My father was an arborist and a landscaper, we had a landscaping company that I grew up in. My mom did the office stuff, ran the books/payroll and placed the client list and work for my dad for the week. We regularly, (in the Winter when my dad was "off") go to the Morton Arboretum here in Chicagoland to do research. He never stopped learning, and I went to work with him from when I was a small child. My job was flower planting, I'd plant edges of begonias, petunias, and the like. My mom taught me how to plant flower pots with good combinations of flowers; design and balance. At any rate, when I saw this, I was like OMG. There needs to be new turf setup. You can save this, but it's a lot of work, better to cut it down and take it out, put new turf down, or place several shrubs, and low ornamental trees. Put in raised beds for veggies/herbs. Maybe some fruit bushes along the fence, and a perennial garden on one or two sides. I'd cut down on the lawn area unless this is a fixer upper for young families that might want grass as a play area and have a swing set/sandbox setup for the children to play in. We lived near a big easement field near a railroad, so my dad always had my uncles and family friends out to play horseshoes. He also laid out another area for volleyball. Then, on our driveway, we had a shuffleboard he spray-painted on the cement. We also had a croquet set for another area in the backyard grass area. Downstairs had a ping pong table. If you could not find something fun to do at our house during a birthday party, etc. it was your own darn fault. But that is what having a good big backyard can do for you. Thanks for keeping it up!
@gw42875 жыл бұрын
We see lawns like that and majority of the time we tell them we can't do it. Its hard on the engine first of all and secondly a lot of folks don't want to pay the price to get it back down. I think a scythe is more appropriate sometimes. You're covering 48 inches or more in a swath - way more than 18 inches on your 36" zero, and you can work closer, slower and safer to see cinderblock, cans and jugs that may be hidden in the tall grass while completing the job possibly faster. You would have been able to collect the cuttings, too. That healthy yard doesn't look like it needs more mulch.

Once mowed for a massive townhouse complex, it was around 350 acres. They hadn't had it mowed in a few weeks before we started so the grass was about a foot tall. Well they didn't tell us that they had fencing around some of the town houses, that were only cut down leaving about 3-5 inch pieces of fencing sticking up out of the dirt, plus they had stumps and everyday people leaving random objects in the yard, chains, kids toys, large pieces of woods, you name it, got the blades wrapped around a piece of men underwear that was conveniently in the grass. Needless to say after a few mows on that property the equipment was destroyed and had to early terminate the contract because it was such a hazard to mow there.

I had to do a huge yard like this last year, I took my time with a slow walk around. Found 2 small ponds, & an extention cord. Very scary when you can't see debris in long grass. Not only a hazard to equipment but also puts operators in danger too. only 1 week after i bought my new mower too. Whould a wheeled string line trimmer for the 1st cut be a better, safer option, when coming into yards like this?

I've done worst yards than this and made peanuts. When you work for someone else you not making anything they do. I want to start my own business but it's hard trying to save up for the right equipment they use while paying bills. If you can donate anything would be a blessing and if not thank you anyway.

first thing I do when presented with a new property to mow is inspect for condition which allows me to determine how much I will charge for the job. and set customer expectations.. then before I start I walk the lawn looking for any hidden items that might damage my cutting capability (single most important consideration) then clear any obstacles . the broken blocks at the rotting gate a warning that there may be other obstacles in the long grass. Oh yes with a property in this condition insist on payment in advance.. and stay away from amateur house flippers who might be tempted to screw you out of payment. .take pictures before and after.. purpose being 1) prove you completed the job... 2) real reason proof that you have not damaged anything during the cutting example in this vid the satellite dish.. thanks for taking the time to make and post this :-)

I do garden work and I only have a small mower and I cut grass which is sometimes just as tall. You just have to open the side chute extra wide by tying a peice of wire to it so the grass won't clog up the mower

That lawn was in rough shape Q did a good bush hog. In time y’all will have it in good shape!

I drop my decks down around 2.5 inches and run the yard like I would mowing with the blades off. It finds all the junk, and if it doesn’t I don’t hit it at a finish height of 3.5 (northern grass) Hope this helps in the future for saving deck parts and the engine!

I currently do this type of work. I work for someone else. I love it. I want to start my own business but it's hard trying to save and paying bills for the right equipment to do this. If you can donate anything would be a blessing and if not thank you anyway.

The first thing I will do is walk through a yard like that and move everything I can find out of the way. It's a solid way to find stuff you can't see because your feet will feel it.

@@jimmyjokes763 I get plenty of jobs, part of it is being upfront and honest about my charges. Also I usually double my normal rate for yards egregiously overgrown mainly due to unseen hazards.

All the grass doesnt have to come off at the same time. Run that thing over 3 times to get it to where you want it. Much easier on equipment

Yes for sure inspect it first n pick up what isn't nailed down. 2. Set your mower deck on high. 3. Throw grass away from what you are cutting...so you are not cutting it again. Come back two days later n bail it. Lol Good job on the fenced in back yard dude!

Owners should have picked up all that crap in the back, I’d charge them extra for having to clean up after them
@largeogres24154 жыл бұрын
That type of yard up here is considered a full face lift yard clean up. And it’s a automatic 350$ to start cleaning it up Bc there’s no telling what we will find. We go in with older equipment to get it started and cleaned up and use the new better equipment when finished and we know it’s safe and done. We also do a full yard walk to make sure there s nothing that may do damage to the house as well.
@MrLalo16754 жыл бұрын
I usually do a sweep around of picking up items that can mess up my mowers and be a hazard as well. Now a days, I dont even bother with dealing with customers that have long grass. Its not worth the hassle or my machine breaking down. My opinion and past experience.

O my goodness this is so so so much work. Both of you worked to get it done My husband used a push mower to cut my mother 2lots for a whole day , and still had to re-cut and trim! It takes a whole day to cut it every week!! Nothing but a paying job is worth it. And the mower you have and help, Get paid brother, you did "Justice to this yard ! I hope you also got a bonus for moving their things!🙏
