I've recently become curious about the Schmincke Horadam line of professional grade watercolour paints, and thought the best way to learn more would be to play with one of their dot charts.
Here I swatch out the first quarter of the chart.
The first few minutes of my second video in this series explains how and why the swatching is like it is. I'd be grateful if you'd watch it before commenting on the swatching method!

I was never a yellow fan until daffodils, as you can tell. 😊 I find myself using more brights lately to balance out my faves of sepia, paynes grey, and buff titanium. I'll never paint my house red, but a red tulip or two is just dandy. 😅

I have to say that each of these colours is beautiful in its own way.😍 Chrom orange, perm. red and Saturn red are probably my favourite ones among these swatches. But my really really favourite ones are yet to come!😊😂 I guess you've already relised by now that you do have lightfastness information on your dot chart - count all those little stars by each color.🙃 Sending you a big hug 💞

Haha, yes, mine too! Yes - it was just the pigment info not on the dot card. I hadn't put lightfast info along with the names, because I like to have pigment info next, then opacity, then lightfast at the end!

All my watercolour paints are from Schminke, I'm not quite sure why that happened but I have no complaints over their quality! I am hoping to branch out and try other brands too when my stash of paints is a bit smaller 😂

Thanks - why what happened though? That some aren't super pigmented? It could just be getting the paint from a dot card. I'm still finding it a very useful colour guide though, and have no quality complaints, including from the tubes I own.

I find it rather disappointing that they didn’t include pigment details on the dot chart. Isn’t that one of the more important places to list pigment information to assist in comparisons? I think most of my Schmincke paints are super-granulating. However, I did buy a set of 10 15-ml tubes from Jackson’s and I think that set probably included a couple of these yellows and reds. I use them interchangeably with my Daniel Smith mixing colours and don’t really pay much attention to which brand I’m using.
@helencryer
@helencryer 11 ай бұрын
Yes, but Daniel Smith don't either (though Daniel Smith definitely give a more generous sized paint dot!) To be honest, I really don't need more paint, so I'm hoping I don't get too tempted by too many!

I have some Schminckes, but I could never remember the names. I usually go by pigment number, rather than name. The pigments that I remember are PY175, PY110, PY150, PV19, PR207, PV16, PV62, PB28, PB29, PB16, PG50, PG36, PG26, PG19, PG18, PG36, PBr33, PBr11 among others. I still want to get more paints, but they are very expensive.

@@helencryer Hmmm… The Perylene Green is nice and deep, very useful for landscapes. I love their Ultramarine Finest too. Cobalt Turquoise is my favourite, I just love that colour and I try incorporate it even in areas that don’t need it. I did not like their Cerulean PB36, but I do like their Cobalt Azure PB35, despite it being very weakly tinting. Hope this helps someone out there 😃.

I have the PY151 and I think its gorgeous. Also the PY154. But I feel like the swatches are not doing them justice. Seems to me that the tubes are so much more pigmented than the swatch card. Unless its my screen that makes them look so different.

Oh that's good to know, thanks. How do your paints re-wet once they're dried? I didn't feel like lots of the dots so far re-wet very well, except for a few of the reds. (And also compared with the Daniel Smith dot card.)
@martinanelsonartandpsychol6478
@martinanelsonartandpsychol6478 11 ай бұрын
I find they rewet rather easily, a depending a bit on the single colors. They rewet similarly to my Qor colors. Some Cobalt colors are harder, but that is mostly due to the pigment. I don’t have many DS tubes. I cannot even say why, but I always end up not using/liking them, whenever I buy them. Most of my colors are Qor, Schmincke and M.Graham.

Why did you put that huge amount of water on these colours? Schmincke watercolors don’t look like that, they are vibrant and saturated.
@helencryer
@helencryer 11 ай бұрын
Hi, I was having a lot of trouble re-wetting the paint dots, so used too much water, then couldn't get rid of the excess without getting rid of the small amount of pigment I'd released. There isn't enough paint on the cards to get more pigment. I've managed to to a better job with my second swatching session today, but still couldn't manage to get saturated swatches with all of them! My apologies for misrepresenting the paints!
@christinemuller3526

You put too much water there! Schmincke colours are vibrant and saturated, and you make them look as if they were pale and cheap. You’re making these wonderful colours look awful 😣
@helencryer
@helencryer 11 ай бұрын
I put a thin wash of water on the paper to see their flow, but I think the bigger problem is that they're very hard to re-wet - it's taking a lot of water to get any pigment at all off the dot card, and then when I finally get some off, I can't get rid of the excess water, because then I'd be getting rid of the pigment that's finally been released. The exercise is making me realise that the Schmincke dot card is not the way to go to learn about these paints. With my second Swatching that I've done today (yet to upload), I've managed to use less water, but it's still been very hard, and there simply isn't enough paint in the dots to get a good enough wash, for the less heavily pigmented paints.

@@helencryer, you have to wake up the paint with one drop of water. And wait at least 5 minutes. I have Schmincke paints - they are beautiful and vibrant. Quin gold here is so pale. My from Schmincke is so vibrant and saturated. And try to swatch on 100% cotton paper. Colors will be more vibrant.
