As someone that wrestles with a spotty memory when it comes to books and what they contain, an aphorism I've come to love is this: 'I cannot remember the books I've read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.' -Ralph Waldo Emerson

One for example is “It’s easier to Stay Warm, then get Warm.” They aren’t deep as Gandalf is dishing out, but maybe I should be writing some of them out for future reflection.

While I enjoyed your readings from Lichtenburg, Pascal, La Rochefoucauld, and Cioran, I was most excited to hear your own aphorisms. I watched till the end just for that. While philosophers may be in their own class, the way of deep thought doesn't belong to any one class. Parker, you're making deep thinking accessible for people who would never dare dream they can be philosophical. Sharing your own writings, in some ways, was the most sage-like part of your video. Great stuff man.

@ParkerNotes Ah dude, glad to hear it encouraged you! Your video made me want to write and share aphorisms. Naturally a scolding voice came saying, "who are you to do that?". Then I remembered these words by Malcolm Guite. I think these words are a great humble reminder that we're not the inventors of truth, but we are choosers of the words we use to tell of truth. I hope they encourage you too. "Lord may I not so much find the right words as allow the right words to find me, not so much compose as allow you to compose me. And when the words come, Lord, help me to welcome them, to listen for their wisdom and to cherish and care for them."... " Let me learn from the wisdom of every word I use, for every word that comes to me is older and wiser than I am." (A Liturgy Before Writing)

the practice of forming aphorisms, much like the practice of creating within many constrained forms, develops skill in both concentrating an idea into a concise point and on the act of producing something. i have often fallen into taking notes and gathering information for the joy of doing so but never using it for anything. never producing anything. i started writing one sentence stories because a friend got me into a 30 days of flash fiction thing on twitter back around 2010. that really taught me how much i could learn through those types of activities. maybe it would be fun and a good learning experience to setup something like "an aphorism a day challenge" on bluesky or something like that. then do a review video of ones that really hit for you or the community. it'd be a chance for opt-in learning and community engagement.

At 8:51 you mention Gandolf and his aphorism about dissection of something kills it. Tolkien is more likely referring to the state of English studies and the rise of the "New Criticism" of I.A. Richards. Because that is effectively what the new criticism was; a dissection of the text. Sectioning off the Author, the work, and the reader into individual parts, instead of taking a work of literature as a whole.

I feel like my current journaling style is more like a Pippin style than a Gandalf style lmao. Inconsistent, random, colorful, emotional, blunt, funny and chaotic with a weirdly large amount of food descriptions. Bunch of happy ping pong brain entries, then suddenly a sad and wise entry but the entry after that has a printed meme on it. Yesterday I wrote that I saw a fat dog roll around in the snow on my way to school but didn't stop to write about my worsening work ethic and the massive conflict I'm trying to solve

@@ParkerNotes Sorry, I misread your reply. "Time Enough for Love" is a very different novel than Heinlein's earlier works, slower paced and more philosophical. It's basically the story of an old man (Lazarus Long) reminiscing about his life: what he did and the lessons he learned. If nothing else, just read the chapters titled "The Notebooks of Lazarus Long." That's where the aphorisms are.

I love using fountain pens for stationary writing (not something Id carry around in a pocket or try to use in a pocket notebook) because it just feels like you're playing the role of some wise man scribing down his thoughts and ideas. Plus, I have a slight addiction to the various inks you can get and theme to whatever work you're doing. Definitely had a few ink stains on my fingers over time and my workhorse is probably still my ballpoints, but there's just something about a fountain pen that brings a lot more enjoyment to what I'm doing

However, I think a couple of my favorites are: " It's not a delay to stop and sharpen the scythe", "A sword has a voice. Sheathed it has little to say, to be sure, but you need only put your hand on the hilt and it begins to whisper in your enemy's ear."(this one I only just found, and I think its less an aphorism, but still really good), "You can choose your actions, but you cannot choose their consequences"

I'd be surprised if no one else caught this, but your first aphorism reminded me of the following: “I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.” ― D.H. Lawrence, The Complete Poems of D.H. Lawrence

Not sure if this is an aphorism, but lately as I read the Bible I try to remember, “The New Testament is hidden in the old, and the old is revealed in the new.” Can’t remember were I heard it so don’t give me credit 😅

This is a great idea. I have my own. But it's a collection of quotes from stories, books and other places. We should have a collection of good words and write it in our own hand. The experience is a good thing. And like you said I felt weird and who am I to do this and cringey. I think I will get back to it. 🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️

I find, in general, that fiction writers are the foremost creators of aphorisms, as they need not care too much about the opinions of philosophical gatekeeping. Examples from Robin Hobb aka Margaret Astrid Lindholm Ogden: “The man who must brag for himself knows that no one else will.” “When you cut pieces out of the truth to avoid looking like a fool you end up looking like a moron instead.” So, a way to find the sage is to do so through story, or roleplay. Let someone else speak for you while you're swinging that pickaxe at the boulder of cringe blocking your path.

I've definitely found this too! Started a new KZbin channel on science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy in order to draw out truth and wisdom from speculative fiction, of which there is a ton 🙌

I was a failure at aphorisms, so I wrote some rules of wisdom. 1. Don't stick your finger in a light socket. 2. Come in out of the rain. 3. Don't bite people. That's as far as I got, but I have a journal to fill up and this is just the start.
