I like both but I love the Alpine. The Cayman is more practical but one point that everyone forgets to make when talking about day to day use is running costs. The alpine is much lighter which translates to lower consumption and less wear to the tyres and breaks. Also having smaller wheels means that it needs cheaper tyres. Add that to the fact that the top spec A110 costs as much as a sparsely spacced basic 718 and the choice is much easier for the Alpine.
@ParkersTV6 жыл бұрын
All valid points 👍 running costs are arguably less important in cars like this but totally still a consideration.

Sure that if he've just tested the 300HP Cayman he could have do a different choice! A110 Alpine (which is not a Renault like Lamborghini is not a VW) is so much more fun and faster than the Cayman 300 HP and not has much expensive even day after day, i'm sure that it'll be a great success with the people that prefer to spend their money with a really great car or just with a famous and comfortable car, definately ALPINE is back...

Everyone complains about Porsche being with a 4 cyl engine, but personally I like the 718 better than the previous version... why? Because it's faster, both on a straight line and on a track, the engine has more torque at low speeds (which makes the Caro more usable daily) and it has better running costs. It has a worse sound, but personally I find efficiency just as attractive as a good sound, if not more... I know I will be one of the few to think so, but I choose to be honest.

Well done to Alpine for making a real lightweight driver's car. It's a shame cars like this are a dying breed as Alfa have now stopped making the 4C, only Lotus and Alpine are left in the marketplace. Comments like "I never consider Porsche to be a true sports car" are comical and make you look silly, weight is important but not everything and Lotus agree with that as they make several cars heavier than the Cayman (which is not a heavy car). A sports car is more than just a single part of a whole equation, if all you cared about was weight you may as well buy a 2CV. The Cayman has one of the best manual gear boxes of any car on the planet, they Cayman has the best chassis's on the planet (including super cars) and the mid mounted engine with its low weight and very very low centre of gravity because it's flat (looking at you Lotus with your top heavy Toyota super charged V6) mean it's a better mid mounted sports car engine than anything else you've listed. I honestly think "I never consider Porsche to be true sports car" is the dumbest thing I've read on the internet in years.

GTS base price is around 70 000£, you can't really compare, and not having the option for a manual transmission was not a big deal when the Alfa 4C came out. Practicality inside the A110 is near 0 tho. Great review and beautifull filming, +1 sub

to be honest, if the Alpine had the option of a manual gearbox, i'd choose it even over the Cayman GT4, as it just looks spectacular and sounds great (for a 4cyl engine) and it looks like it's a lot of fun to drive (particularly "normal" twisty roads). it would easily be my "attainable dream car", and i say that as a huge Alfa Romeo and Porsche fanboy but all things considered, the lack of a manual in such a drivers car is absolutely inexcusable, and for a little more money than a Premiere Edition, i'd rather have a last gen flat6 Cayman S (or with a bit of luck and searching even a GT4), or a 997.GTS, as they're better cars in every single way except maintenance and fuel cost. or, hell, even a Lotus Exige, which is just as light and nimble, but it has a delightful V6 engine (sounds MUCH better), is much more powerful and has A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, like a driver focused car is supposed to it's absolutely insane there's no third pedal option in there (and please, spare me the "dsg is lighter" PR bullshit. it's not) they completely missed the point and the boat by aiming for Cayman sales, just like Alfa with the 4C. next to nobody who buys base Caymans because they're great drivers cars, most people buy them because of the badge and the perceived luxury, that's why they're mostly sold in auto form (unlike the bigger GT4 brother, which is even more of a driver's car...). the Alpine, like the 4C before it, can't compete with it in those segments, not even close. they should've aimed to be upmarket, midengined Miatas, 5-10k cheaper base prices and a manual option and both would've sold like hotcakes

Personally I love both cars. Porsche made a great choice using the 4 cyl engine because it gives the car more power at low speed. the base 718 Cayman is faster than the old Cayman S, better running costs. It has a worse sound but the engine is more usable at low speeds and in the end the 718 is a greater car than the previous in every aspect but the sound. Besides if Porsche survives it's thanks to downsizing and électrification. The Alpine is great. Super light, relatively cheap, fast, comfortable and with low running costs. The steering and the gearshift are not on Porsche level but the car is so light that it makes UP for it. Should Alpine give the car a différentiel autobloquant, more power and a sportier setup it could beat the base Cayman on a track and maybe reach the Cayman S. The thing is: Cayman will go on and it will get better at every génération because it's a Porsche. Will the future of the Alpine be as bright ? It depends on how successful it will be.
@darwinrover6 жыл бұрын
I want to like the Alpine, but they make it hard for you. Only 250hp when the same engine in the Megane RS is 275. And the wiper stalk and radio control stalk look exactly the same as the 2003 Clio I used to own.
@varmastiko29086 жыл бұрын
Do you think the Alpine needs to do zero to sixty in less than 4.5 secs? I don't. Hence no need for more power (the Megane does need it with the huge body it's hauling; hence it has more power). And what's wrong with the Clio wiper stalks? Parts sharing is a good thing - for reliability, for upkeep costs and for future parts availability.
@sixpotshot6 жыл бұрын
Sadly heel and toe will never be a problem in the Alpine...to me they got this lack of manual option completely wrong (albeit I know their marketing did the sums and this was the result either right or wrong...) which is a shame because chassis wise, technically the Alpine has got the Porsche licked albeit there is a price to pay in terms of boot's space. And this is not even talking about the weight...a field where Porsche slipped off the tracks for a while now. Maybe it is the price to pay for a better build but in my opinion it is just the price that their chosen luxury route has taken them into, completely detracting from what a sports car should weight and the fact that some Lotus Exige versions are nudging 1200Kg nowadays (who would thought!!! Heresy...) just shows how well did Alpine get this right. A really difficult choice in between a base PDK Cayman and an Alpine but whoever chooses the latter will have chosen the purer car. Me? The manual box available on the Cayman would make it a no-brainer and besides Alpine (like Lotus) has been too optimistic with its prices...first they need to re-build the brand, get some reputation and credit and then they can claim it back. But starting pair on prices with a brand as well established as Porsche's is difficult to stomach. And to match Porsche's network is another completely different task albeit my experience with them has got plenty of bad examples, unfortunately, to the point I would have trouble to recommend a OPC if someone was going to ask me...Lotus could have a much higher share of this market if it was not for their price optimism as well and countless versions of the same car. One last thing: it is a well known fact Alu is very difficult to repair once the damage on the chassis is past a certain point so something to bear in mind re the Alpine. PS to the reviewers: according to my experience pedal brake feel is variable (across their cars and range) and most OPC techs (they are not mechanics any more are they?...) get this wrong (in my case at least). However if you insist with them that you don't want any break pedal dead travel feel, at least some if not all techs, will do this for you. It is something I got tired from having to ask (when I should not) but if I ask likely I will get it

Alpine for people who want to have fun with a sport car and enjoy the art of cornering fun in all conditions. The Porsche is more suited to people who like to drive on freeways or wide roads, and who want to show off their social status.

Hey Parkers the new Audi A8 is better than an s class because in s class you will find a cheap bits of plastic in it's lower parts but in the Audi there is nothing cheaper in it and it's drive is also better than an s class of you people will try the A8 and an s class on highways in city I. Motorways and in all the A8 has dominated the s class and yeah in terms of interiors s class is slightly above than A8 in terms of design but the Audi's design is also very impressive it's very high tech it's virtual cockpit is brilliant in class and well yeah both cars are nice for me Audi, Mercedes, BMW I think you people should do again the review of both cars and what do you people like s class a8 or 7 series plzzzzz telllll meeee

They are both sports cars. So race them with the equaly horse powered engines.The Alpine is a true sports car. Much ligther than the Cayman. I would like to see them both competing in Top Gear. That would be fun.

I wouldn't take it too personally (assuming you are French). If Rover were still around, and British owned, and made a similar car, you'd get a similar remark. Porsche are just seen as a more prestigious brand.
@matthewschiebout73846 жыл бұрын
not even close, the Alpine is the real deal, especially considering it's considerably longer/more significant history. A road Porsche is a 911 and alway will be, except their SUV's these days, which bring home the $$ and sales volume.

I have a 987.2 Cayman 2.9 - I would certainly chose the Alpine over the 718 - In addition to my current car. And I think it does sound better than the 718.

The alpine should rather be compared to the Alfa 4C. Same mentality (weight vs power), same target audience and same pricing (roughly).

Won't disagree with you, but the Cayman is definitely the class benchmark.

That Cayman sounds like a Toyota GT86. Let it sink in for a while. A Porsche that sounds like an economy Toyota.

LOL ... 718gts (0 To 60) is 3.8
@kendradumitrache97355 жыл бұрын
Bad comparison. You cant take a top of the range GTS and go up against the Alpine. Loaded with all options the Alpine is 52k, the Porsche is 75-80k. The standard 2.0 liter Cayman should have been the one to start with and that has 300hp vs. the 365hp of the GTS. The long gear ratios of the Porsche are a bit of a bore. On most roads, that means it stays in 3rd gear most of the time and where's the fun in that? I will give you the point about the Alpine not being available with the manual however. With respect to engine sound, that's where you totally lost me. The new 718 sounds awful. They even had to revise the exhaust due to so many people disliking it and I think it still sounds terrible. The reference to the Subaru STI is warranted and those I think actually sound better. Porsche went off the deep end getting rid of the flat 6. My thoughts.

In reality, every Porsche on average gets 10K of customisations, and Porsche's menu for that in colours, materials, quality and choice does not exist anywhere else, even if you only look at the paint options, and then you have the resale value of a Porsche, so if you really had to make this decision in real life and not as a drooling comment on a KZbin video, then this isn't even a contest and the Porsche wins hands down.
@stephanelagresle46426 жыл бұрын
the resale value of the Premiere edition of the Alpine is sky high...
@abomala16076 жыл бұрын
You can resale Alpine much more than base price... no comparaison for this point Alpine win. In japan 1200 people apply to get a first edition Alpine.. only 25 avalaible....In France 2 years delay to get one... I let you imagine the price you can sell it if you have one.
@Baerchenization6 жыл бұрын
And what do the ones cost that anyone can buy, the ones we are obviously talking about here? Btw, a regular Boxster/Cayman can already cost tens of thousands more than a Limited Alpine, if you make the right choices when ticking the boxes for your order...
@varmastiko29086 жыл бұрын
Sports cars are meant to be driven, not sold. And when the time does come to sell it, you will still remember you paid 25k less for it in the first place...
@Baerchenization6 жыл бұрын
Who says Porsches are not being driven? It is absolutely a drivers car and that is what people do. You cannot compare storing away a limited edition GTx car with daily drivers like the Cayman or any 'regular' 911... And when it comes to sell it, right :) No, then you would not remember that you paid 25K more in the first place, because that would not be what would have happened in the first place. What would have happened is this: Alpine costs 48K Pounds (250 hp) Cayman (300 hp) 43K (manual) or 45K (PDK). So you can throw in another 5K in options (or 7K in case of the manual) and would arrive at the same price as the Alpine - pretending that it would cost 25K more is ridiculous ;) So they are very close in price, depending on your hunger for options, of course, and going from there, the Porsche will have a better resale price... And btw, it should be obvious what to do for all those people who bemoan the lack of a manual transmission here... *wink-wink* the Cayman has one... just sayin' ;) It happens to be an excellent manual, too.
@standandeliver83763 жыл бұрын
If it was my money, I'd have the Cayman. If it was someone else's money, I'd take the Alpine.
