My daughter was told by a local shop we have used exclusively for 15 years that her engine was wrecked, needed a new engine, $4500, car was bought for 3K, 2 years ago. I did research, found this great set of vids, and called around here in MA. Cheapest quote I got was $1200 plus parts. I did this for $190 in parts, Gates kit including a water pump, new upper & lower mounts, new alt belt & a radiator cap. Bought $300+ in new tools(new impact wrench, Torx bits, cam lock wrench, and a 3 jaw puller) Took me 2 months of Saturdays, didn't disconnect the AC and some of the reassembly (Cast plate, belt covers and power steering pump) was a puzzle but worked it out. Thanks so much for this great work! This 2007 PT Cruiser is still a PITA and POS but at least she can drive it again until car prices go back to normal! No way I would have tried this without your step-by-step instruction.

***** Thanks Don.....actually this is a one man show, me and only me. Glad the video helped. It seems it creates a lot of positive response. My hats off to you for having performed the repair.....its not an easy job at all and certainly something I wouldn't recommend someone doing at home but you prove once again that this is the reason for the videos.....to help those who are welling but may not know exactly what the steps are. Thanks again for watching and make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.

Very, very well presented especially the time spent explaining how and when to raise or lower the engine, and the importance to properly position the timing marks. Watching the videos in reverse allowed me to put it back together after the successful installation with zero fasteners remaining.... Thank you for your ability to teach.

I can't thank you enough for this video series. I was putting off dealing with the timing belt in my '04 PT Cruiser. It finally snapped at 204,000 miles (idling in a parking lot) and I had it towed home. Following the videos, I was able to complete the job in my driveway on two consecutive Saturdays. Much better than anything else on the Internet and much clearer than the shop manual instructions. Started right up and runs like a top.

I don't know how to thank you, Motor City Mechanic, but I'll thank you a lot in words. The water pump on my 2005 PT Cruiser sprang a leak, while away from home. I thought I would fix it myself so I babied it home, stopping several times to refill the radiator. When I got home and popped the hood, I realized I was in trouble - everything was too crowded! I didn't know where to start. So I did a search on KZbin and found a video of a guy doing the same thing, but he said it was one of the worst jobs he'd ever done - took him three days! But after seeing your 7-part video series, I decided to bite the bullet and attempt this job, seein' as how I did not have the money to spend on a mechanic. Though it was difficult for many reasons: lack of tools, parts to replace (both upper and lower engine torque arms had broken rubber), some took several trips to find, no spindle socket to remove the wheel lugs, etc. Additionally, I am a pastor, so I was constantly being interrupted with other important things, including people's needs, multiple church services to preach in. I say all that to say, I just completeted the job and the car runs great! I followed your videos over and over, forward and backward. Though it took me a whole week from start to finish, I had success. Great videos!!!!!!! Superbly done! I really appreciated you indicating the size of the bolts and nuts along the way. I also appreciated the respectful manner in which you presented yourself - no cussing, no crude language, etc. I have asked the Lord to bless you for your help to this servant of His since I do not even know your name. Thanks again! I highly recommend people subscribe to your videos if they intend to do much mechanical work. Yours are the best I have seen!

Those kind words are greatly appreciated. Alot of people run from this job including seasoned mechanics. To me I dont know why because once you have done one or more.....it becomes a great money making job. I certainly have done worse jobs. You certainly tool on a big job and your not a trained mechanic....so that says alot about your skills. My hats off to you. Thanks again for watching and for taking the time to comment on each of the parts.

I wouldnt hesitate to own one.....and actually its the first car my daughter is wanting to get to learn how to drive. Thanks Anthony for commenting and for using my videos to take on that job. Take your time and double/triple check the timing marks before going back with the parts. Make sure to subscribe as well.

I neglected to mention that this entire task was accomplished with complete and total success! The only issues being is that took me a helluvalot longer than your average wrench turnin' youngster! I'm 52 and I have arthritis real bad in one knee and the other ankle. So it was a little exhausting when I was working on the timing marks and the alignment of that big steel plate. So it was work from the bottom, lift/drop the motor, work from the top, lift/drop the motor, work from the bottom and repeat. Up, down, up, down... It wore me the hell out so I could only 'enjoy' working on the car a couple hours a day. So needless to say it sadly took me weeks instead of days. So despite that minor hang up, my car has been purring like a kitten ever since! Thanx again man!@@MotorCityMechanic

I I have watched your videos a number of times. To get this process down, before starting on this timing belt water pump replacement. They are very good, two things you might add which I had confusion with. The three leg puller did not realize you had to have one with the the rod went into the crank pulley. Therefore I try to pull it with ordinary three leg puller. When I went and rented one and saw how it worked came over easily. Another thing I did not remove the steel bracket for the stabilizer bar or the AC lines. I've managed to get everything off without. You might add the motor has to be really lifted very high. I found that out, and the cast bracket came easily. I was replacing the radiator the same time, really opened up a lot of room. I have been twisting wrenches for about 60 years, working for a defense contractor for 43 is a master mechanic, on everything you can imagine from putting diesel engines and experimental tanks cruise missile letters in B1 B2 B 52 bombers. And I've never had a mechanical process to Replace these Items as hard as I ever had 60 years of twisting wrenches. You deserve a very lot of credit, for this excellent series of videos on this terrible terrible difficult job. I've heard Prices as high as $1800 just to replace the belt. Some people junk car rather then pay the price because the cars not worth that much. But some running cheap small cars like this are worth plenty to the owner. Thank you very much. Jim Wagner

Plus everyone runs scared so you usually not have competition when it comes to who wants it. Once the video gets up loaded I cant make changes without starting it as a new video and then all the views...comments...etc are gone. Wish it was easier to add items to the video. I tried to include as much as I could be still know that afterwards a few more items would have helped as well. I thank you very much for the very detailed and concise step by step tutorial videos. I was especially thankful for your reply to the comment concerning damage to the engine from continually attempting to start engine. I would not have gone through the trouble of replacing the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc. if it were not for that explanation about it not damaging the engine from trying to start it. I myself assumed there would have been damage to the engine as well with the timing belt breaking..... Now, here's is why I'm so thankful, and this really pissed me off after reading the reply to that comment. I had my PT cruiser towed to LITHIA CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE of Eureka, CA. They inspected the problem and told me the timing belt broke and would cost $1,600 bucks to repair, but because the timing belt broke, it most likely also damaged the valves and other internal components. And the quote for everything repaired was $3,200 dollars! I told them to not do anything and had the car towed to my house. I then went online and purchased a timing belt repair kit with everything that should normally be replaced when changing the belt. Total cost for the repair, $75. I will be having a serious conversation with LITHIA AUTO! I don't know if you have any authority towards this situation, but thought I should let you know there's a dealership out there ripping people off. Again, Thank you for your professionally made how to videos. Your Awesome!!!!!!! Johnny
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I think its not the shop or dealer. Reading the service info it states that it is an interference engine and that damage can occur. Usually thats when the mechanics warn or tell customers of more then likely engine damage. Yes it can get damaged if you install the belt out of timed or if the belt was to jump numerous teeth for sure. Seems that they are just misinformed. I learned that lesson myself over the years as I did more and more of these repairs and started noticing that no damage was ever found and then it made since to me. Otherwise if yuo go buy what your taught you would say engine damage. That is one of the main reasons I did the video to prove to people mainly thru the comments like yours that its not that I am just lucky.....comment after comment tells how people were told the same and in the end.....no damage was done. Too many cars have been condemned because of this when all it needed was the $75.00 worth of parts as you mentioned. So I dont know who to blame......its a grey area that I have been able to see past, others havent at this stage. I dont think its always done on purpose or that they are trying to rip someone off.....not always. I am glad that you stopped and found the video and attempted the repair to see what would happen. Hopefully more people read these comments and learn from them as well. Thanks again Johnny for the feedback

this series helped me a lot with that problem. Thanks. I have a current issue with the 2007 pt cruiser. My wife's car. The neutral safety switch is bad. I have taken off the pan, filter, the bolts holding the valve body (which is two pieces), the problem is that I cannot figure out how to get the second piece out. It is connected to a cable that is holding that piece under tension, I have moved it some but not enough to get the switch changed out. There is a rod as well that sticks up into the housing. Daryl

Too many shops and mechanics condemn these vehicles because they dont understand how the engines operate. It states that it can bend valves....but the only time it can do that is if someone physically placed the cams in the wrong position. Otherwise when the belt breaks....the cams go to a sweet spot and have saved. Glad that you didnt listen to them and took on this job. It isnt the easiest but as you saw.....very much do-able. I just received a comment that for some reason doesn't show up know....guess they deleted it for some reason. We what was mentioned was: Good video as far as replacement goes but he really should not have been cranking the engine over. With a suspected timing belt failure that's just begging for valve damage and or damage to the engine. So I thought I would reply back to the comment: Thanks for the comment and opinion. So let me paint a picture if I may. Timing belt broke while driving down the road.....did it do damage to the engine or valve train on this 2.4 liter engine, ummm no. Customer now sits on the side of the road and tries over and over to try to get the engine to restart but doesn't because they don't realize the belt broke.....did it do damage to the engine or valve train on this 2.4 liter engine, ummm no. Tow truck driver tries to start.....did it do damage to the engine or valve train on this 2.4 liter engine, ummm no. I receive the vehicle and proceed to see why it wont start. I attempt to crank it with no affect.....did it do damage to the engine or valve train on this 2.4 liter engine, ummm no. I then proceed to decide to film the belt replacement and show what to look for and how to check for a broken belt by spinning the engine over.....did it do damage to the engine or valve train on this 2.4 liter engine, ummm no. So, to respond to your comment, I know from experience that on this engine.....have no fear, no damage will be caused by what I or the customer has tried by cranking the engine. Keep in mind....a 2.4 liter. This doesn't apply to other vehicles or different engines. Food for thought also.....even if it was an interference engine, damage would have been done once the belt broke and if not, then surely when the customer tries to crank it so as to get out of traffic or off the side of the road. Rest assure the mechanic will not be the cause, by then its been damaged,.

One of the best guides I have ever seen / used to tackle an unknown repair. Started teardown & noticed only two variations thus far; A/C line junction point is right in front of timing belt cover. Lines from junction to firewall are not moveable. Guess I just work around them. Also I just bought my timing belt/water pump kit & noticed that the tensioner is slightly different for my 2001 PT. It has a hook/handle sticking out. Any tips on setting correct tension on that version? There's nothing in directions & I don't have a factory service manual. Again thank you so much for your videos! Great job! MOPAR or no car !!!

Hey David, thanks for the video. Your great at explaining the process! One question. How do you recommend holding the harmonic balancer/crankshaft, pulley in place to torque it down? The Haynes manual recommends wedging something between the pulley and the block but that doesn’t seem to be working for me.

Thanks for taking the time to post these videos! I love the detail in them. However, I do have a couple of questions. First off, is there a time interval regardless of mileage in which the TB should be replaced on these cars? Second, I've heard that while there may be no valve to piston interference on these engines, there is valve to valve interference, which would mean that if the belt breaks, and the cams spin out of sync as a result, they could slap each other and bend them. Is there any truth to this?

hello there was reading about a way to make those motor mounts on those P.T Cruisers last longer --tell me what you think - A trick I learned on the SRT-4's is to take the mounts off the car. Buy a tube of windshield urethane to install windshields. This is available at most automotive stores for about $15. Clean up the rubber on the mounts with some alcohol where the holes are. Lay the mounts on some wax paper, then fill the holes up with the urethane and let set for at least 12 hours if not longer so that the urethane sets up. This stiffens the mounts and helps keep them from tearing as badly, especially with a manual or turbo car
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
I have even heard of people using small sections of rubber hose and silicon as well. They sell urethane inserts if I remember correctly. I have a set on my neon due to multiple mount bushing failures. The only downside is that in some cases you feel more of the engine vibrations at idle. I just checked and they sale the kits for about $15.00 as well. +MotorCity Mechanic I have verified that it is coming out of that area by the water pump and the timing belt. From underneath the car I can see coolant flowing out around the base of the harmonic balancer. The head gasket is blown as well. Just hope the heads aren't going to be warped. This is going to be a big big project for me!
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
Alexander Kimani I would try to keep the coolant system in tack while taking the timing cover/timing belt off so that you can still pressure test the system to see exactly where the leak is once you have access to look closer. Curious what makes you think the headgasket is the issue as well? When ran extremely hot....I haven't seen headgasket issues....it ends up with a warped head. If the head is the issue....I have seen them for about $200.00-$250.00 online. Having the, shaved can be okay if not out much....if too much then the head will need replacement.

Changed timing belt, timing marks seemed right on. No go. What should I try next? What's a common oversight? We even turned the harmonic balancer 180 degrees. 1. Do you need a jig to keep the cams aligned while putting the new belt on? 2. Could it be that the timing could be off a hair b/c of...? 3. Could spark plugs be the culprit? 4. Stale gas?
@MotorCityMechanic

saintsamaritan there is nothing needed to align the marks in the gears. I need to start with a few questions first if you have the time. What was the reason for replacing the belt....was it broke, was it due by mileage, or was it replaced because you thought possibly related to the no start?

@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
I can honestly say that I never have had to replace the center mount in the frame. They seem to hold up well. I assume its because of its location and the fact that it doesn't have much movement. The upper and lower torque mounts are farther away from the engine center line so that do get more movement. Thanks for the comment and make sure to subscribe if you haven't all ready.

if you have everything tore down during a water pump or timing belt replacement, then it isn't hard at that point. but as far as price.....I haven't replaced one yet. Its the center of the engine rotation as far as mounts so it seems to hold up well. The neons had the same mount back around 2001 I believe and there was a bulletin about vibration. Excellent tutorial, you have a gift. Saved me a lot of headaches and I have been pulling wrenches since 1969. As far as turning over engine with a broken belt, that's fine if you have a no interference engine. Easy enough to check that out using Gates web site to identify if your engine is interference type or not. For the novice or back yard mechanic, turning other engines over could cause damage. For this engine you are spot on. Cheers PS my biggest headache is getting that dam big main mount plate to clear! Shitty design.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
I hear alot from people about the plate. I dont know if its how high I am lifting the engine or what but I dont have real issues with it. Then I have done too many of these to remember. They list this as an interference engine but I have found that the cams spring to what I call a safe spot when the belt breaks. Now if you time it up wrong then yes.....piston says hello to valve train and then the valve train aint happy. Thanks for the comment Gordon and make sure to subscribe if you havent already.

The engine will not run if the timing belt is broke. It running hot will be caused by something else. I would make sure there are no obvious coolant leaks by pressure testing the cooling system. Also make sure that the radiator fans are working.

If you can do a non-turbo....the turbo will not be much different. Its the same procedure.

Hello.You ok? I need your knowledge for the pt's. My Pt cruiser is 2003 , 2.0 manual . The car is on the timing kit change. The mechanic guy bit worried about the metallic noise inside the engine . Near the crankshaft area , under the valve cover. This noise sounds like similar to the exhaust heater shield. And this noise before just about 1500-2000rpm low gear change( grandpa style ) come on and just few sec heard. But now after the kit change when you starting the engine , this noise is on now. What you think? I know , it's difficult explaining here but need few idea. Thanks ;)

Trapeznaci I have heard a similar sound before on a 2.0 Neon engine. I could even get the noise to happen when rotating the engine by hand. I took the timing belt off and rechecked and then noise was still there and sounded like it was coming from the oil pump area. Customer declined any further work so I didnt get to narrow it any further. I havent had the chance to get my hands on a 2.0 PT.....always the 2.4 liter. I do remember reading a service bulletin about a noise that sounds something similar to what your describing. Here is a link to another website that shows the bulletin: @2003@2003@2003@2003

I would replace it due to time. The material will break down over the years and get dry rotted. I personally would. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe

Dig the channel! your videos are the best ive seen when it comes to my car, 08 cruiser. i watched the videos cause I had the same symptoms with my car. i changed the cam sensor and the shaft sensor and the car didnt start. thats when i watched countless videos and stumbled on to yours which are a god send to us home mechanics. so, i got down to as far as removing the timing belt cover and was shocked, and pissed off quite frankly, to see that the timing belt was still in tact!!!! i dont get it. do you have any idea as to what could possibly be the problem?? i so greatly appreciate any and all responses i can get.

John Conner Hey John, sorry about the delay. I always recommend looking at the cam gears thru the access hole in the video before removing the covers. Can save the hassle of tearing things apart and finding nothing wrong. I have seen where the belt can still be intact but the crank portion of the belt had the cogs completely ripped of the belt so that the belt was smooth at the crankshaft so that it couldn't turn. I would check to see if any codes as well. That could tell us a lot. Otherwise checking some of the basics such as fuel pressure, spark, and injector pulse is recommended. Thanks for all the comments and for the question.

Thanks for the reply! Looks like it is the belt and I think it's the issue that you described in your reply. However, I can't get the harmonic balancer off no used a Chrysler balancer pulley and I think I broke it. I had it cranked all the way to where the bolt was flush with the puller body and it still didn't pop the balancer off. I backed out the bolt of the puller and the rod was fused into the bolt. I tried another Chrysler puller and when I set it up and cranked the bolt it went all the way flush as the last one and, yet again, the balancer did not come off. Could I have possible put a hole in the block??

@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
John Conner The center shaft on your puller may not be long enough to bottom out in the crankshaft. I have an assortment of long bins or even ground down 3/8 drive extensions that I use to fit a verity of vehicles and engines. If the threaded shaft is bottomed out on the puller then the center pin/shaft that you inserted into the crank is too short. You may need to come up with something enough but not thick enough to damage the threads in the crankshaft. Belt way to tell about the belt is that inspection block in the timing cover like I mention in the start of the video to see if the cam gears move while someone tries to spin the engine over.

djradd32 Another PT with no bent valves....imagine that haha. Glad it worked out great for you. Getting the timing right on the first try doesn't happen for me each time either so give yourself some credit. I know professional mechanics that run and hide like little girls when its time to do one. Great job man. Sounds like Windsor is a long ways from Georgia.....but I will keep it in mind. So finish up the repair and relax....you done well. Feel free to rub the no bent valves into everyones face when you see them as well.

Just some advice for people before they start on this repair, you are gonna need a long reach puller for the harmonic balancer. A regular puller won't work. Also if you are gonna use an installer to put the balancer back on you need a long reach installer with a m12x1.75 bolt in the kit.

I pulled the casing a little bit the belt wasn't snapped but I could tell the tensioner was bad when I applied a little pressure I went ahead and purchased a timing kit (with water pump and tensioner) thanks for replying so quick
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 4 жыл бұрын
@@eddyleyva4478 Sometimes the belt wont be broke but the teeth on the belt will be gone usually around the crankshaft pulley. You can put some pain marks on the cam gear or belt and have someone spin the engine over to see if the marks move....if they dont then the belt has failed.

why is my 09 pt cruiser over heating i changed the tthermat but it still wants to run hot what could it be
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
First thing I would do is check the radiator fan to make sure both speeds work. If they are okay and you have no leaks/low on coolant then depending on how hot it was ran....it may have done some damage to the head and possible warped it.
