PART 14 - Flywheel & Main Seal - How to Build a CB Performance 2017cc Builder’s Choice VW Engine

Here I'm fitting the main crank seal and torquing down the dual weight chromoly flywheel with a chromoly 38mm racing nut. All very standard stuff until you realise your torque tool is for a 36mm flywheel nut.

I used a dial gauge indicator. Once on a test fit and then again after I’d buttoned down the short block.

I looked up a multiplier for VW’s and I wonder, are you using the correct starter voltage gear? The ones I saw came with a 6v and a 12v gear. Could that be the slippage issue? She’s stating to come together now! Oil cooler, gen stand then tins etc. You’re in the home stretch now!

That’s exactly right. The tool comes with two gears. One for 6V and one for 12V flywheels. You swap them in and out of the tool for the application you require. You also get an arced plate with corresponding teeth that you can use to tighten and undo rear brake drum castle nuts. Which is very handy when it works. I was definitely using the correct gear from both tools - one worked, the other didn’t. I guess I was unlucky and had a badly made tool. Yep home stretch. I hope to post more regularly.
