These ceremonies always hold a special place in my heart as I'm a 3-time Special Olympics competitor and winner. (1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals.) To see a symbol of peace lit among the ruins of Ancient Olympia is a reminder that the world comes together every two years and that a world no longer divided by conflict is still possible! And for the gentleman who commented on "whatever that device is" it is a parabolic mirror where normally (given enough sunlight) the torch is held into and lit by the rays of the sun.

This makes me cry. This ancient honourable event is being trashed with American celebrities and circus freaks. It’s just sad. They should have kept the Olympics at the original ancient site. It’s losing all it’s purpose. Keep it in Greece all the time! Every time!
@EtienneLegall5 ай бұрын
To whoever may read that comment, apologies for the serious tone of this comment, but if you happened to have plan to come to Paris for those Olympics, please just change it, choose another destination. France is currently ruled by a totally corrupted and authentically autocratic, totalitarian regime. Democracy has fallen here. Individual freedoms are increasingly threatened. If you love France and want to help the French people, then just boycott the event so that it can be turned into a major failure for Macron and his minions in the face of the world. Please be also aware that the people who make up this regime are truly incompetent, with the mainstream media constantly covering up their blunders. For several years this incompetence has lead to an increase in violent crime in the country. It's really worrying that these people could be entrusted with the organization of such an event.

Is anyone being forbidden from the games? I hope that is the case. Two countries at minimum should be on that list.
@suicidalbanananana8 ай бұрын
In the past they have been allowed to participate without their flag or anthem, this is most likely the case again. Even tho (especially with one of the two) we like to put some blame on the civilians of a country, fact is they don't run their country and just wanna compete in sports, as long as they are not allowed to "advertise" their country then that's honestly fine. It's better to include them so at the very least those athletes and some of their viewers will go "oh hey, maybe they're not evil like my gov has been telling me all this time" then to deny them entry and give their government more bs stories to spin/those people more reasons to hate us all 😉 *Edit: Looked it up, can confirm, they are allowed as "neutral athletes" if they behave, if they start trying to push their governments narrative then they will be told to leave/disqualified, nobody from their gov(s) will be invited either (but technically they can show up if they don't wear colors i think?) and there are apparently 11 of them in total*
