In America, we’ve atomized different ages, ethnicities, identity groups, into rigid demographics - probably evolving from having the world’s most effective mass marketing. It would’ve started with selling corporate consumer products, but it’s bled into politics (corralling everyone into dumb party team games), training us in a common national mythology, setting up our parochial triggers, and inculcating behavioral rules (that’ll be enforced by cops), etc. The atomization into demographics has come to define everyone’s social expectations; who hangs with who, where we feel it’s okay to go, what other people or places we’re comfortable being interested in, even what interactions happen and seem normal. Maybe that’s why Paris has the vibe these guys are talking about versus NYC and US cities?
