Unfortunately there is no way to remove the fingerprint. And if it is a High MS, I personally wouldn't do anything to it. If the value is there to get it graded you can see if the grading company will "Conserve" the coin. That is a fancy way of saying safely clean the coin. @@GinaGraydon-sr7rb

Yes. Its not going to get everything off the coin though. But don't scrub it. As scrubbing or rubbing the coin will leave surface abrasions. This will cause a coin to be considered cleaned. The Acetone will loosen some of the surface debris, tape, glue, etc...

It was hard to get a good video of the coin. I just took a good look at the coin and some of it may have some heat damage. There have been several of these that I came across at my LCS with similar gunk on the surface. This was the nicest one that I figured would make for a good video here. Not sure some extremely hot coffee would damage the surface like this. But that is my best guess for what was on these coins.

I have a bunch of 1979 Susan dollar coins and 1973 half dollar coins. Can you tell me what’s the best way to figure out the value of these?
@originalatogscoins2 ай бұрын
For the 1979 Susan B look up what is called a "Wide Rim" You should be able to tell the difference if you have one. Those hold about a $10+ value depending on condition. Otherwise Those coin dates are fairly common and are most likely only going to be worth face value unless they are in *PRISTINE* condition. There are some DDO varieties on the 1973 halves that you would need a magnifying device to see. They can be compared to picture on VarieyVIsta.com if you so choose to. The DDO's can hold a little value as well but coin shops do not pay up for most varieties.

@davycrockett439528 күн бұрын
It depends. The way he did it if he sent that off to PCGS or NGC it should get a straight grade. The cat is out the bag now. It's exactly what they do when you pay for restoration services. They just don't want you to do it they want you to pay them to do it. I know I've sent coins off after cleaning with Acetone. Soak no longer than 3 mins rinse with distilled water no longer than 30 secs. Pat dry 100% cotton towel do not rub. Good luck!

Most of the time you don't want to. I would only try to safely clean a coin if its value wouldn't fall if I damaged it. I got this coin for silver melt. If I damaged it it would still be worth silver melt. No harm no foul on this coin.
@Makemyluck Жыл бұрын
Why not clean them though? If you do it safely ??
@FemmeFren Жыл бұрын
@Makemyluck Because no matter how "gently" you clean a coin, it is still going to be abrasive. Even chemicals specifically meant for this task will leave extremely small abrasions that can be seen under a microscope. This is why you don't want to clean them if you plan on reselling them, but if they're for personal collection or pure material worth, it does not matter.

@originalatogscoinsАй бұрын
Are you talking about a state quarter from 2004? The state quarters have the date the state joined the union on them and Wisconsin joined in 1848. I don't know of any other Wisconsin coins and the state quarters are mostly just worth face value. The only exception would be almost perfect Graded coins. Or the Extra leaf varieties. You can google search to see if your coin matches the extra leaf varieties from the pictures.

Soo if you have a coin tray in the car and coffee or juice spills in it and it dries how do you Clean it or why not clean it???
@originalatogscoins Жыл бұрын
If the coins could hold any additional over the face value, cleaning coins can and will destroy that value. If you want to try to preserve the added value, Acetone would be the safest way to get off sticky substances. You can also soak in distilled water. This way you don’t scrub the surfaces and can loosen up debris. If you just want to wash them if for daily use some you can. Coins cleaned, wiped, scrubbed, or polished are considered damaged for collecting purposes. Sorry if this is overly explaining things. I just wanted to make sure I was thorough.

Cleaning a coin can and does lower the value. This coin would be considered damage and is only worth silver melt value. No matter what it will be worth silver melt. @@originalatogscoinsThanks for answering. I'm a total noob who started coin collecting last week, so every bit of info I get is really helpful. Is it ok to clean off the sticky gunk or thick dirt, as long as you don't remove the patina?
@originalatogscoins Жыл бұрын
@@eldoradocaddy1236 Welcome to the hobby! Coin collecting is a really fun and great thing to get into. The biggest thing I would suggest to new collectors is knowledge is the best tool in the hobby. Then don't rush or feel like you are going to miss out on something and have to buy things right now. I do hope you continue to learn and love the hobby!! To your question it is generally frowned upon to clean coins. I learned from several old school collectors that Acetone is one of the safest ways to remove some debris from coins. There is no miracle way to remove everything and restore a coin to new. Clean can damage the coin surfaces and that is irreversible damage. Acetone and Distilled water are things that can loosen dirt and debris. But can't get everything. I only gently clean a coin (As in the videos) when if value will not fall should I accidently damage the surface. That is less than 1% of the time usually. Acetone is great for sticky gunk such as tape and adhesives. You just have to be aware that if you accidently scratch or damage the surface, the coin will always be considered cleaned. I hope this helps explain things a little more. 😃
