They used hand-held computers mounted on the handle bar. At 22:42, Fabrizio Meoni was furious about his broken computer. (RIP Fabrizio - Died: January 11, 2005, Kiffa, Mauritania, during a Dakar race).

@@tairus0139 rip to those mighty legends who dared dakar without navigation they literally rode blind and chasing the tracks of cars and trucks. Hatss off to them. Thanks for ur reply i use to watch these races as a child, now the bike riders have digital road book, and panic button, a rfid tag which tells them approaching vehicle nearby. The technology has come so far, but nowadays dakar official do not cover malle moto riders properly for me they are the real hero's who dared the mighty sahara desert. Thanks for the reply.
