I love Parker Palmer...and Bernie Sanders is not an example of irrelevant idealism. Bernie is an activist for what he and many people believe in (getting money out of politics).

This interview has value, but is also problematic. The interviewer is really just a flatterer, doesn't show that he knows anything. Smugly calling Boston University "The Berkeley of the East" puts him into a cloying category. Bernie Sanders is not irrelevant, though he may be an idealist. I met him once, didn't like him, but he's the real deal , someone who advocates for what is really needed, obvious things that sane people can get behind. He leads by example, inspiring more people to get involved, just like Nelson Mandela did, and many, many more did before him. We do face some very dire circumstances. It can be depressing. Parker Palmer's approach is worthy. I lived in ashrams for years, gained tremendously from it. It is not pronounced ash - as in what's left after something burns, ram - as in ram it up your @#*. It's ash - as in Oshkosh, ram - as in Rahm Emanuel. Anyone involved in the meditative life knows this, so mispronouncing it on purpose is a form of disrespect, and age-old practice. One can engage in spiritual life and still be involved in trying to make things better. Trying small things is fine, but trying big things is fine too. We're here. We do what we can.
