrapped ww could catch mewtwo in the silph co after we got all 9 badges in Gen 1 mewtwo was no longer at Cerulean city instead it was moltres.

The basic reason you get items from missingno: When you encounter a pokemon, it sets a flag in memory that you've encountered it for your pokedex. When you encounter a missingno, the ID number associated with missingno is too big and is out of bounds of the pokedex, so it overflows and puts the flag into your item bag data by mistake. It just so happens that missingno's id is the same as the 128 digit in the 6th item slot. So seeing a missingno sets the flag, and thus the 128 digit, to 1, which is the same as adding 128 to that number if you have 126 items or less.( I think 127 is complicated, and ends up being 0 and/or the cancel button)

It’s also true why outside of Fuchsia city ditto was found there, believe it or not in the prototype version of gen 1 mewtwo was at one point kept in the ninja village in one of the buildings was locked and required the secret key same secret key found in the mansion, but once you get there the place is abandoned the machine is damaged the only thing left on the machine is a picture of mewtwo the Rockett’s theme plays you’ll find yourself now questioning who and what is going on, dr.fugi was trying to hide mewtwo and Giovanni was trying to find it.

Still such a cool location to visit, I've grown to appreciate it more now than I did has a kid. Interestingly, I had the reverse experience you mentioned: when I was younger, it was just a way to get the key to the gym and a few new mons, but in more recent playthroughs, I've really started to soak in the atmosphere and story implications. Ome subtle thing that deserves mention is Blaine having a picture of himself and Mr. Fuji, and the subtle realization that Fuji's dedication to caring for lost or abandoned Pokemon is his way to make up for all the no doubt less than ethical things he did as a researcher.

One of the leaked builds has a larger Cinnabar Island. It extends a little to the north and east, with a bit of long grass, and the mansion is surrounded by overgrowth. It looked cool, I don't know why they felt the need to simplify it so much.

Still imagine, that they made a small boring looking town still interesting, telling a story. As a kid I wanted to know more about the journals, I was invested and thought there is more to explore. There wasn't of course but still, there was dedication. In our first playthrough, we did not know what to expect. We had big dungeons before like silph co. It was disappointing though to realize at some point that there was not more in the building. In the end it was just good story telling, making the best of the limitations of the time. Games were different back then without the internet.

The Mansion has a lot of my favorites. Koffing, Grimer and Magmar are some Pokémon I love having in my team. They make me feel a bit as if I were a rogue Team Rocket member. And you’re so right! Immersion and letting your mind wander and fill in the gaps left by the older graphics is the thing these games do best. Main reason that gets me to replay them often.

Something to add is that starting with yellow, ditto were consistently featured in the lab. It really feels like the implicated here is that ditto were either products of the experiment going on in this place (possibly failed mew clones) or were being used to basically breed more mews, creating mewtwo. What I love about these games is the subtle subplot going on that they never really comment on in the open, leaving it for you to figure out (so much so that people will argue about weather this was even the intent). Dr. Fuji and Blaine are scientists who are trying to create the ultimate Pokemon, but their horrific experiment results in their test subjects escaping and destruction of their laboratory. Team Rocket, a group that collects rare Pokemon, learns of the existence of Mewtwo, after the destruction of the lab on Cinnabar. They tried to intimidate Dr. Fuji (who is living a life of isolation, attempting to make up for his past) for information about Mewtwo's whereabouts, and go as far as to kill a Marowak in order to draw Dr. Fuji out of hiding. Meanwhile, Team Rocket also takes over silph co. in order to steal a master ball so that they can catch Mewtwo one he's located.

You probably know this, but early Pokemon was always set in the real world... with obvious differences. Before the original games came out they released a manual or a booklet or something that's basically scientific research/journal of very recent discovery of strange supernatural creatures that started popping up all over the world, with Kanto being a hotbed of this activity. In universe this would probably be set 2 or 3 generations before Red and Green came out. Enough time where pokemon would be used(?) in ww2 and Prof Oak and Agatha would have been young to start their journeys.

It's clever, the hooves of ponyta must be from organic compound of wolfram. Ponyta Is extremophile and we know very hard organic compounds and organisms surviving in boiling water. Wolfram or Tungsten is extremelly hard and in contact with molten láva makes the láva freeze.

You can also encounter MissingNo. through the Trainer-Fly/Teleport glitch, commonly known as the Mew Glitch. I remember being shown how to encounter MissingNo. (and 'M) on the Cinnabar Island coast back in primary school, and using the glitch to get many Rare Candies and Master Balls.

I'd guess that the anime left out the mansion because they didn't want to get into the Mewtwo storyline yet. And maybe because they had already had a few episodes featuring mansions, like the Ditto episode and the one where Ash got a Haunter (which I believe was technically Pokemon Tower, but they made it look like a normal haunted mansion).

@@theconnected7234 I don't think that Mewtwo would have actually been around if they had let Ash visit the mansion at the time. They still would have saved that for the movie. They could have kept the journals or other signs of Mewtwo's recent escape, but like I said, that probably would have been getting too much into the Mewtwo story for them. Of course they could have just come up with some completely new and unrelated story for the mansion, but that probably wouldn't have been much more satisfying than just ignoring it like they did.

Various places in Africa, South/central america, canada, and mainland asia all have a lot of potential for an interesting region. Now, it has been a bit since I read the manga. Anyways, Tail Whip is an attacking move (as opposed to a status move that lowers defense). Arbok has 7 abilities before they even existed (Introduced in Gen 3). Trading is an in-universe form of evolution (that only Silver can do?). Gold can make ANY egg hatch in seconds upon contact and imprint his personality upon the baby pokemon. Pokedexes are extremely rare and getting one is a sign from God (metaphorically, not phrased that way) that you have super powers (Gold's hatching, Silver's ability to trade pokemon [Can't anyone?], Crystal's ability to catch pokemon [Which she worked for], Green's ability to steal [which she learned with Silver, so why isn't he that good?], Yellow's telepathy and empathy (Which is because she's born in Viridian, not genetic?), Ruby is the best battler and coordinator, Sapphire has animal senses from living in the woods, and I forget the rest). Substitute can be used to surf (Red's pikachu surfs via Substitute, along with being useful for long range combat and walking through walls). Now, for the extra fun stuff that might get the post hidden

The Elite Four are super terrorists. Lance nuked a city with Dragonite. Lorelei has straight up ice voodoo magic, but it functions on what she believes to be real (Lorelei cuts off Green's arm with magic, just for it to be revealed that Lorelei cut off the one fake limb made by a ditto, not her completely real arm that she was hiding in her shirt). Surge is a terrorist who kills kids and traffics pokemon. Oh yeah, Prof Oak entered the champion tournament (Like the Elite Four in the games/anime) explicitly to traumatize Green with an exclusively flying-type team (She has PTSD because she was kidnapped as a small child by a flying pokemon, and Oak somehow knew this) as punishment for stealing a pokedex, even though she saved the world from Team Rocket. After terrorizing her he forfeits his right to challenge for number 1, making the Red v Blue semi-finals the finals. Just to illustrate how Oak walked in only to hurt a young woman that he knew was kidnapped and indoctrinated by a terrorist. Speaking of which, Pryce from Johto is also a terrorist. He kidnapped children (Green, Silver, and others) and trained them to be soldiers and spies. Edit: Oh yeah, iirc Giovanni and Lance are both evil because they have the same powers as Yellow. Instead of abhorring violence because they understand the pokemon's pain, they went on to cause mass destruction to avenge them. That was Lance's huge overarching goal, killing all humans so that pokemon can live in peace. This also makes the "Viridian Power" weird. It's not genetic, otherwise Claire and Silver should have it. Instead it's randomly handed out based on if you're literally born in Viridian city. It's supposed to be rare, which maybe it is, but there's no requirement other than being physically born there. Also Giovanni killed a magmar? (I can't remember) that Blue defeated and refused to kill. It was making a mess of Giovanni's gym, Blue protected Giovanni (who's in disguise), and after Blue left Giovanni finished the job just because he could.

I don't know if it was ever confirmed or whether my younger self was just heavily influenced by the anime, but I always figured that the mansion was owned by Giovanni, it just kinda made sense to me given he's a crime boss that he would own some kind of villa or mansion. Along with it being mewtwo's origin point it goes quite well with Giovanni as well, also with Cinnabar's overall sleazy theme and being an island to the south of the mainland, it kind of makes it like the Sicily of Kanto.

Always took the dome fossil for Kabutops. Magmar is sick. The anime episode is an all timer. The manga is great; and to that point it's odd how the games, books, and tv shows all had slight differences going on. Sure it was early and different companies had rights and communication probably wasn't top priority, but it's so fun to look at the differences and be able to pick your favorite versions of events.

I love the computer in the Cinnabar Lab that mentions the three legendary birds as well as plans to explore a cave near Cerulean City in an attempt to locate them. It means that when a player finds Moltres in Victory Road they'd probably decide to go look for the other two if they haven't found them already. Plus it lampshading the location of Mewtwo is awesome.

Dr. Fuji became obsessed with reviving the dead probably for having lost someone he loved (why he now lives by the Lavender Tower). The existing lab on the island still revives/clones dead Pokémon, like the fossil Pokemon. Dr. Fuji was hired by Team Rocket to create Mewtwo as a Mew clone. Giovanni funded the research Dr. Fuji was doing. Blaine was part of the team of scientists. Dittos are the failed clones. Mewtwo broke away and burned down the mansion, so Blaine went back to the gym (and probably stays active in the other lab on the island) and Dr. Fuji abandoned his scientific pursuits to now become a peaceful man in Lavender Town. However, Giovanni wants him to finish the job and find Mewtwo, who Dr. Fuji created, so they chase him up the Pokémon Tower which is where you find him. Giovanni also sought the Masterball so he could use it to catch Mewtwo. It’s unclear why Mewtwo hid away in Cerulean Cave, however it’s possible that the strong and rare Pokemon which also live in the cave were Pokemon taken away from Team Rocket. They seem to be a random assortment of rare and strong Pokemon not naturally living in the region, so they seem related to either Team Rocket or Mewtwo’s residence in the cave.

New Pokemon named Mewtwo was born on Feb 6th to Mew... I was born on Feb 6th... I tried to ask my mom if she knew anything about this, but she teleported and completely disappeared then teleported home just appearing in the hallway, exaggeratingly stretching her arms and saying "whew.. im soooo tired, time to go to bed" and floated into her bedroom for the night... I have so many questions, but I don't want my mom to disappear like that again. My dad held up two spoons, one in each hand, when I was five and said he had to go to the store.. he disappeared in an instant and he still hasn't come home.. Maybe I should just forget about it.
