Exactly. I should of kicked her to the curb long ago but gave her the benefit. She chose to distance herself so her actions come back to bite her. I understand and SUPPORT the OP's actions all the way. I've been in his place and know what it feels like. I had a younger brother. And just like this OP, the parents favored him over me every single damn time. They even took out a massive loan to buy HIM a house. They CLAIMED he was expected to pay them back but I know if he was still alive, he would never pay back a penny. He also swindled me out of my car after they both yelled and cussed at me over it. He ruined the engine and transmission in only a year and said it was crap. Uh uh, I took care of it and poured 55,000 miles on it without a single hiccup. My brother was just like Cole: thinks he's a god and above everyone, especially me. He couldn't even do a simple oil change and bragged that the TRAINED/LICENSED dealer mechanics didn't know what they were doing. To make a long story short, a simple oil change resulted in the car being towed. I found out he ruined the oil system to the point the oil tank had to be removed and rebored! That is not cheap to do. He used the wrong tools and I think it was because he used Imperial sized which is in inches. I warned him that it was a European brand and they would require wrenches/sockets that were in mm. I guess he damaged the bolts trying to remove them. I think he was also mentally ill and his paranoia resulted in him having an accident that killed him. I still miss him sometimes but not as much as I thought. I guess it's because he treated me badly and was always talking to me like I was something to be stepped on. He kept my parents on his side by getting involved with a nasty, TOXIC woman and had two kids with her. Of course, they divorced. I knew their marriage couldn't work and saw the divorce coming a long time ago.

I just don't understand how parents always show favoritism not only that but they're so blindsided that they don't care what they said about their child's Behavior they just care about their selfish goals and look how they end up now homeless and debt. Because if they notice it they have to acknowledge the elephant in the room: That they failed as parents. SO it's easier on them to blame everyone and anyone for the problems rather than their golden child. Besides, they figure that they have so beaten down the other child or children that they will always have a fall back plan. After all, THEY are the parents and must be obeyed. Their egos get in the way of their lives......

The main villain is Cole. He was lazy and so full of himself. The parents were naive - truth be told, delusional and star-struck - about the money that would accrue to them through their son's 'talent.' The parents had several opportunities to step back an evaluate the contributions they made to Cole. OP tried to bring reason into the situation, but the favourite child always won the day. OP had NO obligation to his parents as they would likely find a way to siphon off money for their irresponsible son. I feel badly for OP, but am very pleased he has a partner who takes his part.

Part of the problem with the parents is that they initially invested their business proceeds with Cole and the only way for them to recoup all of the money they gave him was for Cole to succeed. And the only way for Cole to succeed was to keep pouring money into his music career. Its like going to Vegas and losing money and then betting more money to recoup what you originally lost. It rarely works. Of course, there was the element that Cole was the golden child. Ironically, the parents thought putting more money into the bakery didn't make sense because they assumed they were going to lose it and therefore they thought selling it would be better

Also sometimes the one who you pour all resources to don't care about you, while the one who got neglected does. My stepmother learned that real quick. My brother who she really did not care for calls her Louise not mom, stepmother my sister called her Louise I used to be only one called her mom now she is dead to me. She only helps when it benefits her. My MIL IS A BETTER MOTHER THAN SHE WILL EVER BE.

This was a tough story to hear. All parties had faults. OP was clearly better off in most ways without the dead weight of family, but his p.o.v. also felt pretty biased. Seemed like there was definitely an air of jealousy there on his part. Younger bro was clearly entitled and the parents had no sense of justice, or economic calculus. At the end of the day, the family is fractured, and that is a loss for everyone. Sad story.

The biggest thing is that the making it big in the music industry is near the odds of getting the lottery or worse. Even if you pour a lot of money into gear, and other essential items then getting noticed by major labels which are very picky from the start. The parents should have known that fact but they decided to throw money into a cause that has a very high chance to fail. The fault is of the parents who enabled the kid brother and alienated the oldest to the point where he didn’t want anything to do with them, that’s untill they were homeless

I worked my arse off for a decade and finally got a minor deal, but by that point, it was time to settle down and grow up. I got out at the right time, and now I'm a successful university lecturer.
