This is the natural progression of how stories unfold. Information will keep trickling out until we eventually have the full scope of what happened. The young man's parents obviously were seeing signs of a problem, but they are probably still in shock about how serious the problem was. Young people have access to so much more content than back in the day. I wish that, at least, the adults in the room would be cognizant that young people are watching and listening to what we say and do.

Or better yet, if your child was gone and when you start making calls they don't answer and the place you expected them to be at says they're not there, would you fake your concern? This is a genuine valid question, because I would imagine of someone was to say "my parent's didn't do that" then my response would be those are your parents.
