Part 2! 10 Power Units! UP Heavyweight Mega Monster Iron Ore Train. Mid & Trail DPU’s! At Keenbrook! We caught this magnificent train earlier in the day at the Mormon Rocks. We saw it once again tied down stopped at Keenbrook. Then a short time later we caught the train in motion at lower Keenbrook. On main line one of the BNSF tracks. Trains can diverge just past our position from the BNSF tracks to the Union Pacific’s Palmdale Cutoff track behind me. And that’s what this train was doing. The reason it was tied down earlier was to let a northbound UP pass by first. I have put links to all three videos below. Please check them out too.

Westbound UP coal train was 150 cars. Keith, it will be interesting to see in the coming days and for the rest of this month (and summer) how many foreign power locomotives begin appearing on BNSF and UP trains because of the extreme heat. I talked to two BNSF engineers in the summer of 2022 and they told me the locomotives don't like extreme heat (just like humans). They said the westbound climb from Needles CA to Arrowhead Junction at the SR 95 highway grade crossing is about 15 miles. They said when the temperatures are above 115 (and this week Needles hit 124), the locomotives begin to break down and the engineers have to call the dispatcher for help. The dispatcher sends extra locomotives that are parked in Needles to the stalled train, they hook up to the rear of the train, and start shoving the train all the way to Barstow. The locomotives may stay with the train all the way to San Bernardino or Los Angeles, or they are disconnected and attached to an eastbound and deadhead back to Needles. The engineers told me several locomotives are parked on side tracks in Needles specifically for the summer months because BNSF knows there will be equipment failures on west and eastbound trains. It is uphill in both directions from Needles. They told me the diesel engines and traction motors simply cannot dissipate the heat quickly enough in that brutal heat, even with those giant radiators on the rear of the locomotives, and all of the fans blowing on the traction motors.

Excellent. 😊 that was a very cool train. S7's finger had to be tired from flick'n that monster! Looked like darn near every car had something on it. 🤩 Glad your battery made it to the end. 😊 Superior action right there.
