We strapped a GoPro to the fabulous Dr. F for today's exams, and it was a blast! Lots of great news for many of our complicated feral kitties!
She saw Harriet (came in blind, now can see!), Mirok (ruptured ear drum + nerve damage, now healed!), Ilya (missing vertebra + paralysis), Thor (missing both eyes) and Nyla (missing one eye + Thor's seeing eye cat) today.
The video is broken up into two parts.
HUGE thanks to Dr. F from Mountain View Veterinary Hospital for coming out and being willing to show exams LIVE - mountainviewveterinary.ca
If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, here's a summary:
Harriet: Came in 52 days ago, blind in both eyes due to severe keratitis and corneal ulcers. We've unexpectedly been able to significantly clear up her keratitis in addition to her ulcers, and as a result, she is able to see! She is doing really well, LOVES being petted, and is ready for a home. We will continue eye meds for now. She may or may not need additional treatment in the future, so she needs a family who will be diligent about her vet care. Fortunately, she is very easy to medicate.
Mirok: Came in 84 days ago with a severe head tilt due to nerve damage, otitis media (middle ear inflammation) and a ruptured ear drum. As of today, his ear drum has fully healed! He still has a slight head tilt from damaged nerves, but this may continue to improve over time. It no longer affects him, and he is the most playful, sweet, gentle and loving cat ever! He's about 18 months old, and should live a happy healthy life! He is great with other cats, and would thrive in a quieter home where he gets LOTS of love, playtime and snuggles.
Ilya: Came in with his brother, mom and dad from a new property. As often happens with feral cats, we believe their dad has the same mom as they do, which can result in congenital defects. Mom and dad have now been spayed, neutered and returned. Ilya is missing a vertebra and has valgus deformities and paralysis in his back legs. He will be seeing a neurologist and a physical therapy specialist so we can try to improve his mobility. We are thrilled that he is able to control his bladder and bowels like any other cat. In the meantime, we are treating inflammation and parasites, and doing massage + physical therapy several times a day. He and his brother Ivan are 11 weeks old. Ilya is not quite ready for a home yet, as we will need to get a better understanding of his long term medical/accessibility needs in order to find him the purrfect home.
Thor: Came in 34 days ago after he showed up at our Happy Forest feeding station missing both eyes. That he managed to survive for a year without eyes is a testament to his intelligence and remarkable will to live. He will be going for a neuter and for a thorough exam of both eye sockets under anesthesia. There is a remote possibility he may have some degree of eyeball underneath all of the inflammation, but we won't know until he's in surgery. Dr. Ferguson will be doing this LIVE on February 24th 2020, so stay tuned for details! We are hoping to adopt Thor as a pair, with his seeing eye cat Nyla. Thor has an insta-purr and LOVES being petted. He should live a long, happy, healthy life in a clutter-free home. ;)
Nyla: Came in 34 days ago from the Happy Forest with a ruptured eyeball. She has recovered extremely well from enucleation surgery to remove the remnants of her ruptured eyeball and close up the socket. She is starting to feel less afraid around humans, and when the humans aren't around, she and Thor have wild pounce-a-thons followed by snugglefests. They love each other, and we would love for them to be adopted together if we can find the right family. Because Nyla is still quite shy about humans, she will need a family that will interact with her and continue to build her confidence. She loves being petted, playing and has started purring, flopping and giving elevator butt, so we're confident she will be a lovely addition to a human family.
