Dev D was never really about Paro and Dev's love but about man's relationship with alcohol. Sanjay Leela Bhansali twisted it to an extent to make it look like a romantic saga. It never was written as one originally. This movie did the original a true justice. Hats off.

Both women loved him but Devdas himself was a narcissist was incapable of reciprocating the love. It’s just a manual of what not to do in love.

You know there can be multiple interpretations of a book right? Devdas is originally a commentary on the influence of the caste system but except the 1955 adaptations, no other one went deep into it. Even DevD is more about toxic masculinity than about the alcoholism. The closest adaptation that shows the alcoholism is the 1936 version.

This has to be among the best music videos in Bollywood!! You can actually see Dev's state of mind as time progresses through the camera work. And the bit at 1:32, the state of mind of an alcoholic where he has forgotten about his surroundings, and is just indulged in the process of drinking. Also, the cutback to the dancers shows that the outside world is the same, it's only Dev who is under the influence. The scene with the water shows that he is trying to break through the influence, probably in guilt, but can't do anything about it. A masterpiece!!

GoW may be Kashyap's most famous work but DevD makes a much better case of Anurag's talent. The use of song to show the state of mind of actor, the revolving camera and the way it gathers pace, the quick cuts to create uneasiness in the viewer and the muffling of sound when Abhay Deol puts his head under water. The concept was brought by Abhay Deol and further decidedly developed as a reprise to Devdas by Anurag Kashyap. Deol doesn't lose his grip off the chatacter while AK creates a downfall as aesthetically as he can. Watching this today makes me feel these 2 must collaborate in the future
