Nice job. I just restored an American Scale Red Seal vise that had been rusted into an immovable mass. My dad bought it rusted solid 40 years ago, and never restored it before he passed 20 some years ago. After seeing Adam booth restore a vise on youtube, I figured it was time to honor dad and finish his project. I used a grey hammertone. It took 10 days of penetrating oil to break down the rust enough to start movement... and then hours in the glass bead cabinet to clean up the rust after getting it apart. It could use new jaw pads, but otherwise it works like new.

Great score with this vise Lyle! I watched part ! and thought, well he´ll mill the bottom piece in part 2. Ended up quite disappointed. That bottom piece cannot go without milling it flat!! I´ll be anxiously waiting for the part 3 of video series My best wishes from Argentina.

I am so glad you did the one thing I see so many guys not do and this is you used a primer and then two coats of paint. It's getting to the point no one seems to care about the finish. I'd have highlighted the letters, but that's just me. Although, I'd have replaced that handle with a new one and I'd have cut a "V" groove in the middle so the "V" shape in the set crew didn't booger up the handle any more, but here again, that's me. Great job!

cd rom I'm not suggesting that patina is for everyone. I just said I liked it. I have never had a problem with cleaning a vice. I just brush it off with a bench brush and sweep up the floor. If you are doing an actual restoration, then I think it should be returned to factory new condition.

Always enjoy your videos, regardless of topic. Many times, as a kid, I pinched my fingers when the handle dropped in my father's big bench vise. I think the screw head was mushroomed causing much pain. As an adult, on my vises, I always add an O ring to each end of the handle--no mushrooming, no pinched little fingers.

Thanks Mr. Pete. As I'm watching this, I looked to see that my main vice is a 4" Parker swivel that I mounted on a home made pedestal. It's very old. It came out of an 80 year old machine shop in Brooklyn N.Y. I got it in about 1990. The shop was around since 1910. Your vice looks so good, I think I want to clean up my Parker vice too.

I have a CP Vise that I use in my shop daily. It was my father in laws. Last week the stationary jaw broke at the casting. I am now beginning the repair. I have 6 vices in my shop but this one is special because it has family history. About 10 years ago I took it apart, cleaned it up and put it to use. I do not know what happened to the casting at the point of the break of the jaw because I have other vices and anvil type items to beat upon. I am going to repair this vise and use it again. My father in law Harry was a great guy.

I mount mine on a steel plate and use a couple of c-clamps to hold it to the table. Got 4 different types and different holes in the steel plate for mounting, and holes to go through the bench table for heavy duty work. Advantage is I can swing it to fit the job, and quickly remove it for storage under the table when I need the space.

I would have ground down the seam on the bottom to improve the flatness or, more likely put it on 2 separate rubber sheets that fit the base footprint. A vice that wobbles side to side as I tighten and untighten it would drive me bonkers.

Very disappointed that you did not mill or grind the high spot on the base Flat. I always put large rubber or Viton 'O' rings at each end of the handle to stop if from slaming down on your hand. Of course you have that fancy 'handle holder'.1/2" bolts fits the holes snugly. The buttress edge for the bench is a great feature.

Here you are with Chaz Parker vises all the way out in Illinois. And I live just 15 minutes away from Meriden Ct. Where Parker made those vises. And yet have an L. S. Starrett vise fascination. Currently owning three of them. The largest a 197# number 926. Of course only restoring the smallest so far. I'd say that vises are my vice but like Mr. Tom Lipton I also have a problem with hammers. And also like you, machinery.

Scrap iron? What!? Looks like a pretty-nice vise to me, even before you cleaned it up. Its "flaws" don't detract one bit from its utility, but they do add to its _soul_ -- the result of decades of hard purposeful service by workers who used it to put food on their families tables. I'm glad you restored some of its dignity.

I think that decorative design on the side of the vise is known as a "cupids bow" in the UK, often seen on old British woodworking hand planes . There is a plane maker called Bill Carter in England that still makes them that way, I think he has a couple of videos on youtube showing how does it .

1) It's a shame that the man that previously owned the vise had all the tools to restore the vise himself, but did not. B) If you look at the advertising art work at 11:18 you'll see that the bigwigs at Parker also liked the little "cove and bead" buttress in the rear of the vise as they added it as a detail to every letter in the Parker Vise logo.

Mr. Pete it looked like those old advertisements were in a book, If so I sure would like to know the name of the it. I always am interested in period advertisements. My grandfather bought two of those cheap vice's for the home shop in 1959. Guess what kind of vice's are being used in the home shop 60 years later. Three generations have been using them and still in good working order. Sorry I couldn't resist. 🙂

The pin that holds the nut in place is definitely an odd size, the reason it's bent is, when the vise was inatlly assembled, they just drove the pin in, then bent it over with a hammer if you noticed the bend matches the nut, at least it did with the Parker 974 i restored. Parker never dated their vises, if the handle is bulbed shaped, it was made in 30's and earlier. If it is round like yours, it's 30's to 1957. Parker moved from one area to another in 1957, which was reflected by the name in the casting being changed to reflect the new city in CT. So the 39 must be a batch number (39 was on my collar as well) my vise is the same year range as yours 30's to 1957. As you i like Parker vise's. My vise was missing the set screw in the handle, but the spring and a small brass disk were in the tapped hole, i just got a set slotted screw at Ace Hardware.

Perhaps this was said before but I'll bet that wear on the handle from bumping against the screw probably occurred over time when the screw and spring were lost. So perhaps Bubba didn't like the fact that the handle didn't make an audible clang with each operation. He often complains that the boss won't think he is getting anything done unless he hears him working.

Why it did and the design, even how to clean it. I assume KZbin blocked the comments. Not their sort of thing but hells bells someone has to do it and for a while it was me. It was a hell of a lot better than a pole axe much less a pith. Different times I suppose.

Is there any type of grease or oil that you recommend to stay away from if trying to freshen up an old vise? Red & Tacky, Lithium Grease, Synthetic/Super Lube? Or can you basically use just about anything?

Hey tubalcain i have a question. I’m about to mount a 100 pound wilton C2 bullet on my workbench. It is a 1.25” thick solid wood table top. Do i need a steel plate between the vise and table? Trying to avoid adding any more height than needed because its a big old vise!

I would say, try it without the plate. If it does not work out for you, add the plate and use the same bolt holes in the bench.

Force a rubber "O" ring over the ends of the bar so it doesn't impact the screw every time the bar is dropped on the screw.

@@mrpete222 thank ya mr pete. I have access to all of the media info with the tv, internet, & radio, yet i cant ever find any listings for auctions around me here in washington. Of course it would be the "old reliable" newspapers lol. Which i dont receive, haha. I'll definitely have to start picking some up. Do you know if they Are listed on a certain day of the week, like on fridays paper, or are they just listed on any day of the weeks newspaper?
