So after I finished Part 2, I loaded up my parry build save and realised I had to kill Margit for real. Instead of just steam rolling him in one with the 7 Estus I had, I decided to use it as an opportunity to try some no-hit fights and hopefully help you avoid the trap I fell into when I first learned to parry.
I forgot mention in the video, but I’m not a “No-Hit Runner”. I have no idea what the best No-Hit strategy is for Margit… Just in case anyone thinks I’m dunking on anyones strats!
Hope you enjoy the video!
It’s mental that I’ve had to set one of these up after only 1 week, but if you want to support the channel, you can do so at: www.paypal.me/thingfishy

So trueee. This actually has to do with sports psychology. While in a game If all you think about is pulling off a swing wether that be a golf club, tennis racket, baseball bat or a shield you are absolutely bound to fail. Tactics like you mentioned helps the athlete/player get out of their own head and into the game and focus on all aspects of the game as opposed to just hitting that parry

A huge pro-tip for parrying, especially against parriable bosses is that doing a critical hit is worse than just spamming light attacks in most cases. You'll do more damage and build up status effects like bleed or frost.

Yep, I’d say it’s a trade off on lower dps for a free healing window or focus another enemy down while they’re stunned. If you’re just standing there waiting to be able to hit them again after they stand up again you’re not being as efficient as you could be.

In fighting games we have a term called “frame kill”. It means: if you have to time something that has a set number of frames. It is much easier to time if you can find a button sequence, with roughly that many frames of animation, that times it for you instead of eyeballing it. So whenever I try to learn to parry long winding attacks I always try to find a sequence (most of the time a combination of R1, L1, sometimes I open the menu and close it again. Sometimes I cycle though my items/weapons. But most of the time if I can get one or several R1s in I’ll do it) that times the parry for me. I’m not a super awesome souls player or anything so I might just be taking a longer road to the same conclusion. But that’s how I learn to parry. I can never get it quite right when I’m following guides that says “parry when you see the hand moving towards you”. I guess I’m not a visual learner.

On most bosses, I would agree. On Margit, they've programmed him to attack you with his quick lightning dagger if you try to punish him immediately after he attacks, which is why all the honest/non-cheesy "no hit" kills of him go for parries and not much else. While he's winding up for that big overhead strike? Sure, go for a few slashes before you parry. He's already committed. But if you try to slash in between attacks, Margit in particular can give you trouble for that. Sometimes. Incosnistently. Which is what makes him so hard for new players.

Enemies don't typically change what they're doing in the middle of their action. So don't perform an action that gives them a big window to punish unless they performed an action that gives you a big window to punish. That is one big reason throwing knives should be used a lot more, especially with heavy weapons.
@hobbyist518
@hobbyist518 2 жыл бұрын
@@kamikeserpentail3778 They don't change mid-animation, but new attacks get buffered into their combo, or tacked on to the end. Personally, I hate it. Joseph Anderson has a great breakdown of why it was amazing for Sekiro, but sucks for souls games like Elden Ring. It gave Sekiro combat a zen-like rythm you could immerse yourself in, due to that game's style of countering attacks, but it ruins the rythm of Elden Ring, and can end up resulting in the player watching the boss flip around and have fun for 5 minutes before they FINALLY use one of the FEW attacks that give a safe chance to punish them. It's like the developers WANT you to use summons to distract them, or cheesy big bonks and lots of healing/health for optimal trades, if you're soloing. Or just go mage. Not fun, not skilled, not rewarding. There are still ways to fight them skillfully, but it's not NEARLY as intuitive as it used to be.

This is also true for the guard-counter style. Sure, guard-counters hit harder than normal attacks and can potentially open the enemy up for a crit, but guard-counter windows (especially against attacks that don't bounce off your shield) have to be larger than normal attack windows, and guard-counters also cost a lot more stamina. I'm often in a situation where I just blocked an attack, I could counter, but if I do I know I'll either run out of stamina or be hit mid-animation. Rather than pulling back and waiting for the next blockable attack, using a normal attack there can safely output more damage. Same thing with attacks that can't be safely blocked (or parried when looking at the parry style), a normal attack or two after evading or outspacing the attack can make a big difference. Defensive moves are just tools you can use to create new attack windows or enhance the attack windows you already have. Ultimately, what kills the enemy is your attacks during these windows. They don't have to be the dedicated follow-up to the defensive move you just performed.
@h0ll0w0ne
@h0ll0w0ne 2 жыл бұрын
I find a lot of people seem to use guard counter as defensive response but it can actually be very effectively used as an offensive technique if you're good at positioning and moving into the combo with your shield up at the right time. Let's you're getting attacked by a 3 hit combo. You could tank the whole thing and deplete your stamina OR you could stand just far enough for the first 2 attacks to woosh in front of your nose and take just 1 step forward to block and guard counter the last one at minimal stamina cost.

@@h0ll0w0ne Right! I do that sometimes when my brain doesn't shut down from the stress. Good advice, especially on mobs that have a slow recovery after a combo, or human-sized ones one-handing their weapon (the attack will usually bounce and interrupt them).

Thanks for watching, Michael. Haha, when I started my parry build in the last video and made the decision to continue it through, it dawned me that this is eventually gonna result in me doing a Melania parry fight video. That’s gonna be a rough few days 😂. It always depends on the specific enemy and your specific build. For me, some enemies are made easier buy rushing them and hitting them as much as possible before they pull out their more devasting attacks (Black knife assassins, Cleanrot knights), some are made easier by biding your time and waiting for specific openings (Crucible knights, Ertree Avatars), some are made easier by parrying them (Margit, Crucible knights), some are made harder if you try to parry them (Melania, Black Knife assassins). Figuring out which one is which is just a case a trial and error, and when you have, go with the path of least resistance. Hope that helps.

One thing you missed was the jumping attack after the parry. It takes timing but it's a massive chunk of damage you can land in the very second he comes out of his I frames. And if you do time it right you can still get 2 R1s in before you need to roll or parry. You could also charge an R2 but that is riskier and you need to pay closer attention to spacing.

Double the dps. That's why I use a parry as a tactic for having a clean duel, not the primary goal. I struggle a lot with the parry timing when I am ONLY parrying, but I find i pull off insane roll into attack into parry combos when I'm just playing and letting my muscle memory take over. Another tip for people learning the timing... When I was learning elden ring timing, I accidentally pressed L2 instead of B, and got the parry off. Something clicked for me then, and if you think of it as the same as the dodge timing but with a different button, it will help a lot. I try to dodge so the middle of the roll is connected with the attack as it would have hit the character, for reference.
@bobxbaker
@bobxbaker 2 жыл бұрын
great tip, i've been thinking about that every now and then, but i think it's more so the luxury of having really fast weapons as people tend to spam buttons and if you're spamming your parry will come out several attacks later than needed because it stores inputs. but for fast weapons that's less of an issue as the attacks come out almost as fast as you press the button, but for slower weapons it's much more of a commitment and not only that, you have to predict timing a lot more with slow weapons in wether how fast the enemy attacks compared to your attacks and if you're able to attack at all or if you can sneak an attack in, in which you tend to just look at the enemy and try to read their input over actually trying to read and immediately attack as a response to knowing how many attacks you can get in because you might not even be allowed to without taking a hit for it immediately right after. but with that said, it's definitly something worth taking into consideration to add attacks during a slow swing to even perhaps time a parry right after as you would a dodge.
@spacedoohicky
@spacedoohicky 2 жыл бұрын
You could use some ashes of war on slower weapons. Because those skills often stun which would leave an opening for the next parry. Or you can use a skill like bloodhound's finesse which would give you two hits, and close the gap in the second attack to lead into a parry while doing bleed damage. There is a way with slower weapons if you're creative.
@bobxbaker
@bobxbaker 2 жыл бұрын
@@spacedoohicky definitly, but i was merely thinking of bosses. but yeah i'm gonna try and go for a high poise, high damage negation build instead of my usual rolly polly ways, mostly so that i can use a weapon like the night rider flail and poise through hits while swinging wildly with it or a rapier and become the godskin noble rapier boss and just attack away with relentless stabs. but i'm also currently playing a bit with greatshields too so right now i'm just using a great shield to poke with rapiers from behind it or use my flail guard counter/ shieldbash and then swing before i get a big poise boy armor so i can either choose to swing/stab wildly or parry.

I figured this out when facing margit by myself. I was running bandit with a +3 great knife at level 15, so the damage was pathetic (around 33 dmg per hit). My only real source of damage was parrying and the bleed. So to optimize bleed procs, I would weave in as many attacks as I could before a parry. Sadly, nothing could stop him from going into phase 2, and since I was very underleveled I just had to pray he didn't start with any of his 2 unparryable chain openers. I still do the standing still thing, since I have switched into a katana (because it has so many more advantages than a dagger, only real downside is the attack recovery), and cannot afford to attack as often as with a dagger.

This fight is well designed in the sense it teaches you stick attacks = parry, glowing attacks = dodge. Another way to look at this is normal attacks = parry/block, ashes of war or big jumps = dodge or intercept if able. I wish From would take this one step further. Make a unique visual language for good parry timing for example. It wouldn't have to be a 'glow red when you can parry' type mechanic either. Just like when you cast a school of magic a symbol appears first to inform you what it is, they could do the same with weapons. Sharp lines = slashing weapons, explosions or 'air bursts' = blunt weapons and the presence/shape of their particle effect would inform the player how to parry or what to block. I think the entire series just about relies way too heavily on memorization of patterns, and in some ways that takes away from the feeling of being a warrior and cautiously sizing each other up before striking/the intuition of when to strike.

This actually helps a lot. I’ve been playing these games since Demons, and though I’ve never been very good at parrying, I AM very good at rolling and timing blocks I think this is simply because parrying is optional, whereas rolling (at least with my play style) has always been mandatory. If I just look at parrying as the same thing as dodging (with a slightly tighter window), something I’m doing only when I have to in between normally dealing damage… I think that’s the right frame of mind for me. I think I’ll go very light, dex, parry heavy my next playthrough. That or focusing on archery. That’s the other build I want to try. I guess I could combine them
@Zonic3451

I’d suggest archery out of boss fights, and parrying in boss fights. Of course, if you wanna run away for some easy damage on a boss/wanna parry to conserve arrows that’s still fine, but I’d say archery would be a super good supplement for ranged attacks.

Malenia is great for this style as well, you can usually sneak in like 2-3 attacks between parries depending on the weapon. Stopping her chains right at the first strike also trivializes the whole fight, instead of 2-3 rolls to avoid full combo you just smack her with the shield and continue as if nothing happen. Makes you feel like a bully until she puts you in your place with waterflow.

Thanks, David! I’m still figuring that out myself to be honest. I still haven’t figured out the relationship between a weapons critical stat and AR that dictates it’s riposte damage. In my first playthrough I was using heavy weapons on my strength/faith build and getting some big numbers on the ripostes. On my parry character, I’m gonna try levelling dex and arcane for a good bleed build and use weapons with high critical stats like an infused Miserichorde for ripostes. On my DS3 builds, I would always have an infused dagger to weapon swap to after a successful parry, so going to try that in Elden Ring. Thanks for watching!

I created a crit build a couple of weeks ago and recently finished the game with it. Don't know how similar you might be looking to make it, but based it off Misericorde and Flame of the Redmanes Art of War for the stagger. Strength attribute mostly. Throw in the HP and FP regen talismans on crit, plus whatever else suits your boat. Had the least trouble of a playthrough I've ever had. Only ones that were more difficult were things that couldn't be critted, i.e. Night's Cavalry when mounted. Most everything else just gets annihilated. Dragons would be completely stunlocked. Was really weak to casters if they could keep a little range on you, or to multiple, difficult to stagger enemies (i.e. 2 Crucible Knights, Leyndell Knights, etc). or anythign that could roll or fly out of the cone of fire. Got the idea for the build from a YT vid, don't remember which one but probably not hard to find.

I see , when you think about parrying the entire boss fight you start to 'slow down/second guess yourself', causing you to get the timing wrong or overall lose the ability to parry correctly , but when you think about it only when the enemy is doing something parryable (if that's a word) then you have a better chance of getting the parry and attack (maybe, idk but that's how I've beaten the game multiple times parrying). attack, when the boss does something parryable, try to get that timing down and parry, attack, then repeat. That's what I've gotten from this video, am I wrong or did I miss something

Not only can you psyche yourself out just waiting for the attack, but it’s actually harder to time than if you just finished your second swing and only have a small window of time to hit the parry. Less margin of error I suppose.

The interesting thing about this problem is that it is not even that new. As long as video games have had counterattack options, there have been players who struggle to keep attacking and playing the game normally because they are anxiously waiting for the enemy's attack. I'm sure many in the DMC 3 circles recall the struggle of using Royal Guard effectively without just sitting in place, or of using the Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa in Bayonetta without just mashing the analog stick towards the enemy repeatedly. It is both strange and intriguing how the addition of a counter mechanic messes with a player's head, and how it creates confusion when a player initially has the strategy that either leans towards playing more offensively and trading hits versus playing defensively and only attacking with a visible opening.

30 secs is pretty good, but I killed him in 5 secs the other day. Here's how I did it: 1) Play through the entire game, level up to SL150, obtain max upgraded OP weapons. 2) Start NG+ 3) Run straight at Margit and spam OP weapon art right in his face, with no need to dodge or parry. 4) RIP Margit. The best part is, my method requires no actual skill whatsoever 😁

Man, you'ld probably love Aikido. All Aikido does is practice parrying and counter attacking/riposting(jn aikido the counter is usually a joint lock, throw or pin bu the principal is the same). You usually stat in aikido doing what you said in the beginning, you just sit there waiting for an attack but, as you get better, you start to learn how to provoke the attack that you prefer to counter. You usually do this by launching small attacks of your own while you are waiting fro something to counter. (again, talking about aikido here.) In fact, I got into Aikido before I ever did Dark Souls and got into Dark souls because it let me move like how I was used to in Aikido. Just to give you an idea, the place you most want to be in aikido is usually right behind them. That or right in front of them after you broke their balance with a parry. =)

Oh man, this is so applicable on the guard counter as well. I have been hiding behind my greatshield like a turtle only trying to find a good time to throw out a guard counter, what i instead should have done is to throw out some well timed R1 attacks, block - followed by guard counter, and possible chain attack if applicable... Elden ring does put more emphasis on R2 attacks, and i've tried to change up my fighting style to accommodate that, but i have gone too far and i've started to neglect the R1:s.. Thanks for a very informative video!

You see people who play with parry focus is mostly seeking the satisfaction not the speed of you defeating the foe . . . The seer feeling when you heard that loud sound and the knock back of the enemy and not to mention the free high damage stab(mostly) is just pure bliss just like when you manage to fulfill all your weird fetish . . .LOL And the fact parrying in elden ring is slightly harder not like sekiro is the more reason to master it . . .

This is where the Rapier/Medium shield with Carrian retaliation is incredibly nice. If you're not confident with your parries or your timing, just hold L1, Poke him with R1 (you will be in guard, but hiding behind the shield), then when you see an attack coming that you can parry, hit L2 with L1 still being held. If you miss, pretty good chance you'll still be guarding, you'll still be doing some damage from the pokes, and if you land a parry...great! At the same time, the Rapier has really high crit scaling of 130 (compared to 110 of most daggers, and 10 less than the misercorde)...so overall, really good!

It's really weird, I focused on parrying and getting the timing right early in game, like in Limgrave, and I had gotten pretty damn good at it. But as soon as I started two-handing my weapon I pretty much abandoned it altogether. I hate that it's a weapon art and not something that all weapons and shields are capable of at all times. But I want to get back into it. Luckily, I have the STR to one hand pretty much any weapon effectively.

Considering for me it’s best to describe parrying as a kind of rythm especially thanks to sekiro I like to do little sounds for the parry catch like the dagger is eeeeeeyaaah, buckler is hoothah , regular shield is “mmaah” than get hit alot so i can see when the attack registers on me while whoever is doing their thing then sing my little rythm sounds in sync with when the attack hits

This would help while being summoned for coop as well. Attacking an opening might keep the enemy aggro on you which would make the parry easier with multiple players.
@tommydashed4205
@tommydashed4205 2 жыл бұрын
Parrying bosses as a summoned phantom in coop is a pointless endeavor. You *can* do it but often times the boss slightly changes angles because of switching aggro and while you don't take damage, you just parry the air. Then when they don't do this and swing like normal, half the time they still hit and stagger you even though they were parried (likely because of ping) and then you have no time to hit the riposte.
@spacedoohicky
@spacedoohicky 2 жыл бұрын
@@tommydashed4205 I've had spotty success with it. It depends on the host, and how aggressive they are. With three players including myself it's even harder to get a parry in. A lot of times I just end up spamming regular attacks to give the boss status effects. A frozen Godrick is an easy Godrick.
