By the time they did this performance EVERYBODY knew the sketch. The comedy came not only from the sketch its self, but from the interplay between the audience and the actors. John and Michael tried to make each other laugh all the time on stage.

John Cleese had (probably still has) an unbelievable ability to maintain a straight persona while doing some of the funniest jokes and watching everyone else lose it. The only person I've seen handle it better was Ronnie Barker, who appeared to live on another planet where all the hilarious things he was saying made perfect, logical, sensible sense.

My gf saw this sketch once and loved it. More recently, she was reading Dickens' "The Old Curiosity Shop," and couldn't help but think of this sketch when Little Nell died, due to how much ol' Charles put into the moment. I wonder if this was where Python got the idea?
