Thanks to the Community @ uavpal.com ! This is some epic use of tech. About 1-2GB of data per hour is used per sim card. I was breathing hard because I was very nervous, it was very hot and the Tongans were yelling and playing baseball nearby 😆😅 and probably because I'm out of shape. dji can make their drones fly as far as they want but they know that if they do that then sales will drop. if drone A can fly 25+ miles, then what would be the point of purchasing another drone ? this is why each one of their drones has different features and can fly further than the previous. they bird feed the public but it makes for a good business model, now if someone or a company would stop being scared and make some good after market parts then we can see things like this video happen with drones...

At a top speed of around 25MPH, given the vast expanses of typical search areas, it would actually be very inefficient. You'd run out of go-juice after a few square miles. Maybe specific targeted missions..
@sansaratech
@sansaratech 4 жыл бұрын
@BECOMING WR The swarm array idea is an interesting one, but yes, you can search very large areas of ocean at speeds much greater than 100mph. It's done every single day with conventional aircraft. They have thermal imaging, FLIR, and all manner of technology to find boats and other floating objects, and warm bodies. When you consider that a search area can be tens of thousands of square miles, 25 miles per hour would be impractically slow. You'd never complete a mission. And you would need thousands upon thousands of UAVs of this size all coordinated. They'd all need a place to launch from, and a place to land. At sea. And you're still limited by a finite battery charge. Like I said, I can imagine a potential use for very targeted searches, but in a typical search and rescue mission at sea, you're going to need fast, long range aircraft initially.

David Webb Polarizing filter rotated to the right angle will reduce, possibly eliminate, reflection from water surface... ... but I do not think that would be a good idea at all. It will very much reduce the visibility of the surface and immediately make it much harder to estimate height. For instance, there would be a complete loss of parallax progression information as the reflection moves through the frame at higher speed than the floor of the sea. That is a big clue to speed AND height.

My Mavic Pro 1 quadcopter can only reach about 3.5 miles from the home point before it must head back due to battery limitations. Round trip the absolute maximum distance it will cover is 6.1miles, after which it typically lands with 15% to 20% of battery charge. Seeing this Parrot cover 25 miles over open ocean where winds could shift on a dime, then return home with over 40% battery left at touchdown is astonishing. The stability of the video picture is also unexpected. For truly long-range flights I can now see there is no substitute for a fixed-wing platform. This is a landmark achievement that raises the bar for long-distance FPV feats of endurance even today in 2022 four years after this bold flight was posted here on youtube. Wow!

Such a cool vid. The path across the ground is called your ground track. I do know that my days as a radio technician taught me that a radio signal travels better closer to the water. They said it was because the water acts as a ground plane. It could also be because towers are aimed at the height most of us are. Dunno. Your experiment suggests it is true. Here in Australia they are making the sport ever less legal. Needing a license to fly them now (above a certain weight). Perhaps you can figure out the payload and run a small parcel delivery business. ha. (I'm surprised you don't have a rescue boat on standby with perhaps a blinking red LED on top so you can find it).

I first saw this couple of years ago while waiting to board a flight, time just flew by (no pun intended). Sometimes I just leave this on whilst doing nothing, it's zen as hell 😂 As a drone pilot myself I just love seeing people enjoying their flights and taking the time to watch the scenery.

I am not the only one thinking it. amazing comment. I see this video inspires you as it does me.

k6lsn, oh yes! Imagine flying a tiny jet FPV and maybe even via 4G! Just the thought that this is actually possible at an amateur level - we truly live in the future!!! But I guess, flying a tiny jet remotely at 100mph++ outside LOS would be a far greater and more risky challenge... I'd love to be part of such a project, though...

Check out the Raybird 3 UAV. It can go 250 miles controllably or as far as you want with a pre-set path. It has a flight time of 23 hours. It can carry huge cameras. It has a briefcase as a controller. It's $15,000 and available for anyone.

Interesting. The 120km FPV range limit is a bit concerning when the DISCO can do better with the cell signal capability. With larger batteries the DISCO can fly more than 100miles and more with a complimentary solar system attached. I'm not sure I like the parachute landing. If there is some wind it could spell disaster. I like being able to do fairly pinpoint landings with DISCO. Raybird 3 looks Great for those applications which would need the payload capability though 👍.

Dustin. HILARIOUS VIDEO IDEA: your buddy (on lanai - with no chickens) calls you (on Maui - with chickens and eggs galore) saying he ran out of eggs and needs one for a cake recipe. you're like, "sure buddy, no problem. I'll have it to you in about a half hour". you use the disco to deliver the egg to lanai! you'd just have to get a buddy to go to lanai and figure out where to land there. your buddy would also have to be able to hand launch the disco for your return flight. if done right, would make for a hilarious viral video.

Rctestflight did several videos on solar rc fpv aircraft. It works, but it requires alot of solar cells and a very light carbon fiber airframe. But he managed to squeeze quite a few hours of flight out of it, by being easy on the throttle and by trying to find thermals to ride.

the problem with drones with that is adding weight calls for more power from the motor which in turn effects battery life. also getting a panel strong enough to charge lithium ion batteries

I'm impressed. And it's 2 year old technology now. I wonder what is out there these days. Also, just a curiosity note. Your battery power dropped 15% exactly at the point of landing which tells me that possibly the processor might have updated the battery life based on the motor power surge at the point of crash. but dunno. Nice video.
