This movie could have been great if it was more like "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya". The plot of that is similar - main character, who comes from a whimsical world of aliens, espers and time-travelers suddenly wakes up to find that his world is that of a normal highschooler. And it's a brilliant and emotionally-intense roller-coaster as he struggles to reunite with his friends who now have no idea who he is. Equestia Girls could have been brilliant if, rather than being just as whimsy, the human world was more like ours - where things like the "magic of friendship" would be laughed off as "gay" and "cliche". Where kids grew up and lost their wonder. And the movie itself could be a message about how the world starts to corrupt the minds of kids, making them lose their sense of wonder, bowing to peer pressure, changing who they are and abandoning their passions to fit in, getting bullied or becoming a bully. And the lesson is that highschool and the adult world isn't going to be the fun-happy-whimsy place like it is in My Little Pony - but that's only because we let it. Why is the real world not like Equestria? Because it's the norm. In Equestria, things like bullying someone until they commit suicide or rape or murder don't happen not because it's a fantasy world, but because everyone is so nice and cooperative and caring that if they did acure it would be treated as such an abomination that the entire populace would root it out before you could blink. But in our world, we hear something bad happen, we feel bad, but most of us will shrug it off as just something that's not our responsibility. But the truth is, if everyone in the world made every act of injustice and violence their responsibility and responded to deal with it personally, their would be no injustice. "Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most: that people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love, true love, never dies... No matter if they're true or not, a man should believe in those things because those are the things worth believing in."
@Mathignihilcehk9 жыл бұрын
+jeramahia123 Almost none of those things you stated in your quote are true. People are, at their core, evil. Courage means nothing, in the long term. Virtue... isn't meaningless, but it isn't everything. Power and money aren't meaningless, they are quite useful as tools. Good does not always triumph over evil, ultimately, perhaps, but in the sort run, it rarely does, if ever. Love... yeah, you got me there, but also keep in mind that "true love" doesn't exist among humans naturally. It's something that must be artificially added, although it can spread among humans. Finally, you should never believe a lie, because it is worth believing in. You should seek the truth out, because it is the only logical response. The REAL truth is far better than any ideals man will come up with. It also leads to a far better life and, if everyone followed the logical conclusion of it, a better society. In fact, it implies the best life and society possible. I hope that one day you decide to seek it out.
@ShinyAvalon8 жыл бұрын
Whoa, cynical much? That's no more "realistic" than the fluffiest, most feel-good Pollyanna outlook ever conceived. Realism does _not_ mean choosing the most misanthropic of two options, it means recognizing things as they actually are. People are not evil at their core, they are both good _and_ evil...we are hardwired to be both selfish _and_ altruistic, because both can be survival characteristics in different circumstances. Courage is neither everything _nor_ nothing; it is a trait that can make someone either brave or foolhardy, determined or ruthless, depending on how and why it is applied. Honor (which you ignored in your reply) means, at the bottom line, keeping your agreements, which is highly compatible with the traits of logic and truth you espouse. "Virtue" itself is a nebulous concept: many mutually exclusive traits can be virtuous in different circumstances. Power and money are indeed useful as tools, as you said; they are both means of achieving ends. The problem with them is that some decide to pursue them as ends in themselves in order to satisfy some neurotic anxiety they've developed-and that, I think is what the quote above was speaking against. Whether True Love(tm) exists among humans or not sort of depends on what your definition of "true love" is; and saying that it doesn't exist "naturally" among humans seems to presuppose that either 1) it does exist (but only artificially) among humans, or that 2) it naturally exists in some species _other_ than humans. In which case I'd have to know either what constitutes "artificially existing" among humans in your eyes, or what other species you think it _is_ natural to, in order to know what you mean when you speak of "true love." I would argue (based on my own definitions) that in one form-the love of a parent for a child-it most certainly is natural to human beings (as well as most warm-blooded creatures, and some cold-blooded ones); and that in the more "sophisticated" conception-that of knowing another person fully and completely and still loving them in a deep and abiding way that transcends time and circumstances-it is rare, but still possible, and no more "artificial" than any trait that requires knowledge, insight and wisdom to possess. (We are designed to learn and grow in knowledge and understanding as we live; therefore traits that require experience and learning are as "natural" to us as any we show at birth.) Good, of course, does not always triumph over evil, neither in the short run nor the long run; but the original quote wasn't saying that-it was saying that it is important to believe it even when it may _not_ be true. In fact, that is what it said about all the traits it mentioned, and I think, based on the context, what it actually meant by "believing in" was "choosing." That is, the quote says that it is important to choose the more "virtuous" of opposing traits: to consciously look for, and attempt to call forth, the good that lies in everyone's core rather than the evil; to choose to act with courage, honor and virtue whenever we can; to regard power and money as tools best used for good ends, not as counters in some zero-sum status game; to aid the cause of Good whenever we perceive it and have the freedom to act for it; and to choose to love others in the truest way we can. It is absolutely true that you should never choose to believe a lie; but the more "cynical" ideas are no more (or less) "true" than the more "idealistic" ones, since both have validity at different times. Logic (where it concerns us) _must_ take emotions and sentiment into account, because both Logic and Emotion are "natural" to human beings; both have a part in the ultimate truth of our nature, and in the world we create because of it.
@Mathignihilcehk8 жыл бұрын
Shiny Aeon "People are ... both good and evil" this is an interesting response. Yes, they are. This is still radically different from the assumption that "people are basically good". Their hearts are ever inclined towards evil, and though they were designed to be creatures of pure good, they are not and never more will be, at least until the ultimate end. Thus, you can't rely or believe in their goodness. Sure, they may have moments of it, but those are ever fleeting. In the moment you need your friends most, that is precisely when they will betray you. Courage is useful, but not in many common applications. Courage is acting in spite of fear. I'd never advocate action for the sake of action, but it's better to have all options available, than to be paralized by fear. Virtue, and honor are tricky, because everyone uses different definitions. If it's a form of moral excellence, then it is both important, and yet not everything. Love, faith and wisdom... all of these are more important than this variant of virtue. "some decide to pursue them[power and money] as ends" this is indeed foolishness. Who buys a hammer if they don't want to use it? "depends on what your definition of 'true love'" Well... "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." That is true love. True love is unconditional. If you would withold it because your partner betrayed you, then it isn't love. If you pay someone money/time/attention in expectation for money/time/attention then you have a social contract, not love. If you protect your legacy, whether that be your children, or country then you are selfish, not loving. "seems to presuppose that either", actually both are true. It does exist artificially among humans, and it naturally exists among some entity other than humans... God is the author of true love. God's love to humanity is what gives humanity the ability to love in return, but even so it is rare. What I mean by this, is that true love is immeasurably valuable, but you can never confuse it with conditional love. Conditional love is a tool, made of rust. It's great while it lasts, but it is doomed from the start. Those social contracts are easily broken, and you will be betrayed. "Logic (where it concerns us) must take emotions and sentiment into account" this is where you are most wrong. Emotions and sentiments are meaningless. You can get stabbed in the back and feel sorrow, or joy. The emotion is a mere product of your mental state and present physiological state. To choose truth, is to reject lies, and false beliefs. You must accept that friends are inclined to betray you at their best opportunity. To do otherwise is to doom yourself to the consequences of believing lies. Furthermore, it is only after accepting this truth, that you can begin to love. You can love others, and even when they betray you, smile... knowing the truth that their betrayal was coming from a mile away, you still acted out love, and thusly you do not resent their true nature, though it is evil. For all are evil, and yet some good can still be achieved... this is love. Anything less is ignorance.
@ShinyAvalon8 жыл бұрын
"['People are ... both good and evil'] is still radically different from the assumption that 'people are basically good.'" Yes. Though I think we could all stand to give a little more "benefit of the doubt" to the good side in our day-to-day lives. "Their hearts are ever inclined towards evil..." No, they aren't. Evil isn't some fascinating drug we're born addicted to; we don't lie awake at night salivating and shaking from our repressed desire to go out and "do evil" for evil's sake. THAT idea is an illusion invented by people who have a stake in controlling others around them. It's always easier to control someone who feels worthless. Self-respect is a bad quality for slaves to have (from the perspective of the slavers, of course), so people interested in creating easily-controlled followers will invent philosophies that make their followers feel worthless. None of those people who say we're "naturally evil" ever seem to think that maybe it's their _own_ evil nature driving them to think that or to try to convince others to think that. Funny how they never seem to suspect that rigid self-righteousness might spring from the evil inside them.... "In the moment you need your friends most, that is precisely when they will betray you." No it isn't. I admit that, when it happens, it sure _feels_ like that, but that's an illusion created by our naturally limited vision. It's not inevitable that anyone will betray you - unless your definition of "betrayal" is absurdly broad, of course. "'There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.' That is true love." I'd say that's more the _effect_ of love than love itself. Self-sacrifice results from love, but the "purpose" of love is not to bring self-sacrifice about...it's more of a side effect. To say otherwise is to say that, if a deep and true love never results in a sacrificial moment (through sheer lack of the life-threatening circumstances that make self-sacrifice necessary), then it cannot qualify as "love..." despite being otherwise identical to the love experienced that _does_ result in sacrifice. To say that one love "doesn't qualify" as True Love just because death never happens to be put on the table is ludicrous. Either love is a thing in itself, or it isn't. To define love AS self-sacrifice is mixing up two related, but different, things. ...Also, a person can lay down their life for another person for reasons _other than_ love. They could do it for sworn duty, for glory, even for revenge, really. So I can't imagine that's a definitive test of "true love." "True love is unconditional. If you would withhold [love] because your partner betrayed you, then it isn't love." Yeah, I'm not sure what you're talking about here. No love is truly "unconditional," not in the mortal world. People can't "withhold" love, like it's some kind of hoarded commodity that they dole out by choice. They can withhold _expressions_ of love, sure, but it's not the same thing. Frankly, the idea that "true" love should be unaffected by betrayal (of all things!) sounds like a bit of propaganda dreamed up by someone who really _wants_ to betray others but doesn't want to face the consequences of that betrayal. "Yes, I stole your life savings to buy lottery tickets, emailed your deepest secrets to your worst enemy, and cooked and ate your beloved cat...but if your love for me was True Love, that wouldn't matter!" Yeah, _no_. Actions have consequences. Deliberately betraying someone _will_ change how they think and feel about you. Love is a precious gift...you don't give that to someone unworthy of any trust, respect, or loyalty. "If you pay someone money/time/attention in expectation for money/time/attention then you have a social contract, not love....If you protect your legacy, whether that be your children, or country then you are selfish, not loving." Oh, yes, because a mother laying down her life for her child is totally thinking "I must protect my legacy! This kid is my key to immortality, if they die, I will lose out!" Nonsense! (If that were true, then adoptive parents would never sacrifice themselves for their (unrelated) children, and that's just not the case.) Dude, ALL relationships begin with selfishness. The best of friendships sometimes begin because you enjoy spending time with someone, and you (selfishly) want more of that enjoyment. Love is what develops _afterwards_, when your appreciation for the other person grows _beyond_ whatever benefit you gain from them. So what you have could be a social contract, or protecting a legacy, and _also_ be love. The situations are NOT mutually exclusive. "[Love] does exist artificially among humans..." Who says it's artificial? If we're born with the capacity for it, then it's natural for us-by definition. It is a part of our nature. You don't get much more "natural" than that. "...and it naturally exists among some entity other than humans..." Why yes; I'd say a dog's love is about the purest and most selfless love you can run across in the everyday world. "God is the author of true love. God's love to humanity is what gives humanity the ability to love in return..." Assuming the most common conception of God here, I'm not sure that's exactly the case. If God created us, then isn't loving us just "protecting his legacy" in some way? That is, if you compare God's Love with human love, which I don't think you can...see below. [End Part 1...see next post for Part II!]
@ShinyAvalon8 жыл бұрын
[Part II of 2. TLDR at the end of this.] "What I mean by this, is that true love is immeasurably valuable, but you can never confuse it with conditional love. Conditional love is a tool, made of rust." I don't know, that seems a bit simplistic to me. Conditional love is pretty much the only way human beings _can_ love. We are not God; we cannot love like God does. Divine Love is on a whole other plane of existence than human love, and you cannot compare them in any meaningful way. [Again, see below for more about God's Love and human love.] "Those social contracts are easily broken, and you will be betrayed." Um, no. You _can_ be betrayed, but it's not guaranteed. Unless (again) your definition of "betrayal" is broad to the point of absurdity. "Emotions and sentiments are meaningless." Um, they're an integral part of us, by our very nature. They are certainly meaningful to _us._ "You can get stabbed in the back and feel sorrow, or joy." No, you _can't_ feel joy from being stabbed in the back. You may be able to feel understanding, tolerance, or forgiveness, but no one human is going to feel _joy_ from true betrayal. Betrayal by definition means to violate a trust. Joy is not a sane reaction to having your trust violated. You can, if your psyche has been twisted enough, experience _happiness_ (a superficial feeling of pleasure and content) at a betrayal (because it confirms some expectation you had, or perfectly "fits" a pattern that felt incomplete), but joy is a much deeper emotion. Unless you were "trusting" a person to help you murder innocents and their betrayal fills you with the joy that comes from knowing you cannot commit an atrocity that you never "really" wanted to in the first place or something...see earlier regarding "twisted psyche." That kind of mindset is lightyears away from anything remotely approaching normal for human beings, and I can't see the definition of something as basic as love being dependent on something so (literally) exceptional. "The emotion is a mere product of your mental state and present physiological state." Your point being...? Our _consciousness_ is a mere product of our mental state and present physiological state. We may have consciousness in some other form _not_ related to bodily existence, but it isn't consciousness as we know it, here and now. Spiritual consciousness, if it exists (and I believe it does), must be an entirely different kind of existing than we can imagine in our current, limited state of being. What love is to such a state is an interesting question, but it's not really relevant to our lives in the here and now. "To choose truth, is to reject lies, and false beliefs. You must accept that friends are inclined to betray you at their best opportunity." Yeah, no. No one "has to accept" that at all. You need accept that it's always a _possibility_, because we aren't omniscient, and you can always be mistaken about someone else. But believing that friends WILL betray you is _as much a lie and as false a believe as believing that they will never betray you._ Both are possible; therefore, truth is accepting that either one can happen. "To do otherwise is to doom yourself to the consequences of believing lies." No, to do otherwise is to accept the _risk_ that you _may be_ believing in lies. Human beings cannot (at present) mind-meld with each other, and therefore perfect knowledge of each other isn't possible. Also, things are not easily divided into "Truth" and "Lies." Reality is complex, and therefore truth can be complex; the difference between truth and falsehood can be a fuzzy zone rather than a sharp line. There's a reason that the legal oath is to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." It's because half-truths and "embellished" truths can be both literally true, and yet still designed to (and able to) deceive. "Furthermore, it is only after accepting this truth, that you can begin to love." Well, it's certainly the only way to love without _risk_, that's true. And if avoiding any risk of uncertainty or vulnerability is what you're most concerned with, that's one way to attempt it... Myself, I believe that love is beautiful despite its inherent risk. I think that accepting that love may hurt you, and choosing to love anyway, makes love infinitely more precious and glorious. It take _courage_ to love, because it takes courage to be vulnerable, and it takes courage to be uncertain. To commit to love another while assuming their inevitable betrayal takes away uncertainty (you are _certain_ they will betray you) and also removes vulnerability (you basically hurt yourself before the other person _can_ hurt you). This is why I can't take God's love as a model for human love. God's love is, by definition, given with no risk, no vulnerability He's God; he is infinitely powerful, so how could any of us be a real danger to Him? He is infinitely knowing, so how could He face uncertainty? God is (as a result) infinitely loving, and human beings just can't approach that state of mind. In my mind, love is "meant" to be a risk for people; it is meant to require courage. Trying to eliminate the risk (by making oneself invulnerable to hurt, or utterly certain about an uncertain outcome) from love turns it into something else, something unrecognizable. It might, in certain circumstances, be seen as trying to compare yourself to God. Anyway, Love, being a complex subject, is something that books can (and have) been written about. As a good starting place, you might check out C. S. Lewis's book, _The Four Loves._ He admits that he had a simplistic view of love when he started the project, seeing it divided into Gift-Love and Need-Love, and intending to praise the first while condemning the second. But he found he couldn't do that; if Need-Love is inferior, not worth the name of "love," then how exactly are humans to love God? Need-Love is the only way _possible_ for humans to love God; for a human to feel Gift-Love for God is so egotistical as to be ludicrous. Eventually he settled on seeing four basic kinds of love in human life: Affection, Friendship, Eros (Romantic Love), and Caritas (Charitable Love); hence the title...but the book explores love and the way humans see it and experience it from many different perspectives, and is furthermore a very good read. I highly recommend it. Tl:dr: Humans are _not_ drawn magically to Evil; human love is, by definition, love on a human scale; betrayal is possible but not inevitable; love is inherently risky, and trying to eliminate all risk of pain or uncertainty turns it into something unrecognizable; and love is complex because reality and truth are complex. Also, C. S. Lewis's _The Four Loves_ is awesome and should be read by anyone curious about the nature of love in human existence.

Id like to point out- Twillight seems confused about Celestia being the prinicipal, let alone the concept of a principal, even though twillight literally attended her school and obviously knows Celestia is (technically) the principal (In this video, the clip isnt shown, but it is in the movie)

I liked the movie... it was no Wizard of Oz, but it wasnt Godzilla '98
@rndmpinkiepie6410 жыл бұрын
***** true, but the Toho Godzilla movies weren't just about Gojira alone, there were always stories of humans with them. It makes the movie a little more realistic. Even when something huge is going on, people still have stories of their own. Though I'm sure it won't take as long in the sequel...which /will/ take long to be out
@rndmpinkiepie6410 жыл бұрын
Rogelio Rocha (and Mothra) but I agree. With todays movies, the first one can pull off the 'little action til the last half-hour' thing (except Fantastic Four, but they couldnt pull off a movie anyway) so I'm sure Rodan and Godzilla will be on screen quickly, then Mothra, then Ghidorah (unless Ghidorah is a hero in the movie like in Tokyo S.O.S., which was confusing)
@rndmpinkiepie6410 жыл бұрын
Rogelio Rocha ah. I get those mixed up. My thought: I wonder if they are going to involve alien beings. Honestly, I think it wouldn't be well done...
@rndmpinkiepie6410 жыл бұрын
Rogelio Rocha eh, there's an argument about the strongest foe Godzilla's ever had. I still say four-way tie: Mothra, Kiryu, Destroyah and SpaceGodzilla. Reasons: I don't think Godzill has ever beaten Mothra, even 1-on-1. Kiryu is Gojira vs Godzilla, both at a stronger level than they were before. SpaceGodzilla required Godzilla and M.O.G.U.R.A. to he defeated, so Godzilla couldn't succeed alone. Destroyah was overpowered by Godzilla in a 'wrong tike, wrong place' scenario, meaning Godzilla was already at his most powrful form and the army already had super weapons available to be used on Godzilla. So when Destroyah killed Jr, it gave Godzilla that final push that made him even more powerful. If Destroyah would have come around during the 80's, Godzilla wouldn't stand a chance. Ghidorah and Gigan are powerful enough that Godzilla usually requires help, but I think both of them would have haf a bad day if Destroyah showed up ...er, anyway, that's just my personal opinion and theory, not fact
@rndmpinkiepie6410 жыл бұрын
Rogelio Rocha Gigan also fits into the cyborg territory (look up neo gigan and you'll see concept art of what he looked like before the makeover) but I agree with you (Gigan was the first to make him bleed, but Hedorah is a tie for melting Godzilla's hand to bone and burning out his eyeball since Gigan picked out Godzilla's eye) beside Godzilla, Destoyah is my favorite kaiju (it looks like a man-made demon and was the one, who indirectly, killed the 1954 Gojira)

I actually really liked EG when I first saw it, but I never noticed any of the mistakes it had until now...especially the framing Twilight photoshop thing. Snips and Snails aren't even close to the same height/build as Twilight, plus it was really annoying how Flash just HAPPENED to be there to resolve everything within seconds. Like you want Twilight to be proven innocent but come on. Also I really didn't like that Twilight had to go into the portal alone, and it didn't really make sense that she was the only one who didn't already have a human counterpart, like a human world without Twilight for some reason. Before I watched the movie I thought that the Mane 6 would all go through the portal together, but it was really disappointing to find that it's just Twilight being the only one who has to adjust to a crazy new world and meeting her (human) friends again...it felt really awkward. Plus the move that the Mane 6 did at the end to defeat Sunset Shimmer was (as stated in the video) very unoriginal. Princess Celestia is very sweet in the pony world, but in EG she just seemed really uncaring and standoffish, very out of character for her...
@usernameyunovalid19 жыл бұрын
At the end of the second movie, there is a human Twilight So we have that to look forward to
@kyuubinaruto179 жыл бұрын
Danielle Shackleford TVtropes may help to resolve a few of those issues. Flash showing up to prove Twilight's innocence so quick could be attributed to having dated Sunset in the past, and thus knowing the way she operates, especially after the video of Twilight showed up online. Even before Rainbow Rocks showed her it was established that Twilight had a human counterpart by Pinkie. She just goes to school in the city. If Twilight's genius is relatively the same in the human world the human Twilight likely skipped a few grades and is in college or a specialty school. Or, it's just that like the pony Twilight, she doesn't interact with others much because she's too busy with studying. And as for Celestia, you have to keep in mind that they're not going to simply be carbon copies of their alternate world selves. Human Fluttershy, while scared, still backtalked Sunset under her breath. How often does pony Fluttershy talk smack? Human Rainbow Dash is extremely arrogant because she lacks pony Rainbow's events that led her to be more humble like Mare-do-well, Hurricane Fluttershy, and Wonderbolts academy. And human Celestia DID talk like her pony self at the end of the movie when she presented the crown to Twilight.

I also later brushed her hair later because when I took her out of the package her hair was an afro. She has a blob of hair on the top of her head to cover her baldness. I'm wondering if i should burn it, since her awkward eyes seem to watch me as I sleep. Then again I watch Doctor Who before bed, and often get nightmares from that, too...

I just thought of one: If the portal to the pony world is just a statue in a public place, then how come no human has discovered it yet? All it'd take is one of the students leaning against it or kicking a ball against it, any time within those 3 days that it's active. In Equestria the mirror was kept under lock and key.
@imthebossmermaid3648 Жыл бұрын
Maybe it only works if somoene knows about the portal and intends to cross over. It didn't seem to suck Fluttershy in even though the tiara flew into her world.

I think the writers did the very best they could do with what they had. Thinking of it in those terms, it was great. it was about as good as it could have gotten with the boss giving them the toy, saying "put this in High School", and then leaving them to their work. Imagining if it was just a movie for entertainment purposes, it was pretty bad. but for the focus of the movie being for selling the weird toys, it did a pretty fair job of being a decently entertaining movie in addition to that. Here I'll be hoping for a full on MLP movie a few seasons down the road, perhaps in all the theatres this time.

Technically, the Crystal Empire's a sovereign city-state independent of Celestia's rule, so Cadance and Shining Armor would run their own school if they taught. The two biggest sins in this movie to me were: 1. Twilight just shows up and wins prom queen (essentially) at a school she doesn’t go to and nobody questions it. Everyone just takes her word for it when she says she’s an exchange student but legally she isn’t. 2. The Mane 6 in the pony world are adults. (After all they have their own homes and adult jobs) Their human counterparts are teenagers. That means twilight, a grown adult, is dating a teenager in this movie.

Here's a random sin for you: in that one scene where Fluttershy spills the fruit bowl, the fruit spills in a downward direction, plus the fact that Fluttershy is standing literally 4 feet away from Twilight, yet somehow the fruit still manages to soak Twilight's shirt.

Also, 7:10. "Dealt with (because we can't say kill)." XD Okay, I'm glad I favorited this video.

Equestria Girls made my head hurt. Other than the new remix for the intro.

The fact that these ponies don’t know what a hand is yet they’ve said “hand” a lot of times before this movie even came out.

6:39 you also should've included a clip of Iron Will. Ya know, that character from season ONE who literally has hands. Them knowing the word but not its meaning I could forgive... if they hadn't all interacted with a creature with the very things the word is for. Should that count as an extra sin? Oh, and, fun fact: this movie was the first piece of MLP FiM media I ever watched and what got me into the fandom

Honestly the entire Equestria Girls series was created for the sole purpose of having an excuse to sell MLP human dolls instead of pony dolls
