Welcome to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s top tourist destination. 2,000 square kilometers of near-pristine nature that’s home to 600 bird species and 95 mammals. But behind the safaris here, there are hard truths. In October 2023, our reporter Ashoka Mukpo came to investigate human-wildlife conflict, but he heard allegations of abuse and extrajudicial killings by rangers.

So now we're supposed to be crying for the poachers? What a joke, my hats off to the rangers!

You sound as stupid as the rangers. You think killing humans is better than killing those animals. You keep these animals for the white man to come and look or kill because these days they pay to kill big game animals if you didn’t know. Africans what’s wrong with you?

The results speak for themselves, when poacher's are given a zero tolerence attitude, poaching goes down and animals thrive. If these rangers dont act, then whats the point in them being there, if them, no one.

It's difficult to explain but rangers have lost life as well. They are only being cautious because poachers too will kill you. I am working with the wildlife forensics lab of UWA, and very often rangers die in line of duty.

Residing in Uganda, I find it noteworthy that such matters seldom receive coverage. This is the first instance of my encountering such information, suggesting that it largely escapes public scrutiny.

Human-wildlife conflict has cost us many of these animals, especially the big cats. The rangers may have no choice but to take the life of poachers because they(poachers) are well armed and also ruthless. It's a two-way street. Though we have also had success in arresting these poachers without taking their lives. Bless up UWA rangers.

But do you know who is killing the big cats?? The white man now is paying big bucks to shoot and kill the big animals. The Richest are killing these animals too.

The big problem is senstization on how those communities can co- exist with the wild life. We have seen patks that have co-existed with comunities. The problem is bigger thsn you see.

what the report does not state is that more often than not, poachers are armed with advanced weapons. It is the reason the government armed the game rangers. What the rangers did not tell you, was that the instability in Congo has also caused the government to put men of war in the game parks to deter armed rebel groups from Congo from coming to the Ugandan side to kill animals for food and trade.

Animal rights > Poachers rights. Biased reporting! You did not even bother to interview the animals to give us their response on how they are feeling about the dead and injured poachers, who murdered their comrades illegally, while trespassing in a protected wild park.

The problem is most law enforcement agencies in Africa, their officers are mad with power and act like mob bosses doing whatever they like. This is a real problem, the wildlife can be protected without this type of abuse.

@sivad7631 They don't only kill armed poachers. The problem of rangers is deeper than we discus it right now. No one know the deeper truth except those who have taken a deeper investigative methods to know the truth.

Mixed feelings about this video. Have you heard a phrase “pink glasses”? You probably wear such ones if you think there is a piece and prosperity between locals and poachers in such biodiversity-rich places with low income of the local population.
