The History of & Changes to The Haunted Mansion Holiday | Disneyland

What better way to kick off our inaugural month of "Spooktober" than with a video I started working on almost a year ago?!
In this video, I and the INFAMOUS Disney Dan will be going over the history and changes to Disneyland's seasonal overlay for the Haunted Mansion.

My parents and I really enjoy going on Haunted Mansion Holiday annually in October. Thanks for thinking of us even though we love the Hatbox Ghost. He's our favorite character and we really enjoy his lighting effects which are animations that everyone (not just the 3 of us alone) gets to observe when the Black Christmas Sleighs (Festive version of the Doombuggies) exit the attic.

Thematically that's kind of weird cause the attic is now 'hidden present' themed. Maybe Sally making/wrapping her gift for Jack (the picnic basket) or sewing stockings or something.

Absolutely. And the hatbox ghost could possible be replaced by either the top hat ghoul from the movie or the clown with the tear away face. I understand many people still want to see him and he’s still a fan favorite everyone wants to see but in a couple years they could do it.

A really interesting fact about the Nightmare Before Christmas decorations is that the vast majority of them are actually stored within the ride, and only the bigger pieces like the animatronics or exterior decorations are stored on an off property location. Many of the interior pieces are simply tucked away behind the main features, ie. in the attic, most of the Christmas additions are simply tucked underneath the tablecloths, or are painted on certain faces to simply blend in with the rest of the attic and can be turned around for the overlay. It is pretty impressive how they handle all of it.

That's crazy weird that they'd have so many animatronics - Jack, Sally, Oogie, the Giant Snake, etc. - for something that's only seasonal. And for WDW to reject 'em outright! Oh well; good for you Tokyo Disney. At any rate, it's all super impressive - looks and sounds awesome and practically feels like it's own Nightmare Before Christmas ride when all is said is done. Barry-Allen The-Flash The WDW version is superior to the DL version year round. Its a lot longer, updated, and has an interactive queue. Also some interactive features with the magic bands, a great shop and even a restaurant planned about it Since WDW receives mostly international visitors, changing this classic attraction for the season would mean foreign visitors who visit during Oct (and cant get back anytime soon) will miss the main version of the attraction. DL has the need to change a little every season, because most people who visit are locals

Yeah, I've been hearing that about WDW versions of things more and more in general these days since they simply have way more room to work with in Florida than they do in WDL, but I never considered the international visitors angle on it before. I believe the reason that the one in wdw doesn’t get the overlay is because unlike Land, wdw is seen more as potentially once in a lifetime for some families. The ride would have to go down for extended times for the overlay to be put on and taken down. Not to mention the normal haunted mansion being completely unavailable while it is up. It robs a family of a incredibly well known ride that they might only get one chance to go on. Land doesn’t have this problem as it is seem more as a park for people on the west coast since it is not as sprawling as wdw

In actuality, there WERE lock shock and barrel animatronics in the mirrors for the first incarnation of HMH, but they changed it to Oogie and the presents the year after. They’re still at Tokyo Disneyland though!

I recently visited Disneyland and the part where Jack is dressed as Santa in the snow looks SO impressive. There are a lot of things that I love about that ride. Nightmare is also my favorite movie so I might be a tad bit bias lol

Yes. It's an overlay. I know this because one time when I was in the stretching room, one of the paintings malfunctioned during the stretch, and snapped back down to reveal the original painting underneath.

I don't even remember which painting it was covering. :P However, I definitely remember it snapping back up, like a retractable window shade. It was just funny to see something like that happen. I'm used to ride breakdowns, but not parts of the decor actually coming undone.

I'm actually curious how would a Nightmare Before Christmas overlay work in the Manor, story-wise. The Haunted Mansion's lack of story helped out in that aspect, but I feel the Manor's straightforward storyline would pose a storytelling challenge to the Imagineers.

jeebs621 the issue would be that they don’t want to have to close it down too long for changing decorations. It’s already closed for weeks to go back and forth from normal to holiday, and they don’t want to make fans mad by adding several days of closure at least for another version.

Haunted Mansion Holiday has been one of my absolute favorite attractions ever since I was a little kid. And The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my absolute favorites because I love Jack Skellington and his dog Zero. I have so many different collections of Jack and Zero merchandise. The attraction always makes my birthday very special because my birthday is in October!!

One thing that almost everyone misses out on when covering Haunted Mansion Holiday is Sparky's tombstone in the pet cematary. For context, Sparky is the dog in the Tim Burton movie Frankenweenie that gets brought back to life by its owner, Victor Frankenstein. After the 2012 movie came out, not to be confused with the live action movie that Tim made and is based off of, Disney added Sparky's tombstone to the pet cemetery for Haunted Mansion holiday since Nightmare Before Christmas and Frankenweenie are both Tim Burton movies.

Here’s an interesting story, the first time I rode the haunted mansion it was during the holidays, and brother told me about how it gets changed every year for the holidays. Then Disney Infinity 1.0 came out and the same skeleton I saw on the ride was a figure. From there I did more research and that is how I got into the nightmare before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas has yet to receive a franchise of theatrical sequels. It’s really overdue for a sequel, but the video game on XBOX and PS2 entitled The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, which is a video game sequel to the film. They are not retelling the story of the film as a video game.

Small inaccuracy you mentioned: The Haunted Mansion would also be 19th century (1800s), as opposed to 18th Century (1700s). Though you’re correct that the Victorian setting of A Christmas Carol would not fit with the Antebellum aesthetic of the mansion. Still a superb video, regardless of my nitpick.

I've always thought it would be cool for the Magic Kingdom to have a seasonal overlay, but with Gravity Falls. It wouldn't be that much of a shift for the Haunted Mansion and the show I think would hit right in with the theme of the ride. you could even have Bill Cipher take over the Ghost Host role for the season and then got back to business as usual after a few months

Well what would they do? I don't think that pirates would really celebrate Halloween and I guess you could put some animatronics in Halloween costumes on Splash but that wouldn't make any sense because it would have nothing to do with the story. Maybe you could put some small decorations on some more neutral non-storytelling attractions like Dumbo, Casey Jr. etc. and put some Halloween costumes on Dumbo or put up some decoration on the towns of Storybook Village and on some of the plain grass and say that everybody is celebrating Halloween in Storybook Land!

With splash mountain they could just make the whole thing look more like fall with red leaves on all the trees and pumpkin vines on the ground and give some of the animals costumes. With pirates they could replace some of the pirates with the undead ones from the movies, thought that would probably be too expensive

I remember going in the holiday mansion when I was really little. When I was in the stretching room I was friken scared that I cover my ears and eyes and I would try to look up to see Jack but I was still scared lol. But I got over it when I got in the actual ride I think. I rode the overlay in 2005. Honestly it felt like the back room of Halloween props were piled on a great ride. IMO they didn’t nail the balance between overlaying one story and transitioning to another. It looked and felt more like a themed sales circular. Then again I worked for Disney for years and the luster loses its shine pretty quickly. To be fair the parks exist to make money (lots and lots of money) and not to reward the sentiments of 40 and 50-something’s. Were that the profit motive they’d be shuttered in one season. As much as the Star Wars sequels turn me off I try to think about the difference between what I saw in 1977 (at 5 years old) and what my dad saw at 25 years old. And therein lies the difference.

The changed preshow is such a downgrade. As an LED technician, just watching that refresh rate on Jack breaking the window at 30fps just takes away the immersion of the ride. From what I heard, they use a Panasonic projector to show those animated features on the rides. Old fashion animotronics is always superior.

I love HMH! My favorite is the pumpkin snow hill and ice angels 🎃 another change is that Tim Burton’s Mickey Mouse replaces the raven in the conservatory, seance, and graveyard (backward fall) scenes.
