Welcome to the CL Pet Ads where we will evaluate care shown in these ads and discuss with you the good and bad pet husbandry. We will bring up valuable points, what works for the pet, mention what could be improved and discuss a species needs. The focus in these videos will be about educating to encourage the viewer on learning more about the pet and to showcase #ThinkAdoptionFirst. Not everyone will bring their small companion to a shelter or rescue. Many choose to list still on Craigslist. There are hardly any rescues or foster homes for small pets like hamsters, so maybe you'd like to help out your small pet community after seeing this video? Who knows, maybe you'll make a different in the lives of pets and people.

Ugh I really don’t like the one that said “selling her other toys and this cute little thing” as it just sounded like they viewed the hamster as a toy and something that is easily disposable which is awful. And the fact that she’s getting rid of the hamster to get another toy and the parent are fine with that just shows lack of care and poor parenting to me. Great video as usual tho munchie 💕

That really seems so unreal to me, like something straight out of a sad animated movie-backstory. Why would they even say that?! I can only imagine they are planning to shame her someday...

Which is awful because the hamster isn’t a toy especially to sell them because you want to buy a toy. That parent was not teaching their child properly

I've never rescued a hammie off of craigslist, but I have rescued a rat. I got her for free with a prevue 528, a second tiny little cage, one hidey house, a bag of mystery lab blocks, and pine shavings. They waited to tell me that she bites and is "food aggressive" until after loading her in my car. They also dropped two more bombs on us: 1) she was housed with two boys who died "suddenly" and 2) they tried to feed her to a snake but she bit the snake and she was cared for by a 5 year old exclusively bc parents wanted nothing to do with it. Her cage, while an appropriate size, was absolutely disgusting and full of pantry bugs. Her water bottle had some sort of larvae growing in it. The bag of food had more bugs in it and the bedding had termites (!!) in it, so I trashed both of those as soon as I opened them. I couldn't handle her because she was absolutely terrified and lunged at anything near her, so I had to transfer her to a clean cage with her hidey house. I contacted a friend who is an ethical rat breeder and she told me to keep track of her weight for suspected pregnancy. She was so tiny and had to be less than two months old. She gained weight for a bit and was quite pear shaped, but then never gave birth, so we suspected she was so stressed she reabsorbed the litter. I eventually socialized her to tolerate me (dairy free yogurt is magical for teaching rats to lick and not bite) and introduced her to my own rats once we were sure she wasn't pregnant or sick. She absolutely blossomed and enjoyed running around the room during playtime, even began to accept pets and play with my hands. She lived with me for almost three years (a great age) before she passed due to suspected kidney failure.

I have several ethical rat breeders for friends. One of the most important things with rats is that they absolutely need a buddy. In fact, none of the ethical breeders here won't allow a single rat to go unless the person proves they have other rats. I have also learned there is a VERY fine line between people saying they are an ethical breeder and actually being one. I run one of the largest rat Facebook groups in my state. Believe me, I have seen some pretty messed up stuff by people claiming to be ethical.

Thank you Munchie's Place for putting together this video. I don't understand how grown adults will do TONS of research before they buy a car or even a pair of shoes, yet they buy a pet based on the whim of their child and then buy absolute garbage that is sold at a superstore or pet store. Later, when their child loses interest, they post photos on Craigslist or another site and ask for nearly as much money as they paid for the pet and the equipment. When I was a kid, my parent would not simply buy me something because I asked for it. We waited weeks and weeks and presented research to convince my parent to get us, say, a guinea pig. We checked out library books, talked to pet store staff, and got advice from friends who had one. Then, and only then, were we given a pet. Today, people are SO LUCKY that so much information is available online. Please, parents, do your research. And work up from the small stuff. If your child can consistently take care of a plant, then maybe allow him/her to walk a neighbor's dog or take care of their pet while supervised. If your child shows interest and is able to keep up with these kinds of responsibilities, then do your research and get a small pet with appropriate housing. Good luck, families. Pet ownership is SERIOUS business.

I'm watching this with the two baby rat boys I adopted recently. They both come from horrible animal hoarding cases, but they're the sweetest little weirdos and I hope introduction to my older guys will go well. My chaos potatoes are my babies, they might be small and don't live long, but they have huge personalities and so much love in their tiny hearts. Small pets deserve just as much care and respect as cats and dogs! The thought of selling a hamster like some used toy to buy a new doll is heartbreaking.

Aw, this is so sad 😢 I am soooo fortunate that my parents like my hamster (I got my current and first hanster Hermione when I was 11 and I am now 13) however even if I do say so myself I think I was pretty responsible and I improved my care rapidly 😊 My parents .ade it clear they would have nothing to do with my hamster, but they have fallen utterly over heels I love 😅 Keep up the great work Munchie, I love your channel!! 💖🐾

My parents previously owned 2 hamsters (at different times) back in the 90’s so the care wasn’t great and at first they didn’t understand why I needed to upgrade Frodo’s cage once I found out proper hamster care. I’m sad it took me so long to find out how to properly look after them but grateful my parents didn’t take long to convince them about proper care. And now they will point out bad care and want to help me help as many as I can and give my existing pets the best life possible, but like your parents mine have always made it clear that they are my responsibility to care and pay for (but they will contribute if/when needed) which is great!

Last week i bought two dwarf hamsters off of ebay, they both lived in horrible conditions and since i had empty enclosures i just had to get them. Before i bought them they lived in a small cage 40x30 cm which is about 16x12 inches big. They are about a year old so they lived like this for multiple months :( It was horrible, there was one platform and the family told me, that the hamsters were constantly fighting. So they just closed the opening to the platform and one of the two only lived on the wooden platform, which was soaked in urine with not one single piece of bedding and the other one lived in the bottom part of the cage. The only thing they had was a food bowl, water bottle one hide and a too small wheel. They didn‘t even have a sandbath. While one hamster had no bedding at all the other one just had the floor covered, so no chance of burrowing at all. One of the Hamsters has a teared ear so i suppose the other hamster bit him when they were fighting. Now i got both of them nice enclosures 120x60x60cm and the other one ist 120x100x60cm. I‘m so glad i could provide them both with a nice home, they both love burrowing and using their new wheels and the sprays.

12:06 What? Why would they sell their pet to save up for a doll. Clearly the kid sees the hamster as just another toy. Bad parenting. The kid needs to be taught it’s a living creature with a soul.

I had two chinese dwarf hamsters, Balin and Dwalin (in separate bin cages), and I read somewhere that when sizing your hamster and their wheel you wanted them to be able to run on that wheel without needing to bend their back, ended up getting 2 11" Niteangel wheels and they were barely big enough Not sure whether that's the right guideline, but they liked them well enough, can't imaging putting a syrian with something smaller than a 12"

Thank you for doing what you do Munchie! I have watched almost all your rescue videos over the years. I've owned several pet store hamsters in the past before I knew better about their orgins, but because of you I am now rescuing. I'm driving across my state this weekend to rescue a homeless gerbil in a neglectful situation and in an inappropriate set up. He was listed for free on Facebook marketplace. I know hardly nothing of his background. I'm nervous, but excited to give him a better life.

I use to have the tall cage with the purple base a loooong time ago, like early 2000’s long. I’m surprised they still have those around. Kept a Syrian in it. I really wish we had the proper care knowledge for these little guys back then. The hammy’s I have now are living in 700sqin+ enclosures and through those years of research have seen great improvement on their health, activity and longevity. Bigger is most certainly better for them 🐹

Had a very social and curious mail syrian hamster that I first had in Savic Hamster Heaven Metro extra-large hamster cage. Bought the largest cage I could find. short after I moved him to C&C 28'' deep 42'' wide and 18'' high. he had the largest wheel. lots of beddings. huts, and parts of it was about 8 inches to dig in. He died early this year of age. Everytime I read up if it is a dog , cat, hamster or what animal I will have next it does not matter. Thanks for the videos and the work you do rescuing pets in need

Imo tarantulas are lower maintenance than gardens... at least from my experience 😂 but most pets are certainly high maintenance! Jeez the girl selling her hamster for a doll is messed up, the parent shouldn't be allowing it. Like you got the hamster saying you'd take care of it. I think if she really can't take care of it anymore she should rehome it but not get any money (parent should pocket the rehoming fee ) since imo it teaches a bad lesson abt pets

Munchie I’m seeing some info that if you have a bigger ache and more bedding Ect that you can do a minimal cleaning. But what if you do t know their pee spots? And how do you clean them thoroughly enough if leaving extra bedding i their cage. Any way you could do an in-depth video on this?? 😬
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace Жыл бұрын
I think VR has done a video about this. But I no longer have large enough enclosures for this demonstration. My rescue is using prevues and 40 gallon tanks. The only way you'd truly know is if you see them doing it, have white bedding so you can spot the pee easily, or smell/observe the area to see if there's any poop sighting or ammonia smell. If you go digging for the pee spot since many use hides for their pee spots since it mimics their burrows underground.

If you live in a place with a higher minimum, that's wonderful because it means your cages that your country sell are suitable for burrowing. In America we still don't have access to the largest of cages yet, but we are getting there. Victoria, if you follow her, also says 6 inches is minimum with recommended being 10 inches. The community is still using 6 as a means to guide people not to go any lower. So it's not misinformation at this point, but preference and pet supplies that dictate the countries minimum.
