A third tip, sometimes you should wait to dodge or not dodge at all. Like if you get pancaked, there are some enemies that will catch you if you immediately stand up. But if you wait a moment and then pop up, their chain misses and you are clear. Also, many attacks can be ducked under or avoided via spacing or positioning. This will not only increase your dps, but it can also open up other opportunities in a fight. You can often stay closer to enemies by avoiding one attack in a chain then dodging the other, when otherwise you would need to just run away because it's a roll catch chain.

Brilliant observations. I am newborn to Elden Ring, but played all previous games in the franchise. I watched my son the other day ducking under blows by casting. At first I thought he was cancelling after casting, but if memory serves, he said he was just holding down the button. Either way so many blows never connected, but just went right over his head. One bit of advice I learned the other day is avoid rolling twice. Of course I learned it the hard way. Heard it ignored it, died a few times then tried it. I noticed Thingfishy rarely if ever rolls twice.

This is great advice. I find I have two ways of playing Elden Ring, focused and unfocused. Unfocused it my state when I am in areas I am familiar with, where I am not expecting any real difficulty. Focused is my state in new areas, particularly dungeons where you do not get flasks returned when you kill groups of enemies. Since I know I could potentially run out of flasks, I am much more focused on avoiding damage. Focused is also how my first attempt at a boss goes, or maybe few attempts. However, if I die a couple of times I am more likely to become unfocused, where I am throwing damage at the boss and hoping to get lucky and kill it before it kills me. I can see this in my results, where I'll often do quite well in the first fight, die, and then be unable to get close to where I was on subsequent attempts. Taking a quick break is a good way to regain focus. Only hitting once is another way. If I could fix my controller where the attack button could only be pressed once every 5 seconds I would probably be a much better player. When avoiding hits, rolling forward to the side of the boss often works better than rolling away. I am constantly surprised by how many hits I avoid by rolling right into it. With many larger enemies, if you roll right into them their attack passes over you. I was really struggling to avoid those annoying inquisitor virgins because they always seem to catch me with their hits or their stupid grab attack, until I realized it was when I roll, not where I roll, that mattered. I do better rolling into them or diagonally to one side than I do rolling away or directly sideways. Once again, focus makes all the difference.

Another tip for boss fights- if you are in that type of encounter where you gotta settle in for the long haul, ten plus attempts territory, TURN THE MUSIC OFF. It is unreal (and testament to the quality of the soundtracks of these games) the extent to which the music can get you flustered and greedy. Just discovering your vids mate, great stuff.

Dude, your videos are fantastic. This is my first From Software game and it's great to have such thorough breakdowns of combat tactics. I'd been sandbagging on attempting Margit for multiple days now just due to all the hype around his difficulty, but after watching your parry series I decided what the hell, might as well give it a go. Grabbed a small shield, spent 15 mins practicing on some soldiers, and after maybe 6 or 7attempts Margit folded like a cheap suit, and the combat felt great. Just wanted to say thanks because your videos were a huge help. I'd actually tried parrying and written it off because I was using a medium shield and didn't know better, but now I'm loving the play style.

Fighting against two bosses, bosses that take up the entire screen, and bosses that move large distances incredibly quick do not allow for fair assessments of their capabilities within reason, especially when you take into account how much damage everything does in this game. The royal revenant, the godskin duo, and the fire giant are some of the standout examples. At the end of the day, I don’t find it satisfying or worth it to try and fight enemies in this game with this kind of methodical approach because they don’t fight fair. Of course it’s helpful to realize that you shouldn’t spam attacks or heal as soon as your health gets low. But when you’re trying your best to dodge and learn but you’re given only one or two mistakes until you have to restart the whole thing, it’s going to be really hard to keep fighting “methodically “ instead of figuring out a way to out cheese the enemy.

Awesome video, thank you - I was looking forward to this. The suggestions are things I basically already knew, yet somehow am consistently unable to apply. I've played Elden Ring for 300 hours now, still without beating it (I restarted after Radahn because I felt I was overlevelled, and just recently beat him again on my 2nd NG) so I have plenty of patience, yet somehow in the moment of any fight, all my fingers want to do is spam the buttons. Draconic tree sentinel the whole challenge is 2nd phase. I didn’t know what to do. I ended up cheesing him with the poison, which was still fun felt like being a ninja assassin. The biggest problem I have is with guys who suddenly go into hyper armor. For example, banish knights in farum azula suddenly go into whirlwind mode and it’s so hard to avoid them after that, they just keep going at you over and over with invincible aoe attacks. Even if I dodge I still get hit by the aoe.

Commander Niall (mountain fortress boss) was one of the most frustrating and hardest because his windows for attack are small and at odd moments. Like he comes down with a slam attack or a fast lunge and you successfully dodge it but then he has a frost or two more attacks after. Even if you stay out of those you have the window for one hit... My strategy was summon the 6 wallshield guys +7 or +9 then immediately sprint and jump attack and a couple swings to annihilate the dual wielding knight right away) leaving only the shield knight to deal with the shield guys(leave them alone). Now focus on Niall b/c In this state Niall doesnt do much or any big atta ks iirc, ice or lightning attacks. He saunters around, swings, pokes at you and sometimes buffs the remaining knight only swings. But since his knight is still alive he's in this non-aggressive mode. So you can just hammer more on him as long as the other knight is alive. Even after the knight dies he tries to attack the shield guys but you can just stay behind them and jump hit him or go behind him and do some super attack. They'll block his spear attacks. I think it's a great strat if you can kill the dual wielding knight within 10 seconds We killed Niall before he even started phase 2. Goddamn that felt amazing.

I’m starting to use incantations only in the battle arena, walking in there with a sacred seal in each hand. Seeing as incantations specifically have no blocking/rebound abilities (unlike sorceries that have Thops’s barrier and Eternal Darkness) I’ve resorted to panic rolling every time a mage gets cocky and starts spamming! When I had a sword equipment I was supremely confident, often going in there with no shield and winning a bunch of times. Yet mages casting sorceries at a distance inspired me to play them at their own ranged combat game. I’ve noticed its in part the cast time for my lack of confidence, yet I’m determined to try my hand at incantations only in the arena! This should be a valuable lesson!

One thing I've also noticed in elden ring unlike a lot of souls games would be elements of the enemy's attacks. A lot of the enemies weapons may apply status effects, but all of the initial damage can be blocked with a 100% physical block shield. It's a part of the game that I personally like that encourages players to do more guard counters and do whatever they can to NOT get hit. Just thought I would mention that.

That's a smart player I was struggling against a boss similar to Astel just the other day. I struggle against most giant bosses in general because I have trouble reaching them with my hammer swings, they jump and teleport around A LOT and on top of that they sometimes turn around slighty and my swings just barelly go between their legs/limbs or under their hitboxes. Whenever I find this to be the main difficulty of an encounter I swallow my pride, throw the paladin thematic out the window and embrace the Rotten Breath. I might spend half the encounter chasing after them and missing swings but the red corona doesn't care about hitboxes.

This is great advice, and I appreciate it, but I also just ran into the wall with the Misbegotten Warrior and the Crucible Knight in Caelid. It seems that I need to dump on the dps to down the misbegotten and get solo with the knight and I am finding it difficult to be that aggressive when he's so fast and slashy. I can land some parries, but he doesn't go into counter guard break until you get something like 3 of those it seems. Perhaps I'm under leveled at 50?

Yeah, Misbegotten and Crucible is a real toughy. I haven’t actually done it at sensible level yet, as keep forgetting and activating the festival before I go there. The strat is definitely to out DPS them and get rid of Misbegotten before crucible spawns. Level 50 sounds pretty sensible as that’s about the level I’ve been fighting Radahn, but don’t be scared of levelling up more. I find it a lot easier to learn a fight when you’re stronger than you need to be for it. Thanks for watching!
