They look like a toy called a diabolo or Chinese yo-yo. They were popular in the 19th Century. The tin-can things would have been two cones connected by a rod. The idea was to use the string to get the cone thing spi nning and thus stable.

The quality of film restoration is so eerily brilliant now. I even imagine crazy nonsense like a 2-way ‘time machine’ movie screen projecting a scene like above that you interact with to enable you to walk in and out of. We just dial in the date and place, we see a picture of that and walk into that scene. On the other side they see a scene from our time or future/past and a figure stepping into their time and place, that’s you. Ok, the doctor is coming it’s time for my medication 😂
