Chess is not famous in Iran, but the same thing happens in all other sports as well. The dictator Regime in Iran does not allow people to play against Israeli participants. And if they did, they are going to be punished. Interestingly, Parham played against an Israeli player a cpl of years ago and was frowned upon. He claimed he didn't know the nationality of the player and almost got away with it, but the regime decided to stop players from participating in previous world rapid and blitz championship (as a punishment). This lead Alireza to play under flag and immigrate to France. The same thing happens in all other sports everyday. Many athletes leave Iran. 95% of people know the problem is the regime (some still criticize why the player left the country, but the majority still are fan). There is also the 5% supporter of the regime who do everything to troll Alireza and show him as enemy!

We are very proud of Alireza, and love him. It is a pity he is not playing for Iran, but the blame goes to the government, not him. He had to forfeit some of his matches, and on some occasions, Iran didn’t introduce representatives for some tournaments due to political reasons. All of these affected his potential, and I personally don’t blame him to move to another country.

Betrayer? He most certainly is NOT a "betrayer". He did it for his future and he literally had no other choice. If he hadn't, he wouldn't be world's 2nd, or soon-to-be first. Let's be honest. There is no future for Iranian chess players. They could have made at least 10 players in the world's top rankings but they're all forced to withdraw against Israel. Azerbaijan and Armenia have more players than Iran, a suspected origin of chess itself. I'm glad an Iranian is on the top 5, regardless of the flag he plays for.
