“Parkinson’s is more than one disease and everybody responds differently to a disease”,
says Bena , 74 👍 She is one of the participants of Table Tennis 4 Brain Health programming at North Shore Table Tennis Club.
She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015 and over the time she became very shaky. Her life has changed drastically. She loves playing table tennis because it’s one of the activities that helps her forget when she shakes.
She found out about these classes from several people that are part of Parkinson’s support group through BC Parkinson’s Society.
She used to play tennis and bit of pickleball but she’s decided to give Table Tennis a try because she heard only great things about this initiative.
Bena encourages everybody to give it a try “it’s not that hard to learn a new activity and I play the best when my eyes are focussed on the ball”.
This is a great group in her eyes and everyone is very patient, forgiving and encouraging. Bena loves the dedication of all coaches, they are there to help everyone to get better or to get started to enjoy this Sport.
Lastly, Bena is part of Michael J. Fox foundation since 2015. She is part of the study that goes back to 2010 “Progressive Parkinson’s marker initiative”. She is regularly being monitored and tested for progression of her symptoms. She says there is a hope and expectations are high since the foundation announced breakthrough discovery “the Biomarkers” they are using now to determine how they might approach some treatments in Parkinson’s. We encourage everyone to see her video ⬇️
