Japanese wrestlers were very happy to be there, not stressed at all, they were enjoying the moment. Even if they lost, they were still happy. I think it explains their success. Just having fun, relaxed, and do what they know. Japanese judoka were very serious, almost no emotion, other than getting crazy if losing. You could see they were very stressed. Same for american wrestlers by the way, too much stress, so american wrestler underperformed.

RE: 57 kg - Gold, Silver and one of the Bronzes were all essentially Japanese. As mentioned, Deguchi and Huh were all brought up thru the Japanese judo system. So despite a poor showing for the Japanese women on paper with 1 gold, 1 bronze, you could add Deguchi and Huh, Sone was also injured and had to withdraw from her repechage match.

The difference between Japanese Americans and Japanese. On the Japanese threads they are all about how the Judo in international competitions isn't real judo. That Japanese judo is different and foreigners can't understand real judo. They even make a distinction by writing judo and 柔道. Some claimed that the French cheated. The reality is that in Japan judo is an elite "heritage" sport while in France that's a popular sport practiced everywhere and in all social classes. Many Japanese were also more objective and talked about the fact that despite Japan having twice the population of France, there are 4 or 5 more people practicing judo in France.

Deguchi is a fine enough judoka, but honestly she needs to add something other than just ashi waza. I rarely see her do any hip, arm or newaza techniques. Watching her gold medal match was frustrating as it was obvious the Korean was already expecting everything Deguchi could throw at her and it all came down to who could get more sloppy attacks in to force a shido on the other.

The GOAT!

Cool stuff Shintaro!! If you knew Portuguese you could watch practically all fights on SporTV with a narration full of emotion. I watched pretty much all fights and felt most fights were decided on SHIDO Nathan than actual throwing, which didn´t happen when I practiced judo as a child, when there was clear koka, yuko, wazaari and ippon and wonder why this system doesn´t come back. At that time people really wanted to show their judo and throw their opponent. Seeing Abe Uta cry desperately reminded me that the judo mindset is GET GOLD OR DON´T GET BACK, but anyone seriously doing judo knows that we eventually lost and Uta should be ready to know that. Looking at some fights I had the impression the referees were giving preference to French athletes such as the team match when Hifumi Abe fought and his opponent didn´t get SHIDO even though he wasn't attacking even HALF of what Hifumi was doing. I felt the same when Teddy fought Saito and Teddy wasn´t attacking that much in the first fight but didn´t get shido either. I didn´t know Mimi Huh was a 在日韓国人, but I knew a Korean guy who got the Japanese nationality and competed for Japan in Tae Kwondo in the Tokyo olympics. This was the second olympics that I watched after deciding to get back to judo 31 years after having stopped after watching the Tokyo olympics. I was a purple belt back in Brazil when I stopped, but finally got my black belt here in Japan.
