The deaf need their own social educational environment. And not left to languish in public schools like Mexico.

The Salem-Keizer School District was foolish to close the DHH program as they seemingly didn't get input from the community first.

I'm concerned about these children's home districts being able to find interpreters. I work as an educational interpreter just a few hours from Salem. In my area all students attend their home districts, and every district is hard pressed to find interpreters. Many students either have to use virtual interpreters or simply go without. It is really unfortunate that the Salem-Kaiser School District's decision is going to negatively impact so many students access to education, access to services, and access to peers.

To clarify: In a centralized program, many DHH students take the same class/classes. Which means a few interpreters can serve many students. When all DHH go to their home districts they can't share interpreters. This contributes to the interpreter shortage, and leaves students without access.

Why are they not just going to the Deaf school? It seems like so many hearing parents send their kids to the local school trying to force them to be like hearing. It is sad.

The Deaf School is the best option. These parents who want kids in mainstream really need to do more research.

I went to my neighborhood public school, they’ll do just fine with an interpreter provided.
