Teaching a bird the movements of each step, in sequence, with repetition, results in the bird learning how to produce the outcome, with treat-rewards. I have observed animals in the wild, learning on their own how to problem-solve. A free-range Bovine Steer had wandered into the back side of a local state park ( outside of town, in the desert of southern Arizona). He found a water spigot that had a difficult crank handle, and obviously figured out how to turn it on with his horns. > Driving by, I saw the water running with no one around, so I stopped to turn it off, that water shouldn't be wasted in the desert. As soon as I turned it off and returned to the car, I saw the Bovine come out of the adjacent brush, look at me, look at the faucet, walk over to it, lower his head, and use his horns to (bit by bit) turn the crank handle, turning on the water again. I watched him drink directly from the spigot; he looked back at me, as if to say, " Don't turn this off, I need the water on." I returned to the park entrance, spoke to the Entry Attendant, told what I had witnessed, and the Attendant's response was, " Yes, we know. We don't know where the Free-range Steer came from, but we know he turns the water on, and leaves it on, and that any time anyone turns it off, he turns it on again." The creatures are far more intelligent than we've believed. Not only do they have the ability to learn from teaching, but they can figure things out on their own. If it had been a simple lever, or an old-fashioned hand-pump handle, the Bovine turning the water on wouldn't have surprised me. The crank handle is the most difficult of all faucet/spigot handles. How would a Steer know that turning it in a circle would open the water flow? He couldn't do it quickly, it took repeated turns with his horns to open the spigot, but he gained his water, in a hot, dry climate.

I agree animals understand much more than what we give them credit for. A short story of mine: I took my dog to my friend’s house and my dog wanted to go home. She barked at the gate and I ignored her. She came inside and barked at me and then ran back outside to the door and I ignored her. What she did next baffled me. She went and grabbed my shoe, came to me and threw it at me and barked. Hahaha it was cute and smart. She knew there was a language barrier and she was thinking how to explain it to me. She knew I wore shoes before going out and thought that’s the way to explain it! Now, imagine yourself, to be a human who can’t speak. You will have a hard time thinking of this method!! I’m sure I would!

I fell in love with these lovely birds. I have two parakeets, and the girl is so gentle with me, always kisses my finger, and learned to come to my arm by herself, as soon as I start calling her. Both birds learned that if they have issues going back to their cage, they can rely on me to pick them up and move them in, and they come and ask for help sometimes. Chatty and loving animals. You can not be sad when you hear them chirp, they greet every day with equal enthusiasm. I truly admire them. It seems like some creatures were pure gift from God to make us feel better. ♥

Can i use parrot to lock pick the bank's safe?
@vsvnrg32635 жыл бұрын
this bird was trained stage by stage. we had sulfur crested cockatoos who worked out how to remove the split ring that locked the cage door. then they just decided it was easier to just bend and destroy the split ring. so we used stronger split rings. fail. so we used a bicycle combination lock. within weeks they had worked how to undo it and do it faster and faster. i'm talking seconds. we ended up having to use wire so thick that we needed to use pliers to open the cage every day. then they worked out they could cut the cage wire with their beaks. we came home from school to see them working their way up the front of the cage. then they discovered they could chew through the timber on the back and sides of the cage. to get to the point, a sulfur crested cockatoo could open a bank safe as long as it knew there as something inside for it.

Many times. While still impressive with the memorization, the bird isn't exactly solving the puzzle. The bird's owner most likely taught him how to do each task to open the door and the bird eventually memorized it and can repeat it when asked. Not trying to downplay it's impressive nature, but the parrot memorized what the owner taught him and it wasn't solved solely by the parot.

I'd like you to try and do that with your average 2 year old humen child, even with teaching and repetition, won't happen, birds of the kind are so smart, social and a gift to this Earth, there are so many mamals and insects , reptiles and more , but birds are so smart and are so supposed to be with there own, people shouldn't own these guys and gals unless they plan on being very involved in there life, these smart birds will break down so fast with out affection, rip there own feathers out , self mutilate , all because they just want love, so before you go to a horrible pet shop and buy one, make sure you have the time and love to care for them, other wise why break thier heart?????????

@@hamper22 , this man taught this cocky bit by bit. had the man given the cocky a strong desire to need to open all locks in a particular sequence without any step by step training, it probably would have. sulfur crested cockies would have learnt the tricks faster than any other species of bird on this earth. i'm in australia where they are native. other countries need to make sure they never get established in the wild. these things know how to open rubbish bins that have had bricks placed on the lids.

This parrot is totally stupid. My parrot is definitely far more intelligent than this, she would have not wasted her time messing with locks and walked round the outside to the other side of the door. Offer her that itty bitty treat and she would give you her disdainful look and push your hand away, silently saying You want the treat, you do the trick.
