For the peice of that kit i always think its worth having a go at doing it yourself, in most cases your car's already written off with head gasket being gone so you're not exactly going to make it worse

I know this is 3 years late but i'm sure people are still watching this super helpful video! Just a tip, you could probably jack the engine up a little bit to get enoughclearance to take out the mount after removing the 3 bolts.

Watching the problems you had helps to avoid traps. I will add a few things I found myself. I found that the timing chain could come off once the tensioners were removed without removing the cam sprockets. I did not want to remove the one that had the cam angle sensor. Also I looked for markings on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets and counted the number of chain links between each rather than trying to get top dead centre. Also workshop manuals tell you to do things that are not correct. The manual said the engine had to be lowered out. I lifted mine out upwards. I lifted it upwards till the sump could clear the frame. Then I put a bar across under the gearbox to support the gearbox at that position. This support bar was tied to the car frame. Then I disconnected the gearbox and left the box in the car. The engine came out with room to spare even with the inlet and exhaust manifolds attached. When I put the engine back in I got 2 bolts and cut the heads off and put a screwdriver slot in the end and screwed them into the engine so they would line up with the gearbox. The bolts were about 2 inches long plus a bit of thread. Also I filed a v shape on the clutch plate hub leading edge to guide the gearbox shaft in.

The car was running rough and after checking a few things, we noticed the plugs were oiled up and we then checked the oil cap and found the tell tale sign of mayonnaise in the filler cap. We then noticed the water level and topped it up only to find it lost coolant again so adding all these things up pointed to the head gasket.

I think that's what caused the head gasket failure on this one too. Poor maintenance throughout it's life.

Great video Martin,those head gaskets don't look very good quality.Was the car overheating before you stripped it Martin? or been run hot ? might be an idea just have the head checked to sure it's not warped.Look forward to the next video on the Corsa ! Cheers, Jeff.

No jeff, no overheating, we caught it before it overheated. Gasket was very corroded. I will check the head though.

Hi great videos. I followed your video part 1 and 2 and did the same to my corsa d. Car now very quiet and going well. The only problem I have is I still here water swooshing around the heater box. I have tried to bleed but still can’t get it sorted. Is there any advice you could give me to sort the problem. Thanks Graeme.

retrorestore. the cooling system still has air in it. I can hear the air inside the car which seems to be coming from the pipes that supply the heater. It happens when I rave the engine. Just wondering if you have any method of removing the air from the cooling system. Thanks Graeme.

That strip down all went fairly well,no seized bolt etc.. Jimmy owes you big time now Martin. You will have blame Jimmy's driving style for the blown head gasket.
@retrorestore

I think it is down to poor maintenance throughout it's life Nick. No coolant solution corrodes these engines and poor oil changes. Jimmy doesn't thrash about so I know it's not his driving style.
@nick2203

Yes lack of proper maintenance is the problem. My daughter had a Corsa as her first car. The timing chain rattled on that,plus a couple of minor issues and all due to lack of maintenance. Like Jimmy she didn't thrash it around but it ended up an insurance write off..It was a fairly minor collision and not her fault, although the other "experienced mature driver" did try and blame her. Fortunately she was able to prove he was at fault.

The best way to check the head for warping is with a steel ruler or a similar sort of straight edge. Don't forget to change the oil filter after you've changed the engine oil. I've just finished the service video on the Corsa C that I've been working on.
