In case it wasn't clear by the footage, I've already done 3 playthroughs of this game. Most of the footage used is from my 3rd run. If the video failed to say how much I enjoy the game, that certainly should.
It's also worth mentioning, you can change your character skins and what wheels they ride. But I didn't like any of the alt colors. And changing wheels doesn't do anything, so I never bothered.
btw, I picked up the 2 DLC characters, mostly to support the devs for how awesome the game is. And those 2 are actually characters from Lethal League. That game already looked like JSR. So they fit perfectly. Weirdly, their names were changed. Not sure why, but they're still Switch and Jet to me!
Also, I like to think the taxi fast travel is a reference to Crazy Taxi, just to throw another dead Sega franchise a bone. It has to be intentional, right?

Something I felt was missing was the 'Professor K' effect. One of the things that really made JSR for me, as simple as it was, had been the broadcast transmission breaks between songs. It felt like you were really listening to a radio station, and it seriously added to the immersion.

Thats a fair point but I think since its made in the current day where people only really listen to radio in cars and not really out and about

I think the reason I wasn't missing him is because unlike JSR and JSRF, there's an actual worthwhile story being told in BRC. Which is infinitely more intriguing than JSR and JSRF's very surface level narrative.

I said the same thing. DJ Professor K added so much life to the world. Sometimes BRC can feel a little dead at times. Especially when you're just tagging spots and getting Rep. DPK was perfect for moments like this in JSRF.

the bmx, skateboard and roller blades actually have tiny gameplay differences with bmx being able to manual for the longest at the cost of ground speed, while rollerblades have faster groundspeed but shorter manuals. skateboard is somewhere in the middle. The difference is quite small many might not notice

I never played any of the JSR games and the whole 3d platformer genre is generally just WAAAY out of my wheelhouse, in fact nowadays I mainly play strategy and puzzle type games. But the music and the aesthetics in BRC's trailers really worked their magic on me so I decided to cautiously step out of my comfort zone and give it a go. So coming from this sort of background I'd like to give praise to the game for being super accessable for players like me - it took me a while to really *get it* at certain places I kept getting stuck at but the challenges never felt unreachable or overwhelming. I also really appreciate the open-ended nature of its levels where most of the content is pretty much optional - you go to an area, familiarize yourself with the layout while getting enough rep to move the story along and then you can just move on to the next area or stay and explore a little more if you feel like it. That goes a long way in letting the player modulate the level of challenge they are looking to get from the game depending on their preferences and skill level. Also I really dig the way you were able to make these really precise and specific criticisms of a game most people seem to agree is generally excellent. I feel like BRC is kind of the definition of a "flawed masterpiece", works like this are always super interesting from a critical standpoint.

Fun to hear someone mirror my thoughts on it being a fantastic _platformer,_ because I was doubting myself a little. I never really associated jet set radio or hover or Mirror's Edge with other platformers for some reason, but I'm not sure what exactly the dividing line is. You comment on it pretty early but I absolutely loved how precise the controls were, and that auto rail-grind was super well tuned... It was snappy enough to be helpful but not at all restricting, so you never had to worry about it getting in the way of your movement, something I heard happened a lot in the jet set radio games. I remember being really impressed in the first level when I realised, on those little overpasses, you could hop from one rail to the footpath, slide or manual and then hop back onto either side rail you wanted... They really nailed it. I pretty much NEVER felt like it wrested control away from me. I feel like the real fun of platforming in this game is the pathfinding, coming up with cool "lines" as you put it through the level, all while keeping the combos flowing-cause there really isn't enough complexity to make the whole game about tricks like a Tony Hawk, but it does look and feel wicked to do them. ...and the pathfinding you get up to later in this game, like especially on PYRAMID ISLAND, felt so incredible! That level is so well designed, probably my fave in the game. That was when I realised how to do boost-tricks, and so I'd see some far off rail, not sure if I'd be able to make it, boost trick half way across the map it felt like, actually land on THAT rail, (and this kept happening, if it looks doable it probably is!) keeping my combo going the whole time, hopping off that rail into a slide down some stairs to keep my speed up, into a flip onto some other rail UGH god I love it so much

JSR is one of my favorite games of all-time, but it is very hard to go back to due to the camera/controls--it makes up for a lot with its charm and style though and nostalgia for me. JSRF keeps the charm and style, but definitely fixes a lot of the control issues. Having said all that, BRC is the Jet Set formula perfected and it's hard to not suggest it first if you've never played any of the others.

I like that the game looks a little more forgiving than the Jet Set Radio games. There were several moments in the footage you showed where your character just barely landed on a ledge, which would have killed all your momentum in JSRF, but you just kept going. Or where you smacked into a wall, which would have killed your combo in JSRF, but you were able to continue. It's like the game gives you a break instead of busting your balls for not being perfect. I'm excited to try a game that's even more chill to explore than JSRF.
@landfillao4193
@landfillao4193 Жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed this game (18.4hrs on Steam) but I can't say it's surpassed JSRF. The 2 big reasons for me personally are that I find the police system annoying (same for JSR for the record. But this is more personal taste I suppose) and most of all the level design in JSRF is leaps and bounds better. There were clearly areas that were directly pulled from JSRF like Pyramid Park but it just didn't hold up to the Skycraper District that inspired it, 99th Street, the Rollercoaster level etc. JSRF set the bar REALLY high for level design. I also didn't like that there was essentially no reason to change characters since they didn't have any different stats. In JSRF if I knew I'd be getting into a race I'd grab Gum. If I knew combat was coming I'd grab Combo. But really there was no reason to use any different characters unless you needed a bike for 1 tiny section or a board to access one area. There's also a lot of QoL things that need to be sorted out (changing characters/movement styles is cumbersome, the map doesn't tell you which exit points lead to which areas etc.) Overall I really enjoyed the game and recommend it to any JSR fans, no doubt. But I just want a new JSR (preferably one like JSRF) even more now.
@bugjams
@bugjams Жыл бұрын
Actually I like the characters don't have different stats. Let's you choose whoever you want and know you'll perform the same. With giving characters stats, some characters would inevitably be worse at some things than others, so if you really wanted to play as _x_ character but the level/challenge required _y,_ you'd be forced to switch or feel weaker in that area which would kinda suck.

Man, your gameplay was an absolute _treat_ to watch, too! You're way more generous with that boost meter than I am, and some of the sequence breaks you've worked out are excellent. Tagger's tag could've been _sick_ here, because it could lean on the breakdancing combat to set up that launch-into-finisher. I had a few perspective problems with the Ch4 dream sequence and the final boss, but all in all this game was an absolute joy. Probably gonna jump back in and see if I can get as fluid as you :P Because it really is such a lovely space to just _hang out and move in._

I know exactly how to fix the traversal types not being different from each other- give them unique boosts Currently they all just share the same on-foot boost animation and functionality, so there's a lot of room for distinction in both utility and control there Like, with parkour it could work mostly the same, but also allow you to clamber vertically up walls for a bit, or bike boosts could make you go faster if you rhythmically press the button like you were pedaling and give you longer boost trick manual extensions
@bugjams
@bugjams Жыл бұрын
The different movement types actually do have slight differences. Bikes have the longest manuals, but are worse at air maneuvering. Skates are the reverse - shortest manual (aside from on-foot), but best air control. Skateboards are in the middle. I mean, it's still not much, I'll give you that. But there are _some_ differences.

Reminds me a bit of what the No Straight Roads developer Metronomik did in the lead-up to releasing the Encore Edition of the game. There was an event where people could send in pieces of fan art that would be placed around the game world as graffiti, which could be found and then put on a guitar-shaped HUD piece as the print of the guitar case. All credited, of course. Was a really cool event and simply an awesome thing to put in an Enhanced Edition of a game like that, especially with NSR being a debut game of the studio as a whole.

I will say regarding some comments on the easiness of the game, there definitely is a learning curve for new players, I felt like I got to experience going from being novice to expert at moving through the world, it figures that the game possibly was a lot more flatly easy for someone who has experienced the JSR games and movement style. This is heavily neat that this video has done a deep dive into this title. All the enhancements that was improved upon the original two entries and an acceptable story mode. The small nit picks are justified such as the removal of the tag system and the over use of the point / trick system. However this is a title made with love of the original series, that many fans of that title will heavily enjoy.

A couple subtle things about the BMX, skateboard, Skates and freerunning Free running has the slowest speed but is extremely responsive, you can stop on a dime and have a very small turning curcle, you can also slide infinitely on certain ground Skates your turning curcle is slightly wider but with extra speed, it's manual is the shortest of the lot and hardest to keep going for long, also stopping is really hard on them, but they are also very responsive Skateboard have a wider turning curcle and a medium length manual, but aren't as responsive as Skates, the tricks also seem to take a little longer, but not by much BMX is the slowest (other than free running) it has a very long manual and you can do it for multiple seconds, it's tricks are also a lot slower than skateboarding, it also feels a lot more weighted than the other transport methods. That's what I've noticed at least

one thing is that one if the actual difference between the 3 movement types is the manual times. the rollerblade's cess slide is the shortest, and the bmx's manual is the longest maybe not too noticeable during normal regular degular gameplay, but for keeping combos for a long amount of time, it starts to become apparent

My only question after watching this video, is have you found the sarcophagus? Also coil was the only unlockable who gave me some difficulty to learn, and demon theory really gave me some struggles for that high score as team BRC. But then doing it as the score attack was fun to struggle with, learning the nuances of how to prolong my score multiplier. Yet the Frank's were the one who made me suffer as my last unlock next to futurism.

Really? The key for beating the Frank's is just utilizing the whole map imo. All about that multiplier!

I definitely wouldn't say that it's better than JSRF but BRC was a lot of fun.

This game looked really cool when I first saw it but I wasn't really sure if the gameplay would be my cup of tea. (The way you described JSR and JSRF certainly didn't sound like games I would actually enjoy playing) Bomb Rush, on the other hand, sounds awesome from what you've described. I'll definitely give a try at some point. Also, on the topic of "fine, I'll do it myself" games, I'm still waiting for your Pizza Tower review lol It's absurd just how much that game improves on the Wario Land formula.

Agreed. The level design is the biggest thing for me. JSRF set a REALLY high bar with places like the Skyscraper District, Pharaoh Park, 99th street etc. I will say I thought the soundtrack was on par. I love this game's soundtrack.

I am kind of hoping they release a patch to fill in the game with more rails and ramps. Areas like the plaza in versum hill and the food court in the millennium Mall are WAY to big to be so empty.

I agree, and the entire world feels very bland to me in general. I think it’s because the art style is closer to JSR but the levels are much bigger like in JSRF. But JSRF had much more detail and complex lighting that didn’t leave those big areas feeling empty like this game does.

I absolutely loved this game everything I hoped and wanted and more. For the final mission being a combo thing each time I looked it as like helping me figure out the most optimal combo line for when I want to unlock the characters in the level and then later the combo achievement for each one. I’m glad I watched this I didn’t know the vert ramps increased the multipliers I feel like a foool now lol. And graffiti idk why I didn’t think to add them for the points in the combos

Hmmm i wouldnt say bomb Rush surpassed the original. I think it borrowed too much from the original, damn near down to the level design being direct copies of Radio Future. I know it's meant to be an homage to that but it didn't do enough original for me to consider it better. Also the music was good but something special was just missing, i really dont know what it is but the OG music just hits so much harder. Lastly the lack of a DJ professor K-esque voice over made most of the story cutscenes a pain to suffer through. That being said it is a very good nostalgia trip, i just dont think it's better than what sega managed to do in the first 2.

I agree with you except the missions, I think this was intentional so people would finish the game. if it was as difficult as postgame or if the lines to copy were too long people would just quit. I think leaving it to the post game was the smart decision so enthusiasts would get their challenges and casuals can just beat the game But I do agree there could be more challenges. I was surprised there was no mystery tape to unlock challenges or an arcade mode like you mentioned to do all graffiti with a crazy high score or doing specific movement challenges

I'm generally on the side of wanting indie devs to actually create something new instead of rehashing old ideas to appeal to memberberries and with the current indie game "meta" (and probably just lack of creativity), I doubt that's going to change any time soon. BUT that said, it's also just nice to see a new JSR game that's also genuinely good and not a hastily slapped together unity game that's only popular due to spite towards Sega.
@Pariah6950

I agree. But considering there is a vacancy of JSR games that needed to be filled, and that the originals never realized what they really wanted to be, this gets a pass.

@@Pariah6950 Totally fair. I think if you are going to be inspired off something you should push the design of the original to its fullest potential, which is why even though games like Spark and Pizza Tower also wear their inspiration on their sleeves, they're also genuinely great games on their own. I think my only real gripe with games like those is because they're inspired off already popular types of games, they're arguably going to garner more attention than more novel ideas (more so Pizza Tower since Frontiers already filled the 3D Sonic niche for a lot of people). There's still going to be plenty of great novel games that have their time in the limelight like Baba Is You and Teardown, but a part of me wonders how many other great games have gone completely unnoticed by people.

The game REALLY needs a hard mode, even as a mod. I still had enough fun with the game 100%ing it, but I couldn't help thinking just how much more it could be and how much more time I'd be willing to sink into it if it didn't try so hard to avoid any sort of punishment for the player. There's no real reason to have multiple types of tricks, because you don't lose the combo if you misjudge a trick while falling or whatever, at most you'll miss a score multiplier from not hitting a corner when grinding on a rail, but then you can just jump dash backwards to hit the corner anyway. Manuals are stupidly powerful on their own already, but the boost trick resetting the manual timer takes it to the absurd level and, as if that's not enough, it refunds almost all of the boost you spend on it! AND it gives you much higher score than normal tricks. Not only is getting a higher combo not making maintaing it harder (and, thus, actually rewarding), it actually makes it *easier* because you gain more boost from the tricks (which is a fine concept when it comes to racing, but, despite having a couple of really easy races, it's not a game about racing). I wish planning your route through the map was a thing at all for getting the combo up in general and not just for racing against the timer to clear the endgame score challenges for characters. High score counter is just meaningless when you know you can go anywhere and keep it up indefinitely until you do a misinput on accident (which doesn't really feel fair to me when it happens, even if it's technically my fault) or just fall asleep from boredom. One aspect that I actually found interesting is the fact that you can climb the stairs by boost tricking, as it can actually drop your combo if you're not careful. I think the Futurism challenge is intended to be cleared by going halfway through the Mataan "river" and then turning back, and you'll just clutch it that way if you do it naively, but instead I immediately dropped down the stairs, got the multipliers from rails there, then climbed back up and eventually ended up winning with half the time left. EDIT: Also, the game needs more obstacles like those bulls(?) that move back and forth over a bottomless pit and have twisty grind rails as horns, shit's really creative

the only thing i can think of for making the wheels a bit different is like, bikes are faster but jump worse, skates can jump higher, boards can jump further- -but then that would just be annoying because now not only are you running back to dance squares to change to skates or bikes or boards just for the glass floors, doors and hydrants but whatever other differences they have

It's very minor, but I have noticed a few differences in how the different traversal options work. Like I've noticed that you can't ride the skateboard down stairs, while the bike and I think skates can. Other differences I'm less sure on, could just be the different animations making it feel different, but I've noticed stuff like the bike feels faster without any combo to build up some momentum.

fyi, the movestyles, (skates, bmx, and board), actually do have differences in playstyle. the skates have considerably less "manual" (cass slide for skates) time, distance, and speed compared to the other two.

I enjoyed the combat in BRC more than I did in spider-man 2 and I am NOT kidding. And the movement is on par with the spider-man one (and if you factor in the movement+ mod it's straight up even more fun in BRC).

This game is awesome but for me cutscene presentation was the biggest problem. The lack of voice acting, the frequent silence, the lack of a score (instead just using the standard soundtrack which doesn't always work well) and the fact characters never emote. It makes an otherwise interesting story feel stiff and awkward in its delivery. I think this was a stylistic choice, but it was a bad one imo. I'm already not a fan of games not having voice acting in cutscenes, but at least have characters emote, and not stand there stone faced, in complete silence. Also the soundtrack, while really good, is too short and becomes super repetitive after a while. Had to turn it off eventually. Lastly, I think characters could've used some differences. Them all having the same tricks makes them too similar. Like, I haven't unlocked ANY other characters besides the main ones, because they simply don't add much besides basically a skin.
