STORY TIME When i was 14-15 yeras old I told my school i was having problems with my step-dad. Then they send me to CPS bc they felt I need urgent help. They told me to call my mom and tell her where i was and why. I knew my mom wouldn't understand but they convinced me that my mom loves me and she would understand and help me. So i called my mom and she was mad asf. She was calling me selfish for doing something like this and ruined our family reputation. It depends on the situation. I feel like if my parents had done this for me, I would have avoided a lot of the shi* I had to deal with. There are some out there that think nothing can ever happen to them and are way too trusting on the internet. I can't tell you how many people I've met on the internet that were around my age or even younger at the time who were speaking to people they really _really_ should not be, and thinking it's perfectly fine and nothing bad is gonna happen. Sometimes the best thing to do is to scare them and show them that yes, things can happen. It really does depend on the kid and their behavior to choose the method. And at the same time, when you talk about punishing the children for meeting up with predators, it's the same thing as punishing them to teach them not to run out into the road if they continue to do so. If a kid does something dangerous and continuously does it, yeah, punishment is sometimes necessary to teach them. I have PTSD myself and I would still rather have hurt feelings and punishment than ending up in a situation that could lead to my death.

The trust issues they created made me more inclined to hide things from them, and because of it I have no record of the 20 year old I was chatting with grooming 16 year old me and convincing me to send him lewd photos. Those texts could've been evidence once I wised up to how gross that whole situation was, but I deleted them because I didn't want to get in trouble and have what little freedom I had taken away. Who knows how many people that guy's hurt in the 10 years since then. Could've been prevented had I been able to trust my parents enough to tell them about it.

the ONLY reason i could see this being reasonable is if: 1. this is something that shes done often and that theyve warned and talked to her about over and over again 2. shes under the age of 13 3. they didnt humiliate her on LIVE TV 4. they didn't confront her in an angry way (they shouldve sat down in the park instead and calmly asked her why she did it, actually listened, then tell her why its so important to be careful) i didnt see a lot of context so maybe some of these were there, but the last 2 definitely werent. scaring your kids as a means of punishment only teaches them that doing the wrong thing means theyre going to be absolutely terrified, not worth listening to, etc. and they will not be able to trust that they can come to you for anything.

I come from a generation when child abductions was quite common and the parts I lived in even had famous urban legends about child abductions (Cropsey). There were many things she did wrong along the way, the main one not being suspicious when her online teen friend didn't show up and sent an adult man "friend" to get her instead without notifying her, while texting that ahead is a non-issue to normal people. She shouldn't have gone, period. But she was like "ok sure". The rest are things we don't know for sure, like how much time passed or she agreed to meet someone after one day. Did they talk more, or she didn't suspect the guy offering to meet in a park by her house when he shouldn't have this information. Also meeting up with the intention of being taken photos of by s strange man is also somewhat suspicious... Even photographers usualy want to make you feel comfortable, it's a creepy suggestion, like maybe offer it later along the line... But that really is the smallest issue here. She followed and approached the van close enough to be forced inside even if she didn't go in. There are very important things that need to be taught there. This batshit crazy idea to catfish her is ain't it.... Even the opposite. public humiliation. Trauma. Trust issues with the parents. Not even given the right tools to deal with such situations. I think her parents just want to keep a leash on her throughout her life but if she goes to college changes are she will do a complete 360 most kids that we're heavily monitored or restricted or have parents who very clearly overreact and keep their kids sheltered, that kid will then be 10x worse in adulthood or in a college environment. It’s about the family being shown but it’s not for them, it’s for the people watching. If you want to be good at protecting yourself you have to know the moves that the enemy will use to attack. This is where the saying “the best defense is a better offense.” Because if you have a powerful offense then you won’t need defense. In this case self awareness is turned offensive(not aggressive). (In this case offense is anything that is pushed outward without prior attack, once attack comes then it becomes defense). Also I do know this because I have studied psychology especially in adolescence and with the basically chalking it up to an independence crisis in adolescence many children will seek out ways to break off from their parent’s protection but the parents never showed them how and they were never hurt by the situation before so they don’t know what it’s like to be “on the smoking end of the gun.”

As someone who grew up with parents who extremely sheltered me, limited my access to the internet and social media to the point I didn’t even have unsupervised access to any of it until I was 16, and was told my entire life that basically every stranger is gonna kidnap me, these parents just signed their daughter up for a lifetime of therapy and agoraphobia. I got to the point as an ADULT that I was too paranoid and anxious to go to the grocery store alone and need a service dog to go into public. It’s not fun crying and hyperventilating because you’ve been sick for days and are too afraid to go to the doctor’s office and be around strangers

At the time, I felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable having "the talk" with my parents.. but looking back, I'm thankful that my parents weren't unstable and incapable of raising me and teaching me valuable lessons

kairimun1988 no I don’t think that way anymore, that was when I was around 10 I’m a decade older now lmao. My point was just that a lot of kids seem to become so used to technology that it’s becoming the norm for talking and messaging to become separate entities, when they really aren’t. Also ty, it’s a truthful name too lol. It’s a shame that manipulation is so common on here though, it ends up ruining not just the victims but people detached from it suffer from the knowledge of it being possible as well.

The why of their decision makes sense, they want to have the stranger danger talk with their teen, but the how of their decision is the major issue, these people are either insane or were paid a ton of money. When the daughter moves out, hopefully she can move on with therapy, I wouldn't be surprised if she cut contact with her parents after they humiliated her like this on tv.
