Finally a video where someone took the time to explain thoroughly.

I really like your videos. Well explained and they really help to understand the systems. Saves getting ripped off on repairs which is easy to happen with this brand. Thanks.

Great Video, Nathan. I need to do the front suspension on my E39 Touring soon as well and this is a great resource. I would be interested in how you go about curing an SRS airbag light. I also have one and the SRS code reader I got off Ebay doesn't seem to help me much.

Be careful these EBAY Kits did not pass the inspection over here in EU, you can also buy them, but it is said that they are super-bad. Best thing you can replace it with are Lemförder.

To lower the hub from the shocks, there is a official special tool which is a modified bolt with a oval shape/rectangular shape which you place between the hinge of bolt area, turning the bolt will spread the hub mounting. But you can make do with a prybar and WD40 soak and tap the hub with a plastic deadblow hammer. Of course you work mainly on the floor, so it can be rather tedious. You could mark the original installation position, but more than likely, the section will be clean and easy to align.

To be honest, I wouldn't have a clue. Labour times are fixed by BMW Germany. Parts pricing varies per dealer. I would imagine that the labour will be around 3 hours, maybe less. Being in Australia, our labour times are 224+gst per hour. I don't know the price now, but that was what I was what I was told 4 years ago. Hardly any E39's come back into the shop for repairs.

Google says with tie rods and alignment around $1200 usd, most so called "indy" shops are $600+ for control arms only, either way not worth doing on a $2500 car, it seems like every e39 or e46 that comes through here needs this job done and many other small jobs that would easily total over $15k at the dealer or most any shop, but now you can see why this channel exists , its so people can fix their own car instead of selling it to the scrap yard.

Yes if people are willing to take their time and do the work themselves. Buying cars this old and expecting nothing to happen is as dull as gambling. But some people say its a defect with a particular models, I would disagree. Nothing lasts forever and for the same year. Personally I wouldn't bother, you repair one thing and the rest of the car is over 20 years old. Cheap parts or not, you'd end up burning allot of time and efforts. Simply because the car's are not totally DIY friendly on certain aspects.

is it necessary to remove the tie rod when replacing the thrust arm? I actually loosened the nut on the ball joint for the tie rod by accident. can I just tighten it without any load? like is it a situation like the thrust arm bushing where it breaks if tightened without being under load?

Thanks for the great videos. what brand of suspension parts do you buy off ebay that are any good? I've read mixed reviews on the $120 kits. I appreciate the help.

I recently bought a 2000 540i Sport Wagon and it makes a creaking noise when I brake. This only happens after 10-15 of driving (warm up time). Your description in the video is exactly what I am hearing. My question is how good (quality wise) is the kit you bought off eBay? Is it better to spend more $ for German made parts as opposed to the China made parts? There is a point where I understand that the German parts are priced so high that it is better to buy the cheaper parts. Appreciate your opinion on this.

Sure I understand. Any recommendations on vendors? I tried buying a replacement rear ABS sensor and was sent the wrong one 2 times. 3 time a charm.

@Nathan does the 98 740il have a rack and pinion? I'm about to buy the kit you have in this video for my 740il and I noticed they don't have inner tie rods. Also I wouldn't have to loosen the strut either, correct? Thanks. Love your videos

There are several different pickle forks, you ned the short wider fork, or slide the knuckle down the strut far enough do you can hit the threaded art of the ball joint with a hammer
