Always love when Bird looks of camera (presumably at the director or camera person) at 0:36 as if to say “so I laughed during a take. What do you want from me?”
@stevendreifach77373 ай бұрын
True, and in his defense it wasn't really a take either, more like an already comical situation in which they were pretending to play.

These are heros. They eat, sleep and breath music. So hip and witty. A totally different world. Sometimes the price is too high.

It was just the ridiculousness of the situation like “can you believe they’re making us do this?”

@@OGStazzy On this video, Parker & Hawkins (and everyone) had *already recorded the audio (the melody and solos) and THEN they recorded the video. So, they were essentially moving their fingers on their instruments (for the video) but the audio was being played so they could hear it. In other words, the video you see is Bird and them moving their fingers without any sound being recorded … and what *you are *hearing is the prerecorded audio that Bird and them are also hearing while they moved their fingers for the video ! So, Bird & Hawk (and everyone) were nervously giggling at having to pantomime (“mime”) their parts… they are being asked to “mime” (we would call this “lip sync” today even though they have instruments) but they are not laughing at each other to make fun of each other… they are laughing/giggling because they are nervous and “can’t believe that they’re being asked to “mime” their parts (when they easily could have played their parts for this video session)” There REASON that all this happened is described below 👇 This was a common practice then and still happens today. The original video was “Norman Granz Presents Improvisation” I will try to attach a screen shot of the “original” (re-released) cover. “The opening segment, from a session directed by the photographer Gjon Mili, pairs studio sessions featuring Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Bill Harris, Ella Fitzgerald, and Harry "Sweets" Edison (not necessarily all in the same performances) with footage videotaped in a studio that lacked proper soundproofing. It was an incredible challenge for musicians to attempt to pantomime along with their recorded performances, but with a few videotaped efforts and lots of editing, the final product is surprising. The king of the alto (Bird) joking around with the king of the tenor (Hawk) 🎷

This was "Ballade," the last solo in the Omnibook...I think from about 1950. I'm surprised by Parker's metallic mouthpiece at that stage of his career.

Now I know why Bird was laughing at Hawkins on this clip (seen it loads of times, but not this warm up clip). I thought Parker was being disrespectful, due to Bird being a more superior player, but now I know Coleman was trying to mime and getting it totally wrong. Brilliant...love the sniggering by both of them. I can finally lay that one to rest 🙂!!😄
